I've just finished (again) Winston Churchill's "The Second World War", and in it he mentions several times the "tail" of a fighting unit, the number of support troops for those doing the actual fighting, whether infantry or armored unit. Can some of you Army/Marines help out an old Air Force puke?

MSgt David Hoffman Commonly know as Tooth To tail

A combined arms battalion, may have 3 Infantry Company's, an Armor company, a Head Quarters company, that will include 4 or 5 platoons that support the battalion over all. . The HQ PLT will be several sections, Staff, S1, S2, S3, S4 and be the largest. There will be a support platoon, likely as large as the first mentioned, transport, ammo, ect.

When you get at the divisional level, you will have a support brigade, but the whole support Bde does not typically in todays fight deploy with each deployed Bde...

SGM Erik Marquez - thank you, Sir. Just browsing through the paper you provided shows me a decline in the percentage of combat vs support troops since WW1. I will read through carefully, as time permits. Again, thank you.

I read somewhere during the Vietnam war it was a seven to one ratio ,for every one guy in the boonies there were seven in support, don't really know if it's a factual number though.
