You obviously have at least 4 years of college. You have an Army commitment, during that commitment we ask that our young Officers learn their line duties and be fully prepared to lead their men and women in combat along side the NCO. If you remain beyond that commitment you will have several opportunities to advance your studies. Your Advanced trainjng, CGSC, the Army War College and others all provide ample opportunity to advance your degrees. During your current commitment your duty is to train your men and women, if you raise your skill set to the level of competency required of an Officer then use your spare time to advance your degree. Thank you for your service. Oh, and service for leaders refers to selfless service. It is not about me, but my unit, the Army and the defense of our country. Unless we are in an army paid educational program.

I began graduate school online when I was at the CPT's advanced course. at my units, I had several bosses who told me "now is not the time to be working on graduate school". Keep in mind that I did everything at home and on my own time. I ended up having to take classes deployed too. At the end of the day, I graduated and my Army work never suffered. I had only one boss who said to me, "I understand why you did it and I can see how if you wait for the perfect time, you will never get there."

When the Army instituted the "No Major Left Behind" for ILE / CGSOC, I was picked to do the online version. Yes, exiting... This means I could not pursue a graduate program at Leavenworth.

I was on diplomatic duty at an embassy when started and finished ILE. I figured out that both UMUC and CMU grant 5 classes (18 graduate credits) from ILE towards a masters degree. I chose to do school again on my own time in preparation for retirement.

My points to you: Do what makes sense to you. Go for it. There is never a perfect time.

As my wise platoon sergeant said to me once "The sooner you start, the sooner you will finish" Retired MSG Jaime Rodriguez was an Armor 19 series with 13 rotations at NTC. He finished his Bachelors on his own time. When I attended his graduation, that was my inspiration to go all in for graduate school.

Picture of Jaime and I in 2000 after the Manchu mile in Korea.
