Any action camera with plenty of back up batteries. You will want to see some of that craziness later on when someone thinks to 'call you out' on something you told them. I would love to have running footage of the chain of explosions at an elementary school site the bad guys were using as an ammo dump. That might help some understand why when we go after military targets like an ammo dump, there are civilian casualties.

A good camera to document your deployment and a good multi-tool always a great thing to have. The areas of deployment have flourished since the first years of the engagements so I believe the needs have changed. If they were the first boots on the ground in an austere environment, I would whole hardly recommend baby wipes and those type of things to help your cleanliness because there was no better feeling than to clean yourself up a little bit when your own smell became unbearable.

A USB stick or memory card with:

1. The Complete Works of Rudyard Kipling , most troops come to his way of thinking soon enough.

2. The Bible, most troops come to it sooner or later as well.

3. A last letter kept up to date for one's family. Address parts to your significant other and each child no matter their age now. Something for those who care for you or you care for. Forget perceived wrongs since they will no longer matter if this letter is ever needed.

4. Something to remind you from time to time that in life all men know fear at some point and that's OK as long as you can do your job. Being afraid and doing your job makes you a soldier. I doubt there was anyone on Omaha Beach who was not afraid yet they ll walked off those landing craft.

The below is from a guy named James Warner Bellah. Some of his short stories were turned into films by John Ford, including Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Rio Grande. He too was a vet and between him, Kipling and the Bible I got thru OK. Most troops do.

Being an engineer, I always had, my Gerber multi-tool, and a buck knife, on the belt...Never left home without it. Always had plenty of socks, and Tshirts. Always had a camera in my pocket. And always took a few books to pass the idle time. As well as a small multiband radio.

If the environment is suitable, a laptop with plenty of games and access to e-books.
If internet is available, an online learning plan to better yourself and make productive use of downtime.
A deck of cards and maybe some poker chips for when you're feeling social.
Some visual training aids for when you are not feeling social.
A last letter, just in case.
A small token from everyone important to you back home. For me, that was a picture of my family all together, another of just my wife, a small square of fabric from my youngest's baby blanket, a bead bracelet my daughter made for me, and my middle son's teddy bear, which he insisted I needed more than he did even if he was afraid of the dark.

If in an austere environment,
A compass.
Signaling mirror/ strobe.
A quality multitool
100ft of 550 cord
A phrasebook in the language of the local inhabitants

Most stuff was listed that I took on every excursion. The only thing I might add to that is a neck pillow, and seasonings for the different forms of meal you may have. When I was in they didn't have all this technology they have today.

After retirement from the AF I worked in the BX. When troops were deployed after 9/11, anything to reduce chafing in the tender areas! Camel back water carriers were also popular. Many troops were looking for a better quality boot but those were not normally on our approved list and any boot not of US manufacture was not approved for wear as by act of Congress.

Depending on where you're deploying, id make sure to stock up on moisture wicking underarmour boxer briefs and toss out any form of cotton underwear.. (Any that retain sweat or water) Foot patrols, clearing buildings, raids, dismounted missions, or any mission in general that requires any amount of maneuver with moisture retaining under-draws is a GUARANTTEED chaffing nightmare! Underarmour saved me and my nether-regions from the chafed groin and maneuvering with the MISERY that is chafed cock and ball

I’ve been retired for a while. Unless deployments changed a great deal, the individual soldier had “limited transport containers” to carry “comfort items” on his or her person or in their duffle bags and rucksacks. Those units with vehicles normally packed additional “comfort items,” e.g. soft drinks, candy, books, etc. in the vehicle. Train cargo sepecialists or “masters,” Air Force loadmasters and Navy personnel were rather “picky” about what went inside a vehicle on an aircraft, train or boats.
Soldiers are innovative, though. I remember a squad leader who had each soldier bring a different paperback in their rucksack and guys traded during deployment. Everyone it seemed carried a deck of cards, some carried dice with them. When “game boys” were in vogue, on guy carried the game and others additional batteries. A PRC-77 battery usually had enough power left to power a small “boom box” which was normally packed on a vehicle. Personally, I carried paperbacks and writing materials. However, that was years ago. I remember one deployment where I packed a sand wedge and a dozen balls in my “authorized” personal container that went into a CONEX or SEALAND container. As I said, that was years ago.

Ensure you arrange for a consistent supply of beef jerky (slim jims were my crack), dip, baby wipes, and you brand of cigarettes. These items will ensure life is at least bearable.

If you desire to make life in the feild luxurious bring a small fold camp chair, extra socks, 550 cord, your wobbie, and a few book, a multi fuel campve, and a multitool.

For extra income two to four extra cartons a cigarettes per mail call that ypu can sell.

I served in the 80's. Things were a lot different then compared to today.
I carried a small Transistor radio.I also had batteries for at least a month in the field.
I also carried a Stanley Stainless Steel thermos. If you were in my track and wanted hot black coffee you got it. Disnt matter who.
Another thing I carried was a Flint and Steel with tinder punks. The whole kit was about the size of your wallet.
Is like to thank my Dad for teaching me how to use that piece of gear.

This depends. Being on my first deployment now, I wish I was informed on the amount of downtime. (I Army for like 3 hours a day, then fuck off the rest) so like definitely bring some form of entertainment... and a lot of it. Do Not get more than is required at RFI/CIF! This will allow you more room for civilian clothes, as well as your ps4/xbox! Definitely bring plenty of tobacco if you use, it is not cheap! Bring enough socks/underwear unless you feel like going through laundry every other day! (If you have to think what enough socks/underwear is, pack more socks/underwear) bring plenty of pens, notebook paper, etc! Thats pretty much it!

Hmmm, I served before cell phones so my frame of reference is outdated. I would say to bring music, a book or two, deck of cards, your own roll of 100mph tape and at least 100 ft of 550 cord. Also a good quality multi tool. Nowadays a cell phone is a must. Can hold music, books, compass, flashlight, GPS, internet, etc., all on one device.

WOW things have changed! Most things were furnished for any deployment automation has ramped things up now so a lot of what we would purchase to take has been replaced buy a cell phone. Personal Hygiene items were automatic as were extra socks and underwear. Zip lock bags and just plastic bags before the zip locks were a must to keep things water proof and dust free. I had a leatherman when they first came out and always carried a p-38 still use both daily. Carried a fixed knife on my web gear and always carried 1 pair of socks 1 underwear and a T-shirt in a water proof bag of some kind (makes a great pillow). Always had a boy scout stick match container or Pill bottle with water proof matches put usually two sheets of news paper (PRE DRIED) in my underwear bag so I had quick fire starter. Small bottle of Mineral oil it has no smell, and a little goes a long way. A carton of Smokes in my back pack and always bought a refill when possible. Non sent Talc powder to help keep those spots dry. Bailing Twine black ( we could not find para cord like you can now), a watch, and one small radio with extra batteries and a ear plug. Flash lights were issued but when they came out with the smaller ones most everyone bought one it also went on you belt or web gear. A compass was always nice just in case so get the it works boy scout one inexpensive but usable. Dominos, and decks of cards Which could be gotten as a training aid, and a paper back book. A Sewing kit, I could almost a book of things but you get the Idea. We also packed three plastic tumble style cup. For coffee and many other uses. I think that the battle-belt is a game-changer that wasn't available to me in Iraq. Being able to transfer weight from your IBA onto your hips helps a lot, especially if you add a set of high-speed-low-drag suspenders that can be worn under your IBA. With a battle-belt you can carry essentials like ammo, water, an IFAC, and a a drop-down thigh holster for your M9 for when wearing of full battle-rattle isn't required on your FOB. It is similar to the old LBE but is much more comfortable, less bulky, and can be worn in conjunction with your IBA to layer-up depending on your needs.

For us Squids we made sure to bring a comfortable pad to put on top of the 3 inch pad that was supposedly our mattress and anything else we can make like comfortable like flush baby wipes hate using sand paper to wipe. Laptop plenty of training films and movies, books we usually checked out from the ships library or someone would bring bunch on board during the on load and go from there. Anything from home that makes like easier when underway and in between port calls.

A GOOD quality knife. I carried a Randal Combat Survival knife for over 6 yrs in the service on deployment, in the field, just about everywhere except Japan and Okinawa. Carried it on numerous camping, hunting and fishing trips after I got out. Still have it, and the teeth on he spine are still sharp enough to slice deep at a light touch. No tool, gizmo, gadget, or piece of gear is as useful.

Lot of interesting items. Times have changed. During my time it was a heavy duty plastic sealable bag for writing implements and paper, good quality knife, extra socks and gloves. We didn’t expect to much “down time” so only carry what you need because shanks mare can be tiring.

My wife went to Desert Shield / Desert Storm with her medical unit out of California. I was the First Lieutenant on an LST training Marines off San Diego. We communicated a lot by phone messages. The first one I got from the UAE was a plea for about two footlockers of 'sanitary supplies'. Seems most of the women were in dire straits and the Army was clueless. I copied down the list and headed for the grocery store, even though I'd never heard of most of the gear. I parked my cart in the hygiene aisle and was staring hopelessly around when a woman came up wondering if I was some kind of perv. As I told her the story, two other women had stopped to listen. When I was done, the woman grabbed the list out of my hand and the three of them started throwing mysterious packages into my cart. When they were done, I mumbled my thanks and headed for the checkout. I did remember to ask for a couple of large empty boxes. At home I packed, wrapped, taped and addressed. Cut to the chase....the goods got to the ladies in short order and several asked my wife if I had any unmarried brothers...or eve cousins.

The one thing I wish I had known before hand and had taken with me would've been the huge ziplock bags to keep my clothing in. Always seemed to be coated in the fine sand dust of the desert

Really depends on how established the theater of ops is. 2005 we still didnt really have internet, so it was all portable dvd players and books.
2010 we had unlimited internet in our room for $75 a month so a decent computer was more than enough. 2019 was a computer and all books for grad school. So theres a lot that goes into it

A case of TANG, orange, strawberry or grape. The taste of bland water overseas will be a damned sight better with some flavor and sugar.
