If that was my unit's function that couple would be asked to leave prior to even reaching the receiving line, I don't care what rank the husband is, completely unacceptable.

Before military formal functions I always give a LPD on etiquette to ensure this and things like this do not occur. I have seen some borderline gowns but never something to this extreme.

Much like the discussion on "faddish" it's not what it is, it's what it is not. A rule by exception.

A Ball is a Formal / Semi-Formal event. Unfortunately, we, as a society, don't spend much time anymore explaining what Formal (White Tie), Semi-Formal (Black Tie), Business, etc mean anymore. The Military is the last place where it really matters, and even we do a poor job at it.

We've gone from Presidents being sworn in in White Tie (Kennedy was) to the Business Suit of the last 30 years.

Pictured, we see two gentlemen in uniform. One in Mess Dress (White Tie), and one in ASU Dress (Black Tie). We see a number of ladies dressed Formally (in gowns), while the lady showcased is not.

An appropriate ball gown is one that does not bring discredit to the military organization. A leader must make an assessment of their date's attire (both male and female). We set the example for our Soldiers to follow. This officer did not.

It's funny how this picture keeps popping up. It's tacky, yes but a lot of spouses treat military balls like the prom. A tasteful cocktail dress would suffice but I would hazard a guess that a lot of people want to get all dolled up and lack the ability to discern "tasteful" and "tasteless". I would really like to see a more current and relevant example as opposed to one that has been lingering for more than 10 years.

To me, this is something more tasteful than the picture on this question. That gown is the Officer's wife way of saying, look at me I'm hot. It is totally tacky and inappropriate. And dancing like that in a gown like that to boot. A simple gown like this is more in order.

Perhaps she thought rather than an invitation to the Military Ball, that she was being offered Military's Balls, and she was just getting ready to receive what was promised to her?

As far as tasteful, all she needed was a google image search for cocktail gown, and she would have had thousands of appropriate samples right before her eyes.

A Military Ball is kind of like a Prom. The men pretty much all wear the same thing, and the focal point is the ladies. The same rules apply. *Simply put if you wouldn't allow your daughter to go to the prom with a hormone raging teenage boy in a dress like the one being considered, then it probably is not appropriate for the Military Ball either.

*Disclaimer: I want my daughter's prom dress to be a full suit of medieval armor just to make sure the hormone thing doesn't apply so my opinion is heavily biased.

I am a big fan of classic and timeless, a la Audrey Hepburn. Being elegant does not mean being dowdy. Cannot go wrong with black! :)

There are a lot of options out there for information. One link my wife found had over 100 "rules" and guides all the way down to nail polish.

The bottom line is be tasteful, especially as an Officer or NCO. Understand rank structure - it goes a long way as far as respect and making your date (the service member) look good as well.

Truthfully I believe this could have been a classy dress but the person wearing it isn't acting classy. If you wear a dress like that you can't drop it like it is hot or get low...low. Instead you literally just have to stand there and be the arm candy your supposed to be. You can find a classy functional dress but when in doubt less is more.
classy vs. trashy is easy. If you could wear it to church without asking for forgiveness then it probably is classy. If you can wear it to the club to pick up whomever pays the most for a drink then it is trashy.

This is the kind of stuff that undermines the respect out lower enlisted have for the officer/NCO corps. This is the kind of thing that causes good soldiers to loose all there motivation to reenlist. Although I guess it really depends on each person's individual opinion, if someone has to wonder or decide if a dress is inappropriate or not, the default should be "yes".

A formal military event is no place for a spectacle and I think the command has every right to refuse admittance to anyone failing to meet proper standards of dress and that includes dresses that are too revealing.

I would have serious issues about the judgment of an officer or NCO who showed up with a date/spouse in an obviously inappropriate dress and would have no problem discussing it with him.

The officer in the picture included with the question would not have to worry about attending future events, if he was in my unit.

I would have been embarrassed to be at the same ball. I hope that someone in that group pulled this Captain to the side and asked him what the hell was thinking allowing this to take place. I feel sorry for both of them. Frankly, I divorced my wife because she got drunk at my military retirement ball and made a fool out of herself, my family, my daughters, and her parents. Floor length gown, slit should not be higher than an inch (2 tops) above the knee. No side cut outs, and I wouldn't expect stomach cut outs either. Open back is ok, as long as it it not TOO low. Chest should not look like it's about to make you some money by falling out, but some cleavage is typically to be expected since we are all trying to look glam. Women are not expected to look like nuns, but also shouldn't look like they just got off work at the corner of Main and 5th St either.
Too many low ranks try to show off their gf to their friends and have them in club dresses that are one size fits all stretch with slits from top to bottom. Junior ranks need education, and well, in the case of the photo you posted, looks like so do some officers.

In the old days, nobody could describe ponography, but they knew it when they saw it. I've grown more than tired of seeing women 25 pounds more than the halter top was designed for. Some looked like the Michelin Man. There's good taste but there is also a need for good sense to dress in something that flatters, not degrades. We'll always have the small minority that just doesn't get it.

That said, be sure to compliment the young woman in the overused prom dress as that might be all they can afford. We're all family.

The organization hosting the ball should put the expectation and standards out to all the units. If I was up to me, I would encourage the civilian ladies would be formal dresses and for the civilian guys would be wearing suits and ties.

I am really lucky to have the spouse that I do. She is an Army Brat, prior-service member, so she understands how the military functions. It is remarkable, to say the least. She understands that she, and my children, are a direct reflection of me.

If she tried to go to a ball wearing something like the woman who is featured in the photo, I would not allow it. I wouldn't allow her to purchase such an article of clothing. That service member should be ashamed.

I think I look best in earth tones, preferrably nothing with padded shoulders 'cause it makes me look gaunt...I try to keep the slit less than two feet in length O.o ...in all seriousness though, it's a frikkin' military function-act accordingly. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen someone wear questionable attire to a dance club and literally dance their clothes off on the dance floor (yeah, smart decision wearing a tube top that's two sizes too big and then wonder why everyone is looking at you)-military balls require this amount of good sense at the minimum. You're not at the club, be modest at least.

I went to an awards banquet when I was on recruiting duty many years ago. My girlfriend wore a very short skirt that was apparently the subject of some gossip, which I only found out about much later.

I would define 'tasteful' as no chance of a wardrobe malfunction. That said, some women are just built a particular way that they'll get stares no matter what. Not that I would stare, because I only notice because I'm a photographer and have to see everybody. :-)

After 25 years, and multiple black tie affairs, I've seen a steady degradation in the attire of wives and girlfriends of Marines. I think it goes back to the saying "you can take the trash out of the trailer, but you can't take the trailer out of the trash". Not bashing EVERYONE that lived in or live in trailers, but you get what I mean.

I find when it comes to what you wear there needs to be some common sense. You cannot teach or enforce that. One person may find an outfit that is too much and someone else may find the same outfit too little. Only common sense helps provide a compromise. For the record, the above picture I am not focused on the gown but the behavior of the person wearing it. Again, common sense. They do say common sense is so rare it should be a super hero.

A respectful dress to wearer and rank they represent , classy , elegant , if a little fun style should still not be over revealing .. If spouse or date they need to remember who they have came with and wear it with respect .. If person is in military well they must respect their position and dress to fit that .

I've seen this inappropriate photo before and although ok for a club cougar, it has no place at a military ball. We still struggle with appropriate dress code on post/px/bx, probably because we have a force of leaders who do not show the fortitude or personal courage to make a decision on these matters. As a former brigade CSM, this would not get pass my Sergeant at Arms.

I believe that wives are also a reflection of the Soldier they are married to. Regardless of your rank, I know that behind every great man is a great woman. Well, it's supposed to be that way. That being said, I have been to a handful of Army formals myself. My wife has always kept it tasteful and classy, and I loved the dresses she wore. This pic is the last one I attended and my wife kept it very nice.

Eight years in and I had not been to a military ball but I can say this is the behavior I would have expected. Respect for others, or lack there of, was one of the reasons I left the military. We were briefed and warned that this was a class act and not to be tacky, reputations and careers were on the line. I never saw anything like this. I did see some who drank a bit to much and the Commander or CSM got them a taxi and sent them on their way. No one ever said no to a taxi ordered by the CSM or Commander.

An appropriate ball gown for a military function is one that doesn't bring shame upon the service you are representing, either through your spouse or yourself. It's not rocket science to dress with class, but I must say that half of the issue in the picture presented is the male. If he had higher standards for himself and the service he is supposed to be representing with honor, that woman would not be accompanying him...or at least would not be accompanying him looking like a tart. Shameful.

Well that dress is clearly inappropriate. It should be elegant, fit nicely, and make one feel good about oneself. A dress should cover you middle half and not expose everything. Although I do not agree with the dress or their conduct, I also do not agree on posting this picture without their consent. I feel that it was not really their fault because instead of someone stepping in and saying something, people just stood back and took pictures and talked behind their backs. I been to many balls and seen very inappropriate attire and behavior and there is always someone who comes (usually a chief) and removes that person from the event. Is that simple.

First of all rank has nothing to do with character of the individual. Secondly limitations are a must when putting out your dress code so not to embarrass both the guest and the individual's in question. We as leaders must remember that not everyone was brought up the same way so we need to always mimimize issues like this. Not a place for exposed skin!

When going to a military ball. Your spouse is a reflection of you and your leadership. Your leadership not only in the unit but at home. Well, considering the military is an organization of professionals, a tasteful gown is something that would be appropriate for a professional to wear. I can hardly agree with the gowns that leave little to the imagination. The "if you have it, flaunt it" mentality is not something dignified for a professional. If you have to ask if what you're wearing is showing too much skin, perhaps it is not something you should wear. There are numerous options out there where a lady can look beautiful and classy without having to be hanging out all over the place. Less is more is not always the best philosophy. Basically, if what you're wearing is something that covers less than your undergarments, it is not appropriate for a military ball. Military balls are supposed to be formal, organized events that bring units together, not a night out on the prowl or a night club. If you are a service member and you dress like this at said event, you will lose respect and it will undermine your leadership. If you are a spouse and dress like this, remember, it is not your image you're damaging, but the image of your significant other. Something to keep in mind.

I don't know what's worse - her dress or the fake tan she is wearing. An appropriate ball how. Should not show an excessive amount of cleavage or be more than 3 inches above the knee. It also should not show the mid driff.

I don't think this dress is something I'd wear to a ball. I have seen dresses in this format at balls and they still had class and dignity. I think it's the positions of dancing that she was caught in that make the dress inappropriate. I'd also like to venture to say that this is someone's wife and I don't think it's appropriate to have her photo taken and turned into a joke. Which I don't think is the intent of your post; however, some of these comments are not in good taste either. Let's not belittle or degrade this family.

I have seen a lot of things at Military balls, but not that. Having attended balls for some of our European Allies back in the early 1990's. I saw some interesting attire, but what is acceptable at a German Army Ball and an American Ball are not quite the same. Part of me looks at this and says does this person have an issue, one of those its all about me? What other things does she do in public? Captain Clueless does not seem to pick up on the fact that his significant other is showing a wee too much, or maybe it is me. I don't know.

I would have to use more than one criteria but here goes:

1) Would it make the woman look like she made a career spinning on a pole?

2) Does it appear that you paid her by the hour for her time, and it WILL have a happy ending?

3) Would she want HER daughter to be photographed dressed like her and acting like her?

If the answer to any of these is "YES", God have mercy on the soul of that poor Soldier that she is married to and embarrassing in front of his troops and superiors.

How about choosing something that doesn't make you look like a $20 gutter whore?

I don't know the background of this picture (nor do I care to) but I'd be very disappointed with my wife if she wore something like this to a formal event. I'd hope she would have more respect for herself than to present this image.

As for the officer accompanying her... I would lose all respect for this individual as a Leader. This to me shows a PROFOUND lack of judgement and good common sense.

I will have to agree it may not have been the best dress to wear to this particular function BUT If she is proud of herself and she can pull off the look than more power to her. The problem I see is she does need some etiquette training and lessons on how to act at a ball or dance based on the function and wardrobe she has chosen for that function. I am willing to bet a few adult beverages may have been involved by the time the picture was taken and I would be more worried about the person that felt it was necessary to take the picture and post it all over the internet. I also believe the Military may "own" the soldier but they do not "own" the spouse or family . I was also brought up that until I am perfect do not judge or worry about what others are doing unless it is hurting you personally and work on your own self improvement until you make yourself perfect. JMHO and I do not expect that everyone will agree but thats why we chose to defend this Great Nation .

I recall a Navy Holiday Party that my husband and I attended while in Japan and the dress in question was so tiny that when she walked cheeks could be seen and on the dance floor Vag in full view. My husband asked her to leave and upon speaking with his sailor who brought her it was revealed that she was an escort he hired so he would have a date! So, one an unrelated note, the dress is hideous.

More to the point, I've been in Guam (although the port is irrelevant if it's foreign) a few times during sub ball, and many people either don't have significant others, or just don't want to waste a couple thousand dollars flying them out. So who's on the chopping block? Strippers, duh. Now, to be fair, those strippers are usually pretty excited to put clothes *on* and attend a nice event, so they tend to be classy, but I can't imagine ANYONE being upset about it if they weren't.

And here I thought Marines might have a sense of humor. Silly me.

There is a time and a place for everything. This obviously was not the time or the place. Perhaps a momentary lapse in judgement. I can honestly say that before any official function/ball we have or participate in, I cover with our military members the proper etiquette of apparel. I especially let then know that if the 3 B's aren't covered then don't bother showing up. You and your plus one are representing the unit and our core values. I'm sure in this picture there was more "values" being represented. I would hope that a fellow solider, marine, airmen would've discreetly asked them to retire early in hopes of not drawing any more attention than they already had. Moot point now that it's on social media.

"Conservative" is the word that comes to mind. My wife, also (although she did not sign up for it) had a duty to model what right looks like. Like CSM Private RallyPoint Member said, if that was my ball, I would have asked them to leave.

I actually have many photos, from many, many (too many) balls, but this is my favorite I could locate. Sorry that I messed it up by being in it.

Here's the deal, your civilian girlfriends and wives might not be aware of our more conservative culture, but that's where is is your job to let her know. If you're supposed to tactful correct someone of any rank for being in the wrong, you should be able to correct this.

Ask to see the dress WELL in advance, if you are unsure of your date's idea of class. This way if it's not appropriate, she has time to pick out different one. (Some of us ladies take weeks or months to find and have the right dress tailored, as some places require you to place your order 6-8 weeks in advance)

How do you tell her without hurting her feelings... Yeah, very few of you guys can pull this one off, I know I've worked with enough military men, and I'm married to one too (bless his heart), and what sounds honest and harmless in your head, not always the case when you say it out loud... All you say is, "Wow that's a (insert positive adjective here... beautiful, stunning, sexy, phenomenal, fun, etc.) dress!!! I love it! But can we save this for another occasion? The military is very conservative, and as much as I would love to see you in that dress, I wouldn't want you to feel out of place." Now one of two things could happen... She says, okay and asks your opinion on something else, or she's still slightly crushed because that was the only one she liked and now she has no idea what you mean by "conservative." Show her that picture of Audrey Hepburn, use adjectives like, traditional, classy, floor or near floor length, and she should know what to do.

If you still need more help or have questions, ask a military female! Believe it or not, we're always happy to help with girl things!

What I don't see pictured, are wraps. There is etiquette requiring that ladies shoulders are covered until the formal part of the event is over. (Obviously dancing is the informal.) The obvious answer to this question is undoubtedly a conservative one! An appropriate dress covers all the naughty bits(completely). If you want it to be a little sexy, perhaps one that slits no further up than just above the knee. I believe the reason this photo is taking so much heat is because of what's happening in the picture. A lot of you are questioning the dress when your response might be more because of your feelings of what she's doing. Yes, the dress is a little revealing but if they were posing for picture as opposing to dancing (at least she is), then maybe this isn't that much of an issue. Our society and our world is changing: gay rights, women in the infantry, tattoos, etc. They're are bigger more important things going on right now than to be worried about this woman and her dress and a military function in which most of the personnel there will get drunk to begin with. Just my two cents though.

She should have never been allowed to enter. Dresses should be long and any side slits should be kept to just right above the knee and no cut outs at all. Low backs on the dress shouldn't be too low. The dress should be of darker color meaning no brights like orange, yellow, or lime green. You are supposed to be representing the person you are attending with, you should never get out of control drunk or give your date a strip dance. And above all wear some underwear.

Well.... if you're woman is dressed like she's an employee of a strip club or if her gown says, "Let's get in on like I'm in a club looking to pick up a man!", then I'd have to say that "gown" is a no go.

In my opinion, military balls are an event to let loose and have some fun with fellow service men/women and their significant other, but really.... Military balls are also a formal function and everyone (active duty or otherwise) should dress appropriately.

And now for a little stop and some humor...

A young woman was pulled over by a State Trooper for speeding. The trooper walked to her car window, flipping open his ticket book, and asked for her license and registration. As she handed the trooper the paperwork she said, “I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the State Trooper’s Ball, aren’t you?”

He looked at the woman and said, ” Ma’am, State Troopers don’t have balls.” There was a moment of silence, he closed his book, tipped his hat, got back in his patrol car and left.

Honestly glad I retired from the Army some years ago. It is situations like this that appall me. Sad part is I know exactly what ball this was. I don't remember the exact year. I believe it was either 1999 or 2000 but it was 5th Groups ball. On a positive note, the Group Commander did tell him to leave and take his wife and if they wanted to return then she would need to be dressed appropriately.

I think we have all had a bit to drink at a ball, kicked our shoe's off and did some dirty dancing. Being military or military spouse, you still are supposed to have some etiquette. The dress would be fine for a close Christmas party or similar function but as a spouse it does state that we are supposed to keep military bearings as well as our active duty. If this was Michelle Obama doing this, what would our kids think, some would say do what she wants. Other countries would be mortified. We do need to have some class and bearing for our structure. It is sad to see that our country usually doesn't care one way or another.

We as a society need to be able to move on and accept that what the majority of you are calling "appropriate" are gowns some of the younger generation would find in their grandmother's closet. I am not certain I can quantify a tasteful military ball gown, however, I can say the one pictured isn't appropriate so I will give it a shot. An appropriate military ball gown does not draw undo attention. An appropriate military ball gown should not say "look at me" more than once and certainly not for more than 20 to 30 seconds. I agree with the CSM from Fort Stewart. I find it difficult to believe that person was allowed to enter the event much less stay long enough to dance. Unfortunately those of us in the Army with a sense of fashion and respect for others are faced with having to deal with the results of deminished recruiting standards. I suppose that comes with 15 years of war, but it doesn't have to. People want to be part of something exclusive. If the Army establishes a standard of education and appearance in recruits and maintains standards throughout training and within unit assignments situations such as the one pictured can be avoided or at least diminished. Had I been in attendance I would have been torn between quietly suggesting to the couple that her appearance was inappropriate and they should leave and simply inquiring as to the cost of hiring an escort to attend an evening such as that, because, truly, the only place you see someone dressed such as that is either a Hollywood awards event or an upscale gentlemen club.

Depending on the "Theme" of the Ball.... she might have been wearing the correct gown, HOWEVER, her choice to "show" what she has was definitely in poor taste and should have been corrected when she was noticed to behave in this manner. From the appearance of the other gowns in the picture, i'm guessing the dress was not in relation to the "theme" of this ball. This dress would have been a good choice for the "Vegas Nights Ball" or the "Salsa Dancing Night" events.

I've look at the photo for a bit, and the only thing I can say with all honesty is that it really doesn't seem to be the appropriate garment for this specific occasion. Power to the woman for feeling confident with herself to wear such a dress. This is more a dress one would wear to go club hopping and not an elegant affair such as the military ball. I do, however; think her hair and heals are quite lovely and she is obviously a fit woman.

I've seen ladies wear this type of attire to formal functions and they become quite the spectacle. I love to "people watch" and she would've given me ammunition for at least three party conversations. Let's give credit where credit is due though. She is in amazing shape and obviously very proud of her physique. Who knows? Maybe she is a personal trainer but there is a time and place for a dress like this and I'm fairly confident that she didn't walk The Red Carpet that evening. As males, our eyes are drawn to areas that are both covered and uncovered. We look for the contrast and I'm sure all eyes were on her that evening. My question is what do WOMEN think of women who wear dresses like this at formal functions?

This is definitely unacceptable. Your spouse is a direct reflection on you at these functions, so not only should she want to look nice and classy for herself, she also should understand that she needs to look nice and classy for her spouse. One person commented "have you seen what prom dresses look like now" - we are not in high school! It is easy to find a beautiful gown for a ball that is not a "prom" dress.

Additionally, it is not a cocktail party either! A military ball is a formal event requiring evening dress. That mean a long gown, not a cocktail length dress.

While the cocktail dress I posted a pic of is perfectly acceptable and appropriate for some functions, a formal military ball is not where it should be worn.

As a female in the military, I am required to wear my mess dress to these events, so it drives me nuts when I see women dressed inappropriately, rather than in a nice evening gown, which is what I want to wear! :)

The last ball I went to, there was this woman wearing what can only be described as a giant g string. It only covered her hot spots.... Nipples, butt, and her genitles. I thought I was at a strip club, not a military function!

I went to my brothers a few years ago, that dress is totally unappropriate for a military ball... I've been to a few military balls and seen where they actually wouldn't let a women in with the stomach section cut out.. Military balls are a image of pride.. That lady made it a joke.

I will not share to much about this picture, as I was there and I will say that there were many members that were embarrassed by this behavior. I will also add that alcohol had a lot to do with leading it to the point it is depicted here in the picture. There were many who disapproved of this scene and wished the senior leaders would have reacted appropriately and asked them to leave.

It really does not require a specific act of genius but I have seen some spouses wearing pretty racy stuff. I didn't like it then, and still don't. The vast majority during my two commands were proper, and tasteful. During my last, my Brigade HQ was in Las Vegas, and I saw stuff there that made ME blush. I didn't have to ask anyone anything. It was understood. I always applied the Mom rule.

Was this in a foreign country? Perhaps this was a shock and awe tactic. Appropriate clothing concerns have come up a few times at military functions ball, dining out, etc that I have attended over the years. The standards of good taste still ring true. Best guidance I ever heard when it comes to "is this clothing appropriate?"---is "if you have to ask don't wear it!"

There is a time and place for everything, a formal Military Ball is probably not the time nor the place for that dress. Different venue, different group, Hell go for it. I like it to going to a nude beach; if everyone is nude than it is not that big a deal, its expected, but if you are the only one nude, there lies your problem.

We can all agree that this dress is far from Formal as far as Military etiquette goes. Is it appealing? Yes-No? My conclusion is; etiquette starts at home and subsequently filters to other areas. Her Husband should have had a civil conversation with his significant other and explained why it might not have been appropriate for the environment they were in, and if the advice given was not received then it would have been appropriate for the master of ceremonies to make a suggestion. The issue might have been resolved much easier with a memo on appropriate civilian formal wear prior to the ball

Very distasteful! The officer shows very little respect for his fellow servicemembers, allowing himself to be with such a tasteless date. Advertising sex is not what the balls are about. After spending 22 years in the service, I can't recall seeing anything like this at any of the balls that I have attended. As one said earlier, if a junior enlisted member would have tried this he probably wouldn't have made it in the building.

Prior to a military ball there were always a set of regulations in regards to what appropriate attire was that were sent out to everyone. If a female was going to wear a dress it had to be a single piece dress that covered at least the space from her chest to about 6 inches bellow her knees at least. Split dress, either ones with a split or ones such as the one this woman is wearing were not allowed. That's what I remember from the dress code in regards to dresses, but just those few guidelines I know rule out a LOT of options since we seem to be in a time period where everyone feels that it's necessary for everyone and their mothers to see parts that should remain private.

Don't mind my fatness, but this is the dress I wore to my husbands SeaBee ball back in 2011, it has straps and a shawl as well. There was an officer at the ball who was asked to have his date go and change...I say keep it simple and remember you are representing your so in uniform.

To be honestly tactful, that dress should have been saved for a romantic dinner at a high class restaurant where he would be wearing a tuxedo and not a military uniform.
For the military ball, which I have never been to, something with elegance, and tact should have been first thought on his and her mind. But not everyone has the same ideas of elegance and tact. No, I am not suggesting anything prudish, just something that leaves a little to the imagination.

What we find appropriate for a soldier is understandable, but their spouse is not our place to judge only to support. If the spouse approve of what they wear, they do not need the approval of others. Lighten up Francis! Goodness sakes this was a freakin dining out. Whether a dining in or out, those functions let us blow off steam and build camaraderie and here you are sniping at a woman who was brave enough to do both. Seeing an attractive woman in a sexy dress sure is too much to handle when you get back from a 9 month deployment of fighting the Muj and seeing your buddies get hit. I feel far more comfortable when the formal is populated with the standard 200lb wives in dresses that double as table clothes. That is far more proper, appropriate, formal and "to standard". It is also bullshit...let people of all stripes have fun. An appropriate gown for any military function has to follow guidelines of common sense, class, taste and elegance. Take the gown shown above. This is a DO NOT WEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The gown style you should wear is one that leaves ALOT to the imagination of your date and other gentlemen in the room. Elegance/ettiquette dictates that as a rule of thumb. the slit should not go past the knee, fabric should be in accordance to the temperatures of the region where the event is held, and follow the guidelines of the military spouses/escorts unit.

As a veteran, I will attend my second ball this year. It is an honor-NOT a right-to attend these events. I will post pictures of what is appropriate in my opinion of what to wear or not to wear for the event of this magnitude.

All of us have to chill, decompress and not be so uptight, up-down-all around, this country is going back to War OP Tempo (gulf war III) our families brothers fathers,uncles,sons (I can go on and on) will be volunteered to go back and fix the issue that combat can only temporarily gain, its political will that needs to do the hard choices to fix it. We can only do so much. our military is overtasked, overburdended,underpaid, but the mission still gets done. thank you all for that! I come from generations of patriot warriors and seen the suffering on both ends. We need to stick together and support each other. Personal note if cap'ns sweet luscious momma wants to flaunt the goodies and cap'n is GTG with, chalk it up for troop morale! "thank you sir-mam!" all we want is our country to love us...as much as we love it!

a tasteful military ball gown fits tastefully with out revealing everything that God gave you. A simple black dress can be very tasteful if worn with the correct accessories. modest is always better than gaudy.

The captain in this picture should of taken his wife shopping; evident she is not mature enough or has common sense not to dress like a stripper at a unit function let alone a ball. Where was the CO and CSM. They should have stopped them a the door and turned them around. I might be old school; but the ildea of showing off your wife in public as a lady and not a tramp. That they can do in the privacy of their own home.

At last the photos of her here are classier than some I have seen of her. On these you cannot tell that she is going commando.

The dress itself is not that bad. If she had stuck to slow dances or anything less energetic there would be no comments. It does not show that much cleavage, and the slit up the leg is fairly common for dresses.

This is Not what I expect to see at a Military Ball. Their are regulations for every type of dress
the military has. For both service members AND civilians. In my old units, every time a ball was
announced they ( Chain of Command ) handed out a copy of the regulation for us the service member could show our other halves.

I served many years ago. I went to one of these. My date was a stripper who I met in a class at a local community college. She bought her outfit at a thrift store, and she was orders of magnitude more appropriate than that.

If you have to ask if this gown is appropriate then you don't belong in the Army or should ever attend a military ball. The senior officer attending the ball, should have talked to her husband or date and have him immediately remove her from the event. This is disrespectful and dishonors the integrity of most of Army wives, Fiances, or girl friends. I don't know, maybe we should ask the Supreme Court?
