And as long as you have at least one ear bud out, or use a speaker device, I don't see why it should be an issue. But as far as organized pt it is more of a saftey hazard if you wear headphones because it limits your situational awearness. But i have seen units play music over a loud speaker during pt. Just have to be mindfil of music with explict or racist content when in diverse groups. Big Army says we are too irresponsible and too much of a hazard to ourselves to use headphones in uniform. Funny thing is when PT'ing on our own in civilian cloths we don't seem to be dying off, makes you wonder. This pertains to use during the APFT. Unit Commander's prescribe the uniform to be worn during unit PT. Most installation Commanding Generals also have a written policy of what is and is not allowed when conducting PT in uniform during non-unit PT time. The use of headphones during unit PT can't be properly regulated to ensure uniformity. And it does detract from the professional appearance.
Now that the public service portion is out of the way...personally, I have no issue with the use of headphones (in PT uniform or civilians) while in the gym. Outside the gym, then I would only allow the use of headphones while in civilian PT clothes, not Army PT uniform. However, some installations get carried away. For instance, there is a unit that restricts even the WEARING of CIVILIAN clothes for PT from 0500-0900! How does that even make sense?! How do you even police this? There are civilians everywhere and contractors and Soldiers from other units. 1SG Private RallyPoint Member Sun, 11 Jan 2015 17:08:12 -0500 2015-01-11T17:08:12-05:00 Response by PV2 Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 12 at 2015 8:09 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-music-is-on-your-workout-playlist-and-why-can-t-the-army-listen-to-music-during-pt?n=413720&urlhash=413720

When I do kickboxing it angry music like Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, NIN. When I run I have sound cloud and a cardio playlist my kickboxing coach gave me. It's a variety electronic dance and pop timed for heart rate progression. It's great for me since I started running again.
