Throughout my younger years my family traveled a lot which resulted in me seeing most of the lower 48 states and a trip to Alaska as well all done by motorhome. I got to see a lot of beautiful places first hand and love the outdoors. I always wanted to serve but due to some poor decisions I was led to believe it wasn't an option. Got married and had children. Later found out I could enlist so gave it some long hard thought. At 29 years old I have seen and experienced more than some do in an entire lifetime. Seen the sites, loved and been loved, witnessed the amazing moments of fatherhood. All the while, reading about 18-19yr old kids on deployment that wouldn't be coming home, wouldn't experience even a fraction of what I had in life. So I decided to go for it. I figure if my life experience and being in the right at the right time can save a soldiers life or at least get them through a tough spot than I owe it to them to serve with them. Besides, at this age I need to keep challenging myself right? ;-) SPC Private RallyPoint Member Tue, 05 Nov 2013 21:05:12 -0500 2013-11-05T21:05:12-05:00 Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 6 at 2013 11:04 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-motivated-you-to-sign-up-for-or-stay-in-the-military?n=3889&urlhash=3889

I came from a single parent home where my mother worked anywhere between 2-3 jobs just to support her three children. My grades weren't always as high as they should have been but I went to college. After my first year of college, I left with a 3.2 GPA but could not afford to continue school due to tuition increases. So, I worked for a two years while living at home and decided to join the military and receive all the good benefits and incentives one is privy to upon a contract signing. I have since been in for eight years (will be nine in February) and I reenlisted for the second time in July 2013. My reasons for my two reenlistments were very reasonable in my book.

My first reenlistment, I was stationed at Fort Hood, TX and on my second tour to Iraq. Within three years time, I had managed to get two deployments and 27 months time in country. I decided it was enough and wanted to just get out. However, I had friends who told me about Air Force bases members within my MOS could potentially get. I opted to reenlist for MacDill AFB in Tampa FL and pursue my Bachelors Degree. While here, I had every intention of getting out again but circumstances did not permit my plan to come into fruition. So I reenlisted again upon learning that I was selected for promotion to SFC and I would get a nice assignment going to RAF Molesworth, England. Now, I will continue my education and earn my Bachelors and subsequently seek two additional Masters degrees.
SFC Private RallyPoint Member Wed, 06 Nov 2013 11:04:53 -0500 2013-11-06T11:04:53-05:00 Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 9 at 2013 6:48 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-motivated-you-to-sign-up-for-or-stay-in-the-military?n=4926&urlhash=4926

I was given my American Citizenship once i had been active a year. However, after some time, I have really grown to love to have the opportunity to serve in the military for many reasons. First and foremost, I really enjoy helping others. I have always been involved in community service projects. Giving back to the community has always been a true passion of mine. Serving the US, it's people and values, I feel is the ultimate "community service" if you will. Second, I enjoy being part of a team that is very diverse but works for the same goal (defending the countries people, values, and rights). And finally, I believe the military provides opportunities that can help you develop as an individual. If I'm able to recognize right from wrong, not only does it help me choose right from wrong, but it can also help me spread the knowledge and develop others as individuals.

At the end of the day, I feel privileged and proud to be in this position and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I was concerned about what the other services were like, but still having that desire to follow in the footsteps of heroes before us, I knew I still wanted to "try it out".

While I was in the Guard though, I volunteered to go to Bosnia and that mission got scrubbed; so I volunteered to be thrown together with a bunch of armor guys from all over Michigan to form the historical X Co. 1/126 AR with a mission for homeland security. Upon mission completion, I returned to my regular unit and had to reclass to become an operator (88M), rather than the repairer (63J now 91J) that I was. Around that time, I also landed a temporary federal tech job as a mechanic (63S now combined with others to form 91B). I loved my job so much as a tech that even though I didn't have the experience to move up and stay permanent, I knew I had to get more experience. That's why I'm here today.

What's keeping me in, I'd say, is the idea of finishing out strong in the career I've chosen. By the age of 15 I was taken away from my mother because of her life decisions and placed into foster care. Luckily for me I was placed into the home where my foster mom grew up with a retired SCPO because discipline was something I truly needed. In my senior year of high school, with not many options for me to lean on it seemed like the best thing to do so of course growing up in San Diego, California I called the Navy first but no one answered so I called the Army next. Within a week I had a contract to ship to Basic after the summer. It was and will always be the greatest decision I have ever made in my life. My father and I are, to say the least, on bad terms. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree; however, I have gone out of my way to ensure that I don't walk the path he blazed. He was separated from the Army as a SSG, so a personal goal of mine has always been to surpass him, both as a Soldier and a father.

Another reason I reenlisted this go around was the mentorship I received while I waffled over getting out or staying in. This senior NCO is the single-most motivating individual I have ever encountered. He said "Hooah!" to everything, constantly talked about how he had tiger blood, and literally threw himself at every task. He also showed genuine care and concern for my career, which is something I have never experienced. He took me under his wing and showed me the way. That was all I needed.

The third reason is a direct reflection of what I experienced above. I just want to take care of Soldiers. All too often, I see NCOs neglecting their Soldiers on their way to the top. I think back to my treatment as a Soldier and a new NCO, and I cannot justify replicating that treatment. Why is it hard to be a mentor? Why not strive to be an SME on every topic you can get your hands on, and then pass it on? Why wouldn't you want your Soldiers to be as knowledgeable as you, if not more so? These are the things that motivate me to continue my service, and as long as Uncle Sam says I can stay, I'll stay. The first time I signed on the dotted line I was running very low on options and was lacking direction. I got out when they began the massive cutbacks following Desert Storm. I decided I wanted to "be there" to raise my boys. It took me a number of years to realize that the Army really was responsible for making me the man I had become. About the time my youngest (twins) were hitting high school my wife ran into an article in the paper about a woman who had taken her son to the recruiting station and wound up enlisting herself. It ends up the Army had raised the age limit. I decided it was time to pay the Army back for all it had given me. I figured I had a lot of life experience to bring to the table. Not to mention, the other thing I had come to realize in those years was that it was the one thing I had done for a living that I was proud to have done and truly loved doing. After a fifteen year break in service I reenlisted. We took a very sizable pay cut to take this adventure and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My wife calls it my midlife crisis. Didn't really have a tradition in my family of military service other than 2 uncles that served in the 50's and 60's. When I reached high school, a teacher gave us all some advice that many people overlooked. He told us before we settle down in the world to make sure to travel and see the world. I first signed up for the navy as my two uncles served in the Army and had varying degrees of happiness. One uncle was a butcher stationed in Kansas, and the other spent his time as an aide to a General in Germany. What changed my plans was that I received an appointment to the Naval Academy Prep School, but decided I didn't want to continue studying right after 13 years school. So after leaving the Prep school I spent about a year and a half working and going to college, but after finding out that I probably wasn't going to get a promotion for a while decided to join the military and ended up joining the Marine Corps. I grew up thumbing through my grandfather's yearbooks and such from the 100th ID and playing with my dad's field gear from the 'Nam. I always wanted to be a Soldier. I joined the USAR on the split option program in my junior year of high school. Shortly after graduation, I entered active duty service in the intelligence field. It was almost everything I imagined it would be. After four years, I got out and returned to the ARNG (big mistake!). I stayed out for 5 years, remaining in the ARNG, and I realized that I missed active duty. I missed the camaraderie, the respect, the excitement, the travel, and the benefits. I also missed the pay because, for the 5 years I was out, the highest paying job I could find was only $10/hr. I promised myself I would never leave the Army again without a college degree. I wanted to join earlier, but life took me another way first. In high school I was visited by an army recruiter, he gave me the pre-asvab and told me I scored way to high for the Army, he was just being honest. So, the navy and air force came to see me next. I was honest with them and told them I wasn't really ready to settle in, and would probably just get on trouble. My turn to be honest with them. I'm glad I didn't cause I did get in trouble, and would have scarred my military career. So I moved on, moved up the ladder at a great job, but, 11 years later, became bored and tired of the "your next" they kept telling me. So I quit, with no other options on the table. I was in line for a very good paying job when this SSG shows up at my door. He had gotten my address from the reserve website I had visited. At first, I was going reserves. After my 2nd interview, and offer to work at the previous said good job, I chose to go active after thinking about it on the way home from the interview. Talked to the wife, called the recruiter and raised my right hand. Fast forward 3 1/2 years...
I was ready to get out. For reasons I won't go into...I was ready to get out. I've never been in trouble, always right place, right time, 100% all the time, always relied upon . I chose to stay SPC so I could train and lead the new guys...sounds backwards right... then, tragedy struck. A good friend and superior NCO that always believed in me was taken from us this year in AFG. It instantly made me want to give this Army that I Love another chance. I love the Army, everything it stands for. So in his memory I raised my right hand again, and will try to keep my mind open, for him. Had to fight for my AFSC Tactical Aerovac. Embarrassingly my mom went to Dover AFB to meet with Gen Jones. She advocated for me that my scores were exceptional, had achieved Eagle Scout, and had service awards out the wazoo. He got me in saying I had better do well in his name. I came out of BMTS with honor grad and tech school with distinguished honor grad. Became a flight instructor within 5 years and achieved TSgt within 6 years. Had about aced all my exams. Went to a state college while I was an airman during that time. Had flown at night and weekends so I could attend school during the day. Finished out and got my commission instead of accepting MSgt. My first station was Misawa AB, Japan as a squadron adjutant/flight weapons observer and got to fly intermittently the F-16D. It was a 3 year hitch when I got injured. Finished out doing command post, IT for CES, and airfield management. I stayed in for the camaraderie, stability, and esteem. My subordinates were great. They would do anything for me. I wasn't interested in joining at the time, just curious what it was about. During the summer between my junior and senior year, I received a brochure in the mail talking about the Army Reserve. I had been thinking about college and wasn't sure how I was going to pay for it. I knew my parents couldn't afford it, and in fact, my mom had gone back to college at that point. They were offering to pay 1/2 of my tuition, and I was being offered a 1/2 tuition scholarship for speech competition, so I figured, "Hey, this might be the answer to paying for my education." I still needed student loans, a part time job besides drill and Pell Grants. But it helped.
As far as family and friends, I had a cousin who retired as a Captain in the Navy. She told me not to join because she didn't think I could handle it. Two of my classmates who went into the NG, didn't think I would make it through basic training. Yeah of little faith. My parents & siblings always supported me.
There were many times when I considered getting out, but for some reason or another, I stayed in. At an early age stationed at Hill I looked up to the viper pilots on the base. My goal was to fly planes, initially I wanted to be an F-16 driver. Once I got to UPT I realized I did not have the type A fighter jock mentality and would have been crucified in their environment. I went heavies flew KC-135's than ironically went into a bastardized fighter community flying MQ-1 drones. I enjoyed both missions. However career decisions were being made that were not in line with what I wanted to do for the rest of my career so I opted out a few years ago. I am in the reserves as a Liaison Officer doing oversight for the Civil Air Patrol.

The current job I am in is not the most glamorous in the AF but it is fairly rewarding providing mentor-ship and guidance to CAP folk. It does have a unique aspect in the sense that I can volunteer to back fill active duty units. I am currently doing a 90 day MPA at Nellis working for an Intel Squadron. I suppose the big picture mission is what drives me to continue to serve in some capacity. I would like get into a flying unit at some point. I have even toyed with the idea of switching services like the Navy to see what that culture. As much as I like Air Force I do believe we all purple uniforms at the end of the day. I knew it would be tough though. Service in 1975 was definitely NOT cool. What finally convinced me, oddly enough, was an English teacher at my high school.
