Across the street was a young couple with a new baby, so my wife couldn't resist. He was a recruiter for private colleges...highly educated, bright guy, liberal academia mindset, but not old enough to be set in his ways. When I was relating what I did and where I was coming from, and how important education was for progression in the Air Force, he thought I was kidding. He actually said, "I thought you just said education is important! That's hilarious!" He wasn't even trying to be insulting, he was just being honest. He had been so insulated from the military his whole life, he actually thought the military HATED education.<br />Many beers later, we grew to become good friends, and my family and his (now in Oregon, still liberal, but with a little better understanding of the military) stay in touch and share photos of our kids. After a short while I would let the young man know That I served my country, was trained in the use of law enforcement tactics, owned guns and have participated in classified missions that I can't talk about. All of these things are true. The potential suitor has no idea that some routine deployments are classified. However, their imangination would take over and they come up with all kinds of things on their own. <br /><br />Fear of dad was always a good motivator. My daughter actually useed it too. There was a walking trail up to the monument but everyone was directed to use from entrance.<br /> A grandfather with grandchildren came walking down the road and headed for the trail. I stopped him and said you need to enter through the front entrance. He got smug and said he takes his grandkids up here every year and use this trail. I told him "I can't let you thru." He replied,"you and I both know you don't have any bullets in that gun!" I dropped the magazine and showed him the rounds. His jaw dropped and his face turned pale and he walked on. I had gotten to know the owner of a comic book shop in town, and one day he had a table out front of the BX selling his wares. During the course of discussion the topic of the new camouflage uniforms came up. He goes into a rant on how stupid they were and ends the discussion thus:<br /><br />Him: Do you see that guy over there?
