When you advance and get into a position of leadership, be the leader you would want to follow. I have not only held the close, but passed this logic and ideal onto others I have helped advance along the way. This is great advice for military and civilian advancement.

Has to be the financial advice a senior officer gave me when I first came into the military.

"Pay me now, pay me later". Take 50% of every pay increase (COLA, rank increase, longevity increase, etc) and enjoy it as a pay increase (pay me now) and then put the other 50% into long term savings of whatever type you want to do (pay me later).

The best advice I ever got was when I was a brand new 2Lt. He was a TSgt in resource management when I met him my first day on base. We became lifelong friends. He gave me the everything you need to survive in the AF lecture, from a TSgt to the 2Lt. In that was “if you ever are tasked to be an equipment custodian, never take the previous ones assurances everything is in order before you put your hand on every piece of equipment you are responsible for.”
That piece of advice served me well!

The best advice came from a job interview. I was fresh out of truck driving school, it was when women hadn't flooded the field yet so it was hard to prove I could do the job.
The guy said, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease!"
So, after that I made a pest of myself with phone calls or stop bys to refresh their memory of me and my application. I was on the road in my own truck not long after that conversation!

To stop blaming others (external forces) for what they do to me and instead, grow myself (internal force) to learn how to dodge said people. Basically, always blame myself for everything in order to learn from it. Blaming others teaches you NADA.

A mentor once told me that, as a servant leader, no matter the role (family, work, club, etc), your greatest strength will be in the value that you add to those you're responsible for and to. After every engagement with someone or at the end of the day, ask yourself, "did I add value to his/her task or my unit's mission?" If the answer is no, or you're not sure, then make a determined effort tomorrow to get better.

Greatest piece of advice was to learn how to forgive people who have done you wrong, understand that the wrongs they did possibly could have been a life mistake that they learned from, remember they have no instruction book for this journey we are all on. People are at different stages in their lives that might not necessarily be I'll intent in causing pain or trauma. I learned to forgive my mother for giving me up at two weeks old after hearing this and opening my heart.

Whatever you do, you have to remember to get your mind right. If you go into it with the wrong mindset, you're gonna make it harder on yourself the whole time. If you have the right mindset, it will make it a lot easier.

The best advice I have been given is to pursue what you love to do and retire when you can’t do it anymore. Keep yourself active if you do a job that you can handle and enjoy, it won’t feel like work if you enjoy it. It will keep your mind and body strong.

I was a career Army officer, I was in a quandary as to how to go for my next venture. I could pursue a Master's degree or take a service school like Army Command and General Staff College (by correspondence). I had a senior officer advised me your an Army officer; think about that.So I chose the latter at the time and completed non-resident CGSC. This resulted in my being selected for a resident service school when I chose a joint school to attend. My Master's degree opportunity came in the next assignment when I earned that distinction. So apparently, that was good advice!

I was on a USAF special operation TDY in Vietnam. I was notified of my promotion to E-5, SSGT and subsequently assigned to an important extra duty. My instructions were minimal so I sought out our Ops Chief, a grizzled, long experienced CMSGT. I explained my dilemma and asked for help, he looked straight at me and friendily growled, " You're an NCO now, start acting like it and figure it out!" That stuck with me for the rest of my 26 year career, Enlisted and Officer.

When I graduated from high school I went to a college in Platteville, WI. After three years I was tired of going to classes and doing home work. I flunked out and returned home with my tail between my legs. I explained to my parents and my Father, who was a WW 2 Army Vet, told me that I should enlist in the US Navy ASAP because the "draft" was very active. I said "OH OK Dad" and took the train to Chicago the next day and enlisted in the Navy. When I returned home that evening my Dad handed me my draft notice that was delivered in that day's mail. I gave him a big hug and a thank you.
I have never forgotten that moment.

When I was first shipped overseas to a Nato base it was overwhelming. Very few females and all countries. I had Greeks, Turks and US troops in my barracks. None of them had females so I struggled, and ball bagged to mom creating a HUGE phone bill. She finally just laid it out having been an Air Force brat and Army wife. She said "have you considered changing your perspective? I love you very much but get your head out of your xxx and recognize the amazing opportunity you have to see Europe". Then promptly hung up. No cell phones back then, just the one on the wall in the hallway. I stood there stupefied and woke up. CHANGED my life then and now! Gotta love Mom wisdom.

My Great-Grandmother told me that the success of any type of relationship is for both parties to put 100%, not the 50/50 that people talk about. If each person puts forth 100% you then have 200% into it most of the time. When one person feels sick, off, worried, stressed out and can only put forth 50% then there is still 150% to keep the relationship stable and moving forward. If both people, at the same time, can only put forth 50% then there is still 100% keeping them going. She said it does not matter what relationship it is, if each person gives of themselves 100% there can only be success.

This was the advice my grandmother gave me when I kept getting in trouble for the way I was talking to people (one time led to a ridiculous DRB and a master chief who holds a lifetime grudge against me). Now I think twice about the way I say things rather than just blurting out what I think.

Do what you say you'll do, on time, every time - NO excuses. If you're being paid, do what you said you'd do for the agreed upon fee, on time, every time - NO excuses. Look the the person or company rep you made these promises to in the eye and make sure make sure that they agree that you fulfilled your obligation and that they are satisfied with your work - then, shake his or her hand and ask them what else you can do for them. Doing this every time I perform a service or provide a product for any entity has fed me and my family for 70 years!

Physical possessions are worth more than money. You always need to have an emergency fund, preferably someplace that it is available 24/7 with no restrictions. When the price of groceries get almost unaffordable it’s nice to have a large pantry full. When new tires for your car are not available it’s nice to have a set in your garage. Thanks to my Grandfather who raised a family through the Great Depression and the Oklahoma Dust Bowl Days.

Before boarding a Marine troopship (USNS Gaffey) bound for Okinawa (1965), my WWII USMC Vet father advised me to get into the troop compartment as soon as possible (while everyone else was lollygagging around) and lay claim to a top bunk (5 high) near a ventilator. It payed off in spades 20 days later when we skirted a monsoon near Japan; all the puke responded to gravity and I had a plentiful supply of nice, fresh N. Pacific air!! JJ Kato

The best advice I was ever given was about having quality time with my wife. My father told me that the best 'foreplay' was to take the trash out, do the dishes, vacuum the house, clean the bathroom,; essentially to manage the upkeep of the home. This way, he claimed, the wife has no pressing household burdens and can feel free for hugging and kissing.
I am not kidding, I have always gotten my share and extras to boot. Not only great passionate quality time, but breakfast in bed, special treats, etc; all by performing the majority of the household chores. A small price to pay for the favor of my wife.

Think of life as a football game with four quarters. The first quarter is birth into adolescence and the beginning of your education years. The second quarter is your teen years to college. The third quarter is the age at which you begin your career marriage and children then the end dog your career to retirement. So the fourth quarter is retirement and whatever that may entail to the end of your life.
So the point is don't spend your whole life working and doing more for others and working yourself to the point where you have nothing left but a tired broken-down body and soul to be able to enjoy those fourth-quarter years. You only have one life to live and one chance to live it the best way you know how.

Stand tall, look them square in the eye, while you give them (him) a very firm hand shake and tell them the absolute truth. This advise has never steared me wrong. Be it a job interview that I did not get the job, I have been called back for other jobs the were better. Or, just simple business I have remained respected for giving others the truth while looking them in the eye.

Before Basic Training, my dad told me, "You're gonna screw up a lot. Just learn from your mistakes, go to bed, wake up, start the next day fresh, and just remember what you learned from your mistakes." He also told me to take Basic one day at a time, which helped a lot too.

The best advice ever given to me during my time of service came from my former platoon sergeant when I had been promoted to a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). At the time it wasn't making sense to me why the enlisted soldiers began treating me differently (saying things behind my back) following my promotion and thankfully the advice given to me was "if people are talking about you you're doing something good". It was this constructive advice which allowed me to move forward into this new chapter of my career.

My Grandfather (a WWI Vet) always told me to never bet on anything except yourself. Man, did that advice keep me out of a lot of trouble.

Also, my Grandmother (his wife who lived into her 90's) told me - before I left for Vietnam - to always sleep good and s**t (believe it or not). Well, that was difficult to do in Vietnam, but in my later life it has proven to give me good health and a sound mind (I think).

And my Dad (a WWII Vet) taught me that there is no such thing as "can't."

If you know the rules, regulations, process and procedures better than the senior NCO's and Officers, you will have a firm foundation to stand on, what it takes to accomplish the tasks and you wont be pushed around. I've had a number of Senior NCO and Officers try to pull the wool over my eyes or try to get me to do something stupid but when I quoted rules, regulations, process and procedures, they knew they were messing with the wrong person. They would walk away and choose an other ill informed Airman.

From my great uncle, Lewis McIntosh, a 107 year old WWI vet: "I used to be a genius. Long ago, back in the days. Now I have the mind of a ten year old. And the heart of one as well. I had a drill instructor in boot camp at Paris Island in 1977 who called me "Duck". He told me Duck (while chewing my ass) (If you want to get ahead in my Marine Corp you need to know everyone's job and tell nobody yours.) I took what he had said to heart. The best advice I was ever given was to be early for any obligation, preferably at least ten minutes. They said to me that if you are early, then the leader would not know if it was ten minutes or 30. The reasons stated was that I would not be the one to delay the event and it would show respect to other participants. Very true, as I consistently saw latecomers tasked with extra duties, reprimanded, and in a few cases when a recurring problem, demotion or termination. I'm proud to say that I had a perfect on-time record over a 45+ year adult career.

When I first arrived at Offutt AFB in 1986, the Master Sergeant that picked me up to in-process gave me the advice. That advice was to work on higher education and it would open doors for me in the future. He was completely correct. It took me some time to finish a Bachelor’s degree but it was very much worth all the hard work. It landed me a career position that I enjoyed and recently retired from.

Always read the bulletin boards. Wherever you are, take the time to look at and read bulletin boards. You can glean a lot of useful information, even in the obscure locations.

This advice was given to be by a Sergeant when I was just a Private in the USMC. I have found jobs and even found a roommate once and it turned out to be a fellow that we were in the same First Grade Class as children. I know this sounds so simplistic these days, but I still read all bulletin boards.

Life is like driving a car; the windshield is large and the rearview mirror is small. The rearview reminds us of where we came from and is important for reflecting on lessons from the past, but the windshield is large so that our focus can be on what lies ahead and for us to see new challenges in advance and changes in direction we need to make to make it to our goals in life. The point, on the road of life, is to glance in the rearview mirror but to keep our focus on what lies ahead (through the windshield). Upon returning from deployment I remember the Chaplain helping us to acknowledge the new mission (struggle) that lay before us trying to reintegrate with the person we used to be. Things HAVE changed, avoid the struggle (discomfort) where possible of trying to be the person you used to be, roll with the changes as much possible, and NEVER!!!! feel like you are alone (ask for help/reach out your hand/help is possible).

Make a personal copy of my medical records and have them notarized.
(Had them notarized by a Lt. that wasn't willing to call the Navy Cpt. Dr. that suggested it. Ended up being VERY helpful w/ a VA claim when they said they couldn't 'find' my records later)

I talked to seniors in high school or kids that have graduated from high school and they are not sure what they want to do-I always ask them if they ever tough about joining the armed forces and then i go in detail about duty stations around the world, pay and benefits and college education benefits after serving just a few years. so we are clear Im not a recruiter but someone who served for 21 years with multiple deployments. Some of them today are SFC and MSG and MAJ and LTC and or Warrant Officers. they have also left to their civilian world for successful careers. They never forget my advice and many times throughout the years they contact me and let me know how good their decisions were to serve and for listening to my advice.

"Work is important, but family is sacred."

Let me describe the setting into which this advice was given. I was going to college outside Chicago Illinois in my mid-twenties. I had been in the military about 6 or 7 years at this point. My wife and I had two small children, Eli and Ruth, with a girl on the way in a few months. We were hundreds of miles away from both of our families. We were both full-time students, both of us now in the reserves having come from active duty, both with part-time jobs, and I was in ROTC... we were busy.

There was a lot of "growing up" going on with us as well. We had already been through the initial culture shock of switching from full-time military back into civilian life, but what did we know about college? What did we know about marriage and parenthood? Little to nothing, that's what.

The school I was going to was widely known for rigorous academics. At this point, I had taken classes at three different colleges over the years and this one was the real deal. Coursework demanded your intelligent engagement. The homework was constant, the papers were long and challenging, and the tests seemed specifically engineered to give you a heart attack. Being older with a family was a huge challenge that didn't fit well into that enviornment. In comparison to the traditional college student who does not have the same competing life requirements, I felt like I was always at a disadvantage. I talked to my professors about the strain of everything I was juggling around the middle of year 2. One of my mentors in the ROTC department, a battle-hardened Army Ranger, told me that he pictured me as the cadet who was always spinning plates. Like a circus act, he tought I was running from plate to plate, trying to keep each one spinning before they fell off their stick and crashed to the ground. One piece of advice that I received during this time stood out in particular, it was from Dr. Keith Johnson.

Now, all of my professors, including my ROTC cadre, recognized my situation and encouraged me through it. But no slack was given; standards would not be lowered. I even remember a time in one of Dr. Johnson's classes where he mentioned that if you got an A in his class it was because you earned it. And for that reason he didn't give them lightly. Well, one evening Dr. Johnson and I were talking about some upcoming assignment, I can't remember which, and after a brief pause he told me " You know, there's something I have learned over many years, and that is that family is sacred... Patrick, work is important, but family is sacred."

He went on to tell me that he believed in me, that he believed I could keep doing well with my grades and in completing my assignments by the assigned deadlines. But, he told me not to ignore my time with my family. It was ok if I didn't get the best grades or soak in every bit of education, so long as I understood where my priorities were. Everything I was doing in college was important, surely, and he wanted to teach me all he could and it was important that I did my best to sincerely learn all I could. But all of that paled in comparison to the responsibilties I had as a husband and a father. If I was having to choose between spending a few more hours on a paper, or spending time with my family, he wanted me to keep in mind the sacred relationship I had with my family, versus the very temporary nature of my work and education.

When I graduated and comissioned, I soon found myself at Fort Campbell with the 101st Airborne. This seemed to be God's way of putting Dr. Johnson's words to the test. With as much professional reservation as I can muster, let me just say that the 101st is not what it used to be, or should be today. Despite my best efforts, and that of a few outstanding leaders, my time there was awful. I took Dr. Johnson's words to heart though, just as I did the very day he spoke them to me. As the old saying goes, "The Army is a jealous mistress". Well, lot's of things in our lives are like that. But, I have learned that apart from my faith in Christ, nothing in my life should be considered as sacred and as precious as that of my family. So I fought within myself to protect what matters most. There was a lot that needed to be done in my section and while I will always commit to hard work wherever I am placed, I will also keep my priorities straight and clear. I make decisions based on what is truly important and urgent, and what is ultimately fleeting and can wait until tomorrow. I do this because I know that work is important, but family is sacred.
