I went and bought a boot drier after my first tour in Afghanistan. I took that with me to Iraq. By my second tour in Afghanistan we had boot driers issued so that no longer counts. I brought a mini coffee pot. I would strap it down inside the JERRV and make coffee first thing every morning.

Desert Storm and I am with a Heavy Equipment Maintenance company. Our welders made 55 gallon grills. Our sister company which was Quarter Master had steaks. I think you can piece this together.

Oh my gosh. My FIRST duty assignment, I did not go to AIT, MET my unit IN the field...Here I am a young specialist, thinking this is 'campout with the scouts' tent, dirt floor, mat, web gear, M16, MRE's and there ya go, heck we just did that in basic right? WRONG! Big ass tents, plywood flooring with CARPET on em, AIRMATTRESSES ON THE COTS, A COFFEE POT in the tent WITH ELECTRICITY...I'm like, what the hell? My platoon sgt puts his arm around my shoulders, and says, hey, did you think this was basic training II??? Welcome to the med corps! *smh* I re enlisted for another 5 yrs after that one....lol

Seriously, if you go to sea on a submarine that may never see the light of day, with the exception of periscope liberty, for up to three months, luxury items aren't what comes to mind first. Toothpaste and razors and the small things you need become very important when there is no source for replacement.

I was with a team that would take a small propane stove and a big pot, which we used to make MRE gumbo. Dam that was good and the best part we did not need toilet paper for days.

Also a rosarie. I wore one around my neck for my entire tour in Nam. Got out Ok and still say a rosarie every day. MY Catholic faith saw me through that mess. I still have that rosarie but have no idea where my dogtags went. Probably tucked away in a closet somewhere.
