The recommendation was done because the Soldier's name came up in the automatic promotion list.

If the Soldier is not ready, then the counseling packet should reflect appropriately. Once a Soldier is denied by the commander from going to the board in the Primary Zone, they should receive a bar.

Why does the Squad Leader not agree? Be more specific and I can give a more specific opinion. The details behind the reasoning would alter a lot of opinions I think. I always look beyond a blanket statement and want/need the details to base my decisions off of.

The Squad leader doesn't agree because the Soldier is a great hard worker, however doesn't multi task, zero leadership skills and no initiative.

While I served as a 1SG, I had a Company CDR who believed any SPC who had TIG and TIS should be promoted to SGT. He believed this because 2LTs receive automatic promotions to 1LT and WO1's received automatic promotions to WO2. I educated him that his way of thinking would taint the NCO Corps. He eventually agreed and then would ask me how many points he should award those who would go to before the board.

Counsel, counsel and then counsel some more. It has to be in writing. I made that mistake long ago, being too empathetic with a Soldier and relied on verbal counseling. Now, good and bad, everything is in writing! You would hope the CDR supports your recommendation for or against promotion but at the end of the day, by reg, it's the CDR's decision. The board is the safety valve, show the counseling to them and they should deny the Soldier.

SFC Benavidez, I agree 100% but this time the counseling mention the non-recommendation.
