1981, Co. 177, RTC/NTC San Diego, next door to MCRD. I was 18. GMG1 Wend from The Bronx was my company commander. That's where i learned how versatile the f-word could be.

NTC closed in 1993, now known as Liberty Station. Has shopping, restaurants, education , hotels, military and civilian housing areas, and a golf course. SD did a great job with it.

Went through Ft Leonard Wood in the summer of 2013, was 26 at the time. I was surrounded by nothing but soldiers who were there on the slit training option. It was definitely tougher dealing with those rambunctious young ones who thought they knew more than everyone else.

I went to BCT,AIT and all future training at Ft.Lewis Washington 1965 at the old age of 19 ,it was the build up of the 4th Division ,originally slated for Germany and then that pesky war in Southeast Asia came up,so we turned in our cold weather gear,got on that slow boat to China(USNV Gordon) and then things got real interesting as they say!

I took my Basic training at Fort Jackson, Sc. In 1969. I was 21 years old at the time. We called our barracks area Tank hill because their was a water tank at the top of the hill. You could see it almost anywhere on post.Most of us had another name for it, we called it Drag ass hill because when we went out on a march or to the ranges all day, your ass was dragging by the time you made it back to the hill.

RTC Great Lakes at 17 in 1997. We had a really small graduating class, 4 divisions and it was a pretty rough winter. We were the only female division and within a month, a good 1/3 of our division was gone. We had a few girls running from long jail time and a couple others that were pregnant. Then we had a group of runners halfway through who were caught at a station. Other than that, only one girl was sent back a week. It was a pretty interesting experience.

After hearing my Dad voice regrets for not staying in the Navy a few times, I became curious about it. Dad was in during WWII and again for Korea. I remember his stories about his experiences. So, four days after high school graduation, I was standing in my briefs at the Albany (New York) Recruit Processing Station for physical exam. They shipped several of us to the Recruit Training Center at Great Lakes that evening in June of 1961. It did make for a rewarding career after all. Thanks, Dad.

I took ITR at Camp Geiger, thats part of Camp Lejune I was 18 yrs old. I remember when we had classes outside, this kid had a habit of falling asleep when we were sitting in the bleachers. The instructor woke him up made him hold a tear Gas Grenade and pulled the pin. He said fall asleep now numb nuts. The marines on both sides of him made sure he stayed awake. Semper Fi.

Ft Ord, California (now closed) in 1966. I turned 19 while in basic training. Not one friggin' candle! lol 4-A-1-1 We wore the quarantine meningitis tags on our uniform. They did let us go home for Xmas but back to finish up. Good thing... I apparently broke my foot on a night march--- saw an AF doctor who didn't bother to xray and found out earlier this year that I had broken it at some point. That respite allowed me to finish basic without a cast or recycle. Afterwords, flew to Boston via DC Dulles for about 9 months of training at Ft. Devens. ASA.

This is a really old, dead post, but, why not?! Fort Jackson, SC. I was 17 when I arrived, turned 18 3 days later. My parents had to sign for me to go. I'd had a year of college, and just wasn't happy with it, so, off I went.
