What motivates you to leave one company for another?

Lauren Weaver When I left the service, I found a good paying job as an operator at a chemical plant. My goal was to obtain my degree and then work on the Space Program. When I had my degree, I took a big cut in pay to start work on the Space Shuttle program, where I stayed for 33 years, until the program ended. I did not become rich working on the Space Shuttle program, but I had a job that I loved.

Well for three of the Companies I worked for they made the decision I was no longer needed because they could not pay my Salary or because they could no longer effectively sell the software I was supporting. In all three of those cases I thought the underlying issue was management incompetence but kept my mouth shut. In two of the cases I wanted the seperation package because I knew it would be large. In one case where I initiated the seperation it was with the former EDS right after being selected for and going through their Management Internship Program and learning the company's philosophy on granting raises to people. After I heard that chapter in the Management Training course there was no doubt it was time to find another company. Turns out it was a good decision because a few years later the company all but collapsed and shrunk to 1/4 it's former size and then HP bought them.

Respect, and the leader. If the leader is a bad supervisor, I don't care how much money I'm making I'm gone-(I've done it before, and told them why I was leaving)

Push factors? Poor leadership, being under-appreciated, no room for upward mobility, hostile co-workers, stagnant compensation.

Pull factors? Empowerment to implement your vision, appreciation for previous accomplishments, better fit, significant increase in responsibility/pay.

For me, it's simply job satisfaction. Money is important, but if I don't like the people I work for or work around, then I'm going to be miserable at work every day.

I always found it was a set of orders from Dept of the Army that mostly motivated me to change from one company to another.
