My service was from FEB 1965 to DEC 1968 with deployment to Viet Nam, Thailand, and Okinawa working on the flight line with C-130s and F4s. My civilian career included many years of unemployment with the absence of healthcare. I have required hearing aides since my early forty’s.

1. In SEP 2017 I purchased a 40 year old house requiring much maintenance with frequent trips to LOWES and Home Depot. By happenstance I heard that veterans could get a 10% discount by showing a veteran’s ID. So I went to a VA clinic to request a veteran’s ID. It was then, in late 2017 that I was informed by the Eligibility Officer that I was also eligible to receive VA medical care.

PROBLEM: It took 49 years for me to discover by happenstance that I was eligible for VA healthcare. Why was this benefit withheld from me all these years?

2. Also, by happenstance another veteran mentioned to me that I could get hearing aids from the VA. I was evaluated and issued hearing aids.

PROBLEM: The hearing disability was caused by all those years working on the flight-line without any warnings of potential hearing damage and without any ear protection. Over the following 40 years I spent thousands of dollars on hearing aids because the VA withheld the hearing aid benefit from me all those years.

3. About a year after receiving the hearing aides another veteran suggested I get evaluated for hearing disability. I was evaluated and awarded a 40% disability with a $700/month payment commencing on the date I applied for disability.

PROBLEM: The hearing disability was caused by my Air Force job 47 years previously. I asked for the disability benefit to be applicable to the time my hearing was damaged almost 50 years ago. I was denied.

Another event highlighting the callousness of the VA is when the VA denied to evaluate my hearing in the early 1970s. I went to college in Los Angeles following my discharge in DEC 1968. I noticed having difficulty hearing the lecturers. I went to a VA hospital in Los Angels to ask for a hearing test. When I did, I was bullied out of the building because I had no obvious visible injuries. I am one of them. My experience with the VA is that it is one of the most unprofessional, uncaring, disorganized organizations that I have ever encountered. It is only because I have found a few people and some departments that truly care about their veterans, that I continue to use their services.

For example, in 2019, I was seen by a Long Beach podiatrist who, while cutting my toenails, decided to remove a callus from the bottom of my big toe. While doing so, he created a wound on the bottom of my foot that took more than three years to heal. When I tried to claim service connection because of his error, the VA denied that because they said that there was never an entry in my record that he ever removed a callus.

In April of this year, I had an appointment with the Podiatry wound care clinic at the VA Long Beach because a sore had developed on my right second toe. I have a service dog, and was told by the Department head, who was running the clinic, that he was allergic to dogs and would only treat me if I allowed somebody to handle my dog outside the examination room. I said OK. Before leaving, he told me that I would have to see another doctor the following month, which I agreed to.

When I attended my May appointment, there was a sign on the check-in window that said "No Service Dogs Allowed" in the examining rooms. When I protested and told him that his actions were bulls***, the Department head kicked me out of the clinic. It took two months of complaining before I was allowed to come back in WITH MY SERVICE DOG. In the meantime, I filed a civil rights complaint with the VA more than three months ago, and I have never received an answer. I am now 66 years old, retired, and making $2,064 a month on social security, I will just rely on my Medicare to take care of me which I pay into for Part B and a supplemental in case I need expensive drugs which I don't at this time, I am paying $112.51 a month for a supplemental I don't even use. My house payment is $1,600.00 a month alone, screw the VA, I have heard too many nightmares about them, I guess God has my six. Prosthetics would not even answer their phone or return messages. Without my scooter I not even get the trash to the dumpster let alone go shopping for food. On top of that my anti seizure meds the I had renewed then followed up on 2 weeks before I ran out and was being reassured my meds would be there, well they did not show up and I'm out of my meds. Of course they start looking for excuses to shift the blame to the patient.

The VA lacks the ability and desire to respond to its mobility impaired Veterans. They think people in wheelchairs and using scooters can do everything they can do. They do not have the slightest idea of the callousness their actions appear to their disabled Vets. If you have any service connected disability, you are eligible. Otherwise, if you served during certain years or were posted to certain locations -- this is set by Congress -- you are eliglbe. Ask the VA for current facts concerning years or locations.
Regarding "service connected" you CAN receive a "service connected disability rating of 0%" This doesn't sound like much, but it counts quite a bit. It's important to understand the value of the "service connected" notation -- they're saying the problem you have came from your active duty period.
Finally, no myth at all: actual experience. When I first retired in the late 1990's the VA health care was not worth it (IMHO). They had a mental understanding of "veteran" back then as an unemployed, widowed, WWII vet who needed a ride to and from the VA hospital, and who was content to sit at home all day and wait for home-delivery medications. Their default treatment was to hand out enough narcotics to deaden any pain whatsover. I said this to my primary care VA doc and he more or less agreed. It was tough to get scheduled, tough to maintain employment whill taking so many durgs, and I had to fight to get permission to pick up my Rx at the hospital (instead of home delivery). I'm glad to say those days are past. If your VA health care experiences stem from any time before 2010 and you are eligible, do yourself a favor and take a fresh look. It's still medicine by bureaucracy but the care I've been getting is good and there are some (not all!) truly fantastic dedicated folks working there. This applies to me for both service connected and general health care.
