Alejandro Villanueva Martín (born September 22, 1988) is an American former professional football player who was an offensive tackle for seven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Army Black Knights and fulfilled his service commitment after graduation, where he reached the rank of captain. Villanueva also served in the Army Rangers, earning a Bronze Star. After serving three tours of duty in Afghanistan, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014, but was waived prior to the season. He then signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and played for them for six seasons until signing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021 for his final season.

I would have to say that none of them ever inspired me. However, the one I had the utmost respect for was Pat Tillman. He walked away from a multi-million dollar contract to serve our country. RIP Pat.

He never made it to the pros - and that's one of the reasons he inspires me. A kid named Dugan Fife. He played basketball for the University of Michigan Wolverines. He had virtually no chance of making it to the NBA. Ever. He was a 6-0 white guy who was only moderately skilled. Good ball player, not great. But that kid HUSTLED. No one on the court outworked him, outhustled him. His senior year, Michigan made him team Captain, despite still being a bench player, only starting 14 of 32 games.

Fife knew that no matter how good he got, he wasn't going to the NBA. But that didn't stop him from busting his butt. That didn't stop him from giving everything he had to his team.

I am never making it to the big. Not as an athlete, a Soldier, or anything else. I am perfectly OK with that. But just because I am never making it to the bigs, doesn't mean I can't put forth maximum effort. Just like Fife.

For the professionals, they don't. If they are good citizens who use some of their wealth and fame to good and charitable things for the community, that impresses me, but it doesn't inspire me. Unfortunately, the one's in the limelight for what they do of the field are usually the bad actors.

The last athletes who inspired me were a half a dozen kids from a neighboring community. They were a small rural school (about 30 kids in each year group). They ran cross country. They had no coach, only a parental advisor. There was minimal school administrative or logistical support (they were a club sport). The mom who usually drove them to races was admitted to the hospital on the day of the meet for an emergency appendectomy.

They kids ran 9 miles to get to the race on time. They were late. They ran the race anyway. They never asked for a ride home. One of the coaches from another team saw them start to walk home after the event and decided to give them a ride.

Elaine Zayak overcame personal tragedy when, as a very young child, her foot was run over severing the bone lengthwise as a result of a lawn mower accident. Elaine became a World Champion & Olympian figure skater. She is inspirational and an elite athlete and is still active in her coaching career.

This won’t be a popular one in the military or law enforcement communities, but LeBron James.

Being born to a 16-year old single mother, never knowing his father, bouncing around to different friends’ families’ houses, to becoming one of the greatest athletes in history, being worth over $1 billion, and bringing along with him all of his close friends. All while keeping his nose clean and never being involved in any scandals.

Sean O'Malley inspires me the most. He recently was quoted as saying,
"...You're gonna be tired. It's about being able to fight tired."
and that's a philosophy that I think applies to the majority of situations life throws at you.
That's also the kind of mentality that got me through my time in service. Embrace the suck!

There are so many athletes that have served and then on to have successful professional careers. But Pat Tillman, to me was hands down the most inspirational. Tillman, left a successful, multi million dollar career to enlist in the United States Army after the 9/11 attacks. He then became an Army Ranger, motivating others around him like a captain in the huddle. Tragically, he lost his life in Afghanistan in 2004. I was deployed in Iraq in 2004, but news echoed throughout. Pats, decision to put his football career on hold and serve his country instantly made him an enduring symbol of sacrifice, courage, and selflessness. You’d be a fool not to get behind him and absorb that kind of dedicated servant soul. His story, His memory, His driven sense of purpose, continues to inspire people to this day and my hope is that it will continue for generations to come.

Simone Biles. This is a woman who, as a child was in forster homes before being adopted by family, found an outlet she was extremely gifted at, opened up about her mental disorder and medication she takes, was sexually abused by someone who was to be respected, AND had 3 moves named after her in gymnastics. Now, if that is not overcoming and persevering, I don't know what is.

Josh Bridges, he proved that regardless of one's size or background, obstacles you can achieve your goals. Josh competed in the Cross Fit Games while on active duty and then continued after leaving the Navy SEALs. He's an inspiration to us all.

The athletes I have the most respect for are the prior, current or future military athletes in all sports. These individuals not only provided us with sports competition, dedication to a team mentality but a commitment to the community and nation. Thanks for all their commitment to service, discipline for completion of education, athletic participation and to our country. I will have to say that Andy Ruiz the ex-heavy weight boxer is a truly inspiration to me and a lot of the Mexican American population and to all the people all around the world that were told you CAN'T do it. Ruiz came from a Mexican family that immigrated here for a better life and they came and established their roots here firmly. Andy was picked as a default fighter for the heavyweight belt since the one chosen could not pass a serious of drug test. He was the underdog (15-1) and was basically chosen as a crash dummy. The champion was a massy specimen of a human as opposed to Ruiz who was fat and not in shape but, regardless of his physical appearance he took on the challenged and knocked the champion 5 times and made him quit, the commentator said the Mexican Rocky was born that day. I can relate to that when i joined the Army I was told I wasn't going to make and that it was going to be the biggest mistake, I heard that when I retired and started my own business. “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

Alejandro Villanueva is the athlete that inspires me. I followed his college football career at Army when he was a tackle & receiver with impressive size at 6'9" he was willing to play whatever position he was asked to & because of his willingness to give it all for the team he was chosen as a team captain his Senior year. After West Point graduation he became an infantry soldier who like me earned a combat infantry badge & served with distinction as an Army Ranger Captain. After his military career ended he fought hard to get his former Afghan translator to the US & safety. That is the kind of officer I would follow into any battle!

Mike Tyson
- Adversity of being molded in the streets
- Natural Athleticism + the RIGHT coach displayed his ability to learn something foreign and master it through channeled discipline and obedience to orders.
- Iron Mike Tyson’s ability to incite increased adrenaline and heart rate with his presence is a feeling I’ve only felt from a handful of leaders.

For these 3 reasons, I say Iron Mike will always be one of the greatest athletes of all times.

Larry Bird! His upbringing should have done him in....He defied all the odds and became "Larry Legend" and was one of the greats that changed the entire landscape of the NBA. He is still revered today as the boy from French Lick, IN. He never forgot where he came from and knew what a hard days work was on and off the court. He never let the fame go to his head and always took care of his family.

Giannis Antetokounmpo not only has inspired me but he has inspired my 10 year old daughter in proving that hard work, perseverance and a positive attitude can get you so far in life. As a child, his family left his home in Nigeria (leaving his older brother behind) in search of a better life in Greece. When they made it there as illegal immigrants, his parents tried tirelessly to support their family by working odd jobs under the table. Giannis and his brother discovered basketball as teenagers and traveled miles EVERY.SINGLE.DAY to play basketball and work on their game. As the years went on and Giannis became a powerhouse, he was offered a spot on a European basketball team which could have ultimately led to him transferring to the NBA and getting citizenship here in the US. As selfless as he is, he declined because he didn’t want to leave his parents and siblings behind. Taking a risk, he entered the NBA draft and we know the rest of the story. All along the way and all of the struggles he endured, he never gave up and kept working for himself but mostly for his family. His story is so inspiring and because of him, my daughter now plays basketball every day and has become VERY good for her age. She loves basketball!

I still love Tim Tebow. He was the SEC's all-time football leader in career passing efficiency. He has the courage to be different, to be himself, to openly state what he believes and to be undeterred by all the pundits who predict he'll fail. Tebow has the courage to always be positive and believe in himself and his teammates, and he inspires his team by doing so. His Foundation statement says "to share faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their hour of darkest need." I saw videos of kids in high school videos of stopping in mass and doing a Tim Tebow kneel in prayer. He has inspired millions and he also inspires me, a 63 year old veteran.

I have two athletes I look up to, one being Chuck Norris and the other is Tim Tebow. Chuck Norris because of his dedication to the martial arts and body conditioning. The most important thing about both of these MVP's are that they believe in God. Tim Tebow is one of the strongest man to follow his heart and not his peers, even though his decisions are not popular he stands strong.

Warrick Dunn, I did not lose my mother until later in my life but I was the oldest of four boys and had to grow up fast to take care of my younger brothers due to my mother's drug habit while living in the projects of Savannah, I graduated High School and joined the military as a teen father. He has always given back to his community in a positive way.

The professional Athelete who inspires me the most are those who personally give back to their community with time and funds. One who comes to mind is Tiger Woods. His First Flight helps teach less fortunate children the game of golf. He continues to fund and show up at many children golf events. Not for his glory but to raise awareness of the sport and put the focus on the kids. Well done.

Dak Prescott of the Cowboys,
Not only has he helped military with mental health. He continues to be "Beacon of Hope" speaking at fundraisers and he also has the "Faith, Fight and Finish" foundation. He combats and makes aware to fight against suicide and to ask 4 help. He remains an example of taking charge of his own mental health but helps many others!

To me, Wilma Rudolph is the ultimate athlete inspiration. Not only did she break barriers in sports as an African-American woman, but she became an Olympic multi-medal winner despite being diagnosed with Polio as a child. Wilma Rudolph’s accomplishment represents the power of the will to dominate physical circumstances! HOOAH!

The professional athlete that inspired me the most is "The Admiral" David Robinson. The fact that he not only graduated from the Naval Academy but served all before playing professional basketball. Then being a 2-time NBA champion, 10-time NBA All-Star, 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist, 4-time All-NBA First Team, and NBA MVP once he went to the NBA shows that no matter what path you take, if you apply yourself you can be great.

The current athlete I am interested in watching and admiring the hard work is New Jersey's Erin Blanchfield. She is a rising UFC female fighter that has shown time and time again, hard work pays off. She has faced tough opponents and has always been a betting underdog.
Very little social media presence.
Only dedication to her craft.

The professional athlete that inspires me the most is Michelle Alonzie. She’s currently playing in the Women’s World Cup and a microbiologist who studied a Yale. She works part time as cancer researcher at Texas children’s hospital. She inspires me because she proves she can have a successful career in her sport and researching to fight cancer. That requires dedication and time management. She has inspired me to pursuer my passions even if they lie in different domains. She also challenges the stereotypes. She’s succeeding in both a traditionally male dominated field like soccer and a STEM field like microbiology as a black women.

Runners are the toughest athletes… they have to be strong mentally and physically. These two share their life with others to inspire a strong marriage, positive and loving family life and their training journey. They love God and are grateful for what they have been blessed with. The image of the professional athlete can be a totally objective topic. Each generation has had it's share of individual's who faced adversity, overcame obstacles and made an impact on the game they play as well as their fans, communities and even society at times. As a lifelong sports fan, I can honestly say that there have been numerous athletes who have perhaps motivated me, but none have truly inspired me. Pat Tillman will always and forever be the standard bearer of the selfless professional athlete. Many athletes answered the call during WW2 and served with distinction. Some chose to do the same in Korea and even Vietnam. To each and every one of them I stand, salute and honor.
The question of whether the athletes of today would make such an enormous decision is a conversation for another day. But there are a couple of athletes today who I hold in high regard, not because of their stats or achievements, but because of their resilience in the face of adversity. That alone gives me reason to respect and cheer for them.
Above them all is Rex Chapman, my favorite basketball player as a kid. He had high expectations and did have a long successful career... but struggled after taking the uniform off, like many of us. He faced demons and could have become a statistic, but instead, he owned his mistakes, pull himself up by his bootstraps and regained control and purpose in his life. Hail King Rex!

Megan Rapieno! Yeah, I know: seasoned veteran of a tough, intense sport; goal mouth purposely downsized for females. Competitive as hell; constant shadow of arrogant, excessively paid but equally skilled males. Shoot, even the male high school kids are world-class. Coupled with massive regulations: restrictions on dress, personal hygiene, hair color...One would think perferring one's own sex as a partner in sixty-nine countries punishable by imprisonment, or the death penalty in nine others would be "off-putting" enough, at least. Again, why do we have to learn dumb, dated words to some jingoistic ditty? Even, have "to hang" or pretend to care what it says, or signifies once? Or, as we say in the shower, if it's good enough for mom and pop sandwich shops (and they'll cover the cost), or shovenists at ESPY...why not just disregard? Inspiring to see one so maligned rising as ultimate icon of sport.

This is a tough question. I tend to think of Roger Staubach or Danny Noonan, both played for the Dallas Cowboys. Roger Staubach was an Army Cadet and Danny Noonan, an Air Force Cadet. Coach Mike Kryzewski, a Cadet at Annapolis is someone I look up to. He played collegiate basketball and coached Duke University Mens Basketball for 42 years. He even coached at Annapolis prior to coaching at Duke University. We cannot forget Navy Midshipman, the San Antonio Spurs star center, David Robinson. I think there are a lot of veterans in sports and all have had some way of inspring others. This was interesting and fun.

The professional athlete that inspires me the most is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts. I believe Jalen embodies three core attributes that a servicemember needs to be successful. The first is perseverance. Jalen has faced immense levels of criticism and adversity but he never lets that keep him down, he continues to work on his mistakes. Secondly, he’s resilient. During his college years at the University of Alabama, Jalen was benched during the big National Championship game in favor of his backup quarterback, who ultimately guided his team to victory, but Jalen didn’t sit and cry, he congratulated his team despite being pulled early, when something went wrong, Jalen fixed his attitude and decided to support his team when he could’ve easily been overtly frustrated by not finishing the game and winning. Thirdly, Jalen is a leader. Off the field, Jalen focuses on learning about every guy on the roster and their families because people matter to him. On the field, Jalen is the guy that the team follows out onto the field of battle. He’s changed the culture of the Eagles and has them excelling and hopefully going back to the Super Bowl. All things stated, Jalen Hurts is who I think is the most inspirational athlete.

Walter Payton. I am a lifelong Chicago Bears fan and was blessed to see Walter play on the field. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award is presented annually by the National Football League (NFL) honoring a player's commitment to philanthropy and community impact, as well as his excellence on the field. Walter didn't say no to many requests for his time including veterans. This award isn't always presented to a star, however, it does represent how athletes impact many lives in their communities. Cal Ripken Jr. has always been my hero. 2,632 consecutive games played. C'mon seriously. They called him the Iron Man. When he came up he broke the rules for being a Major League shortstop. He was committed, played through injuries, gave 100% effort every day he played. That kind of personal discipline is rarely found these days, most certainly not in today's Major League players. He didn't stop after retiring either. He established a youth baseball league, and continues to be of selfless service to people.
He devoted his life to what he cared about and did it with good moral character.

Years ago, I went to an annual fundraiser dinner for the BoyScouts in Johnstown, PA. The guestspeaker was former Steeler, Merril Hoge. I’m not originally from western, PA so I wasn’t like the locals who are uberpassionate about their “Black and Gold”. When I heard that a former Steeler (of whom I knew nothing) wasspeaking, I was ready for it to be over before it even began…..until he startedspeaking.
Merril Hoge was easily one of the most inspirationalspeakers I’ve ever heard. His mantra is “Finda Way” has guided him throughout his life. Initially it helped him go from a kid playing football in a small townall the way to the NFL. Later in life,it helped him face and beat cancer.
I walked away from that dinner with a profound respect forMerril. Later that year I was fortunateto meet him and he is as wonderful in person as he is I in a group and on television. He inspired me and I recommend his book “Finda Way” or him as a speaker if you ever get a chance to hear him.

I would have to say the player that inspired me the most IS the Goat of his sport. None other than his royal highness king Lebron James. Lebron always inspired me because he has shown year in and year out for 20 years, hell over 20 years loving the game and bringing all his heart and soul into it, seeing him come from no championships to 2 in Miami growing up was huge for me I stayed up way past my bedtime to see lebron and THE FLASH and Bosh. Win that championship yes I even supported him that one year when dirk won. I still wonder to this day why that happened. I mean I saw the interviews but lebron just looked different to me. But growing up and having Lebron James as your favorite player I gotta a little hate but who can hate someone that devotes so much time for the betterment of humanity. How can you not be inspired by someone who builds houses for people, funds scholarships, builds schools. And most important of all respecting the game we love. If it wasn’t for Lebron and well can’t lie, Kobe. I never would have picked up a basketball. I’m a laker fan so I’m glad we got him for once. It’s nice seeing the tomahawk on my side. Go Lakers.

Simone Biles. She is at the top of her career, at an age when most have retired, by choice or by injury, and she took a 2 year break to work on her mental health. She is starting back to make her way to the next Olympics and just not quitting. She's strong, but she is also proving a type of mental strength from being able to ask for help, even when taking criticism. She chooses to do what is best for herself, physically and mentally.

Aaron Judge, he plays baseball for the New York Yankees. He wasn't expected to develop into a very good prospect, but he took advantage of a very small chance he had during his rookie season. He performed SO well that they couldn't ignore him. He then went on to win Rookie of the year, and since then he has become an MVP and the best hitter in Baseball. Moreover, he "bet on himself" during contract negotiations - he had the confidence in his work ethic to perform at the highest level and win the money he deserved. He is also humble and appreciative of all the support systems in his life, and the fans.

Growing up I was a huge into athletes that were all about grit and hustle. The ones that would push through adversity on the field of battle and rise to the occasion. The ones you see in commercials and on magazine covers. Now that I’m older and have 2 daughters, my focus has changed more about what the individuals stands for in the community, as a role model and sometimes what they had to endure to get to their success. For that reason, the athlete that inspires me most is Aly Raisman. She as a young girl and even now as a woman is a role model for change. She stood up and faced her fears and confronted a monster. I don’t know if I could muster up the courage to do. I don’t know if I would have the ability to share my story and give a voice to millions of those that have been abused. For this, she inspires me to face my fears and share my stories because even though I may not battle the same demons she did, my stories may help others to fight and find their inner peace! Phillip Rivers. Despite being infamous for his on-field trash talking, he maintains a strict discipline with his words and refrains from cursing on and off the field. Additionally, he is a devout Catholic and by all accounts a true family man. I know people who are on his HS coaching staff. They confirm that he is highly spirited, competitive and demanding of his assistant coaches but he is also every bit of the family man that his reputations suggests. He famously wore a bolo tie in interviews while in Indy to skirt the team requirement to wear ties while press interviewing. The tongue in cheek nature of his actions remind me of some of the best NCO I worked with in very comical and positive ways. It is a treat to see a dedicated family man continue to give back to the game he loves long after the paychecks for doing so have a myriad of commas.

This may sound strange but Justin Gatlin inspired me the most. A lot of times we conform to our environment in order to stay on top even if that means doing something illegal sometimes. The professional athlete that most inspires me is Megan Rapinoe. She is an American soccer player who has played for several years in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and on the US Women’s national team. She is a hero and warrior to me for not just the vast number of accomplishments she has made on the field, but off the field as well. It is impressive that at the age of 38 she can still compete at such a high level in a hyperactive sport as soccer. Just to sum up some of her achievements on the field are as follows:
• Ms. Rapinoe is just one of fourteen soccer players to appear in 200 international games for the US.
• In 2019, she became the oldest player to ever score in a world cup final.
• She scored 9 goals in world cup play; currently tied for fourth on the USWNT World Cup leader board.
• She has a penchant to score when it matters the most and plays a selfless style of game by racking up more assists than goals.
• One of just seven players to be in the top ten on both the USWNT goal and assist leader boards.
• Rapinoe is a part of a select group of players who have won multiple world cups.
• She’s the only player to be awarded the Ballon d’Or Feminin and Golden Ball.

Megan Rapinoe’s achievements off the field are even more captivating. Back in 2022, President Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the civilian honor you can receive. She was given this award because of being a strong gender equity advocate and leading the change for equal pay for women. Rapinoe received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for being a large contributor to the LGBTQ community. This strikes a chord with me because my oldest daughter is bisexual and came out in her first year of college like Megan Rapinoe.
She stood up against the US Soccer Federation to not only close the pay gap between male and female soccer players, but also to advocate for better medical treatment, overall workload, racism and discrimination. I am deeply moved by the amount of courage and selflessness this showed. She is a warrior-advocate for all American women and girls throughout the nation. She held the league and entire country accountable for wrongs in the past and paved a better future for young upcoming female soccer players. This especially pertains to my 10-year-old daughter who has a strong amount of love and affinity for the sport of soccer. My ten-year-old now has a very achievable dream of not only playing collegiate soccer, but professional soccer as well.
It is very courageous of her to be on of very few professional athletes to be openly and unabashedly gay in a still largely conservative society. She has showed the utmost professionalism and decorum even in the presence of such harsh backlash. Conservative media outlets, including ex-President Trump have bashed her because her stance on equality and making others more aware of the inconsistencies in equality and inclusion. She is a hero and a role model for many LGBQT Americans who are still struggling with their identity and finding acceptance. Her openness truly emboldened my 19-year-old daughter to come out as bisexual.
Another interesting fact about Megan Rapinoe is that she comes from a very patriotic military family. Both her father and grandfather served honorably in the Army. This struck a chord with me too because I too hail from a long lineage of family members serving in the US armed forces. My father served in the Vietnam War, and both of my grandfathers served in WW2.
Indeed, Rapinoe is the face of US women’s soccer, the prolific torch bearer. She is such an electric and fun player to watch, captivating the hearts of audiences all throughout the world and stealing the spotlight. She’s very charismatic and entertaining when she scores. What is even more entertaining is the fact that she is such a clutch player; rising to the occasion to help her team find a way to win when the proverbial odds are stacked against them. President Biden said, “…Megan is a champion for essential American truth that everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect” (Lavietes, 2022).

Jesse Owens, I’m 45 now but in high school I was a runner who was inducted into my school’s hall of fame. During that time and now I have idolized Mr. Owens for not only winning four gold medals but doing it on a stage where he wasn’t wanted. Doing it at a time and place in history where you were killed for being different. The intestinal fortitude Jesse displayed through extreme adversity is why I idolize that man. I was bullied growing up, I’m now 7 years sober and 8 months sober from smoking. I have had adversity in life but I always kept moving forward because of men I could look up to and follow. Jesse Owens will forever be what a true man should be.

I would have to say Jim Thorpe. He was an indigenous person and a multi sport athlete that dominated nearly everything he tried. He played in the football league that later became the NFL as well as MLB and probably his most famous accomplishment was winning an Olympic Gold medal. Even more remarkably, because someone had stolen his shoes just before he was due to compete. He found a mismatched pair of replacements, including one from a trash can, and won the gold medal wearing them.

Jerry Rice has inspired me the most. Yes, he acquired his X championship rings on my favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, but he inspired me because his work ethic clearly matched the three Air Force (AF) core values I came to live by as an AF member and veteran. Integrity, Service before Self and Excellence!
Integrity is probably my favorite. This is when you do the right thing even when no one else is around to celebrate you. Mr. Rice’s work out ethic is known throughout the National Football League as one of the best no nonsense workouts! But unlike so many athletes today, he didn’t post photos of himself working out all over the place as if to say, “look at me, notice me. See how I work out? See my perfect body? See how dedicated I am?” I know, I know, the world of social media was not as prevalent back when Mr. Rice was in his prime, but cameras did exist, however, his main concern was proper training so his physical and mental state would be best prepared to face the strains of football match-ups, not to gloat about how fast he can run, hills he can climb, or how effortless he makes catching a football looks. He proved the world doesn’t have to be in on your plans to succeed and it shows humility plays a factor in receiving the greatest rewards!
Service before Self is HUGE. Mr. Rice was known throughout ‘the bay’ as one of the most self-less athletes ever! I cannot tell you how many conversations I’ve been a part of with sports fans who met Mr. Rice and time and time again, he placed the folks who bought his jersey, 49ers game tickets and screamed their voices out in celebration to him before himself! My two favorite includes the young man who discovered all the commotion at the mall was due to autographs being signed by Mr. Rice. He was not there to sign autographs; he was there with his wife and kids to purchase shoes. But once he was spotted, a line formed, and he remained with a service before self-attitude to graciously appease his fans. But how about you’re at the club on a date night with your wife getting your dance on, but fans are consistently asking you for autographs? Again, he did not complain, he did not wave fans away, he understood fame came with the game! Wow, not every athlete is a snobby spoiled brat.
Finally, ‘Excellence’ is and was obvious with Jerry Rice’s game. There are still records unbroken from his receiving stats and he was often made fun of for taking the game too seriously instead of having more fun playing this fabulous football game. I was there at the Stick, on 17 Dec 00, for Mr. Rice’s last game as a 49er! Of course, the Bears did everything they could to keep Jerry from receiving the ball and for the most part, it worked because it became a game to remember for WR Terrell Owens who received most of the shine during that game, BUT, the excellence of Jerry Rice prevailed because he did NOT have a temper tantrum on the sideline, there was no standing near the bench holding his arms out in frustration to his coaches and QB, no throwing down his helmet and pouting like a 5-year old. No doubt he was feeling some kind of emotions, but he maintained his excellence by behaving as professional all the way to end and the win. Thank you, Jerry Rice, for inspiring me. You can still be a GOAT and behave like a compassionate human being!

Jonathan Isaac; on July 31st 2020 he was the only NBA player to not kneel during the National Anthem! He's a husband, father, author of Why I Stand, a minister, and power forward for Orlando Magics. He started a sports apparel company called Unitus this month. He states that God is the only answer to this world's pain and division! And I say Amen!

I am inspired by the devotion to service and fidelity to this country by the players of MLB that stopped playing in order to serve in the military during WWII. There a number of great players; Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra to name a few. However, as a former Marine and die-hard Red Sox fan, my personal favorite would be Ted Williams. Ted Williams not only had an amazing career as a professional baseball player, but he was also a distinguished Marine Corps Aviator who served his country in both World War II and Korea. This type of selflessness and dedication to service and country, that is a rarity found in only a handful of athletes today, truly deserves acknowledgement and special recognition and should serve as an inspiration to all.

For me is Lionel Messi because he has overcome many challenges in order to play soccer at the highest level, he's had to fight off numerous injuries, his humility grounds him to his biggest aspiration of wanting to be a better person for himself and for others. He's always quick to credit his teammates and opponents. Undoubtedly, he is an excellent role model for young footballers, and he has used his platform to raise awareness for important causes. No doubt Messi is one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

Great question and a very difficult one to answer as you mature in life there are many different athletes (pro/am) that inspiration can be drawn from. I have had the opportunity to witness many athletic feats in both team and individual achievements. For me there are none greater than these few: Deion "Prime Time" Sanders for his complete body of work being a dual sport athlete from High School he was drafted to MLB by the Royals in 1985 but decided to play both sports again at Florida State, winning National Championships in both sports there. He would go on to Playing professionally for Baseball first (Yankees '89) and then for the Falcons in the same year, he would go on to win two Super Bowls (co-MVP in one of them) and a World Series. The many charities he dedicated time to would go unnoticed and he ability to coach and mentor is a testament to all of the great coaches that have molded him. Hershel Walker is two on my inspiration list as one we are from the same area of the world and his personal/athletic achievements are amazing not only a Heisman and National Championship MVP in college (UGA) he was almost the first to win two Heisman Awards, he would enter the USFL and play for the NJ Generals (w/ Doug Flute) winning league championships and MVP honors before entering the NFL playing first for Tom Landry as a Dallas Cowboy - we all know when Coach Landry was fired and the 1-15 1989 (Jimmy Johnson Coached) Team and Hershel was traded in a blockbuster historic trade that gave the Cowboys three championships in the 1990s. Beyond Hershel's historic football career he has a Winter Olympic Gold Medal for Bobsledding and multiple track and field speed wins, also MMA wins as his perseverance is unmatched. Both of these men credit the many coaches and mentors that molded them and when you look at the list of greats that have made them it is more than impressive. The reason these two men of God have been such an influence in my life is their message and neither have ever been afraid to speak on their faith publicly, both have been inspirations to hundreds of millions and continue to change the world making it better for others.

I personally connect with Pat Tillman as the most powerful inspiration in my lifetime of selflessness, courage, and dedication to a greater purpose. "Ironman" traded a three-year $3.6 million NFL contract to serve as "Corporal Tillman" in the Army making $1,500 a month. This was a life-altering decision that I think only a few would make, and many would find it extremely difficult to grasp fully.

Pat Tillman dedicated himself to the service of his country as a more significant and noble endeavor than a career in the NFL. His service to the country and the well-being of others held a higher level of importance and purpose compared to any other pursuits. This is what sacrifice means to me. Three years after joining the Army he paid the ultimate sacrifice. I respected Pat Tillman's legacy during my years in the service and I still draw inspiration from him.

No professional athlete has ever inspired me. I always looked up to pioneers who overcame hardships and obstacles to achieve their individual successes. Some not so successful but perseverance on the road to their goals.
My grand uncle Joe Harris b in 1890 played professional baseball between 1910 and 1930. He stepped away to 'participate in WWI in 1918 and was badly wounded in a jeep accident. Upon return, he returned to baseball. There are a few other males in there somewhere, but none particularly impressive.
I did follow ladies such as Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Golda Meir, just to name a few who became very successful overcoming their own brands of difficulty.
Many obstacles that came my way were easy to overcome because I had experienced similar instances when reading about these ladies.
