What's Camp Carroll, South Korea like? Its my first duty station and thats all I know about it.

Well I can tell you how it was in 1993 but I am sure things have changed immensely. It has a history dating back to 1950 as one of the northern points of the Pusan Perimeter.

It will be what you make of it. Any experience that will be given is relative to the individual. Advice would be...don't be a barracks rat. Have fun, knock out college, study for boards, and keep yourself outta trouble.

Location-wise, it's close to Taegu, so there will be plenty to do beyond the "ville" immediately off base.

Can't really tell you much about it now, but I was there from June of 1993 to June of 1994. And to what I can remember, well I remember the weather, the civilians outside the grounds and some of the food. Military standard are pretty much the same, well ok, technology is different, but the Army way I'm sure is the same.

Camp Carroll is a rather hilly but small base near Waegwan, S. Korea. You can take a free U.S. Army bus to Taegu or Daegu, is how the S. Koreans spell it. If you go out the back gate & turn to the right you will find additional barracks but the historical significance is to the left side of the road where approximately 44 soldiers hands were tied behind their backs with WD-1 or commo wire & placed in a trench. Their North Korean guards shot & killed all of them. Our military in South Korea is always on a war footing since there has never been a peace treaty signed by both Korea's as of yet. Camp Carroll is also next to rice paddies & stinks to high heaven during the warm to hot summer months. Korea is also very hilly/mountainous & gets very cold during the winter months. Lots of time to take correspondence, college classes, & play softball or other sports. I served there from July 4th, 1989 to July 3rd, 1990. Camp Carroll was my second tour of duty in the ROK. It is definitely what you make of it, I would definitely stay out of the Ville which is out the back gate & to the left. Careful what you drink alcohol wise, be careful what hard luck story you hear from the Madam or the bar girls because a fool & his money are soon to be separated. SFC Gregory S. It's a small post near Taegu. In Taegu there are also the small posts Camp Walker and Camp Henry. There's a lot to do in the immediate area and they have an excellent subway system. Be sure to go to the Korean Baseball games: The Samsung Lions. The intensity of ther fans are on another level.

When I was at Camp Casey, it was instrumental to keep good communications open with your first line supervisor. Bring someone with you who is experienced with the surroundings of your post. Get to know not only your chain of command, get to know the natives as well.
