We had a SNCO who was "strongly encouraged" to bring a date, even though he was recently divorced. (Don't ask me whose bright idea that was, I still can't understand it.)

So he brought two, had them dress to the very edge of propriety, and had them make sure everyone knew they were being paid for their company - and that they were DEFINITELY going home with him that night - together. He had a huge grin on his face the entire time.

(And yes, they went home with him together. Where they all laughed and shared stories about reactions for about 15 minutes until the cab he had called for arrived.)

The funniest thing I ever saw was a paratrooper, SSG one each, wearing dress blues with his pants bloused and jump boots. He left that particular affair rather quickly, after a LTC did an on the spot correction that began with the words "WTF are you doing?" Not exactly tactful or professional, but funny as hell.

At the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Marine Corps Ball in 2005, during the cake cutting ceremony, the Command General went to cut a piece of cake from the ceremonial cake (one corner had real cake, the remainder of the cake was fake) only to discover that the entire ceremonial cake was fake. After trying all four corners, the Commanding General requested several slices of "real cake" for the ceremony. The audiance was aghast then thought it funny. The ceremony proceeded without incident

A 2LT heard our Battalion commander say, " oh yeah team it is dress blues and tennis shoe night" , the 2LT showed up in his dress blues and Nike sneakers at the USAEUR ball. Needless to say he did not stay very long.

When I was a young, married LT, our battalion had a formal, mess dress ball. About half way through most of the wives left to go to the ladies room together (as the ladies tended to do). When they came back, all of the LT’s got up together and went to the men’s room. It was pretty much impromptu. The battalion commander looked at us like we were nuts. We got into the restroom and realized there was no room for everyone without standing in the stalls. We waited a couple minutes before returning to our seats as if nothing happened. The Bn Cdr and his wife said it was the funniest moment of the night.

I attended my first navy ball in 2022 with my wife and friends. One of the base chiefs and the base captain acted out a scene from Ratatouille. He wheeled out a cart from the kitchen with a pot of gumbo and had the base captain try and approve before we could be served.

I was at a dining in at Fort Myer around 1990. My office’s table was right in front of the stage where the entertainment was, which that night was the US Army Chorus. They came out and went right into “Do you love me - now that I can Dance”. All of a sudden the female lead singer comes right at me and drags me up there and starts boogieing with me in front of the entire unit. I did the best I could but it was extremely embarrassing. Next day I run into the O-6 commander, who tells me, “pretty good job on the floor last night!”.

A mixed quartet of Chiefs and junior officers grabbed helium balloons and, in squeaky voices, sang "Anchors Aweigh" at an open mic. Even funnier was watching the faces of the upper echelon officers looking on with disapproving faces.

New soldier in our unit dressed up a blowup doll and tried to introduce her as his girlfriend. She didn't make it past the welcome line. Joes and NCOs thought it was hilarious and we respected the balls on that kid; Os didn't have the same sense of humor.

Being the faithful young man that I was, I thought it would be a good idea to bring my girlfriend at the time to the ball. As we are waiting in line 2 different ladies that I "knew" called out my name , came up to us and asked me a few questions. "Who is she?" "Why don't you call me?" "Where have you been?" Ect.. Feeling alittle hot under the collar and not knowing what to say, we hightailed it outta there. Needless to say I didn't have a good rest of the night with my girlfriend.

I was a photographer at the Marine Corps Ball on MCAS Iwakuni Japan in the mid-90s. Many of the invited guests were Japanese Ladies. They, being very respectful seemed to think it was a requirement to salute as their service member sponsors did. Looking from behind it looked like a silent drill team as everyone was saluting. I thought to myself, Wow! that's something you don't see. Of course, they were all informed it wasn't required. I didn't think it was appropriate to photograph it and didn't. I didn't need a picture, ill never forget the respect they showed. I had a good laugh though. I am the Devil Dog on the right. !2 years after my active duty ended.

I watched my LTC puke up his GROG, after taking a huge drink. Funny, yes!
Embarrassing for him ... maybe. After it was all said and done, he partied like it was 1999,

In 1985 Des Moines the 103rd COSCOM had their annual ball. I was an E6 that had been invited. My escort was a Major I had worked with and had also been invited. This was same year that the Minnesota Twins won the World Series! Many attendees were from Minnesota. After numerous speeches by command, it turned into a Baseball verbal throw down!!! So funny! The CG pulled rank to get the twins officers to shut up

We were all sitting at a table husband was on active duty at that time with a master sergeant Cross from Hampstead a lieutenant they work together in security police all of a sudden potatoes started flying across the table corn started flying across the table like two little kids they were having a food fight Not the proper place for something like that I looked at my husband and I looked at the lieutenant and I said you two boys quit acting like little kids will you act like your age they both just busted out laughing because I had corrected about the whole table started laughing in the commander of the two men said that’s a good woman she’s got head on her shoulders she corrected both of them no matter what their ranks were and again the People at the table had to laugh

Well it was my first Marine Corp ball and my co asked me to dance with his wife because he didn't dance. Keeping the story short after I got through with the dance with her the next day while on post he asked me to attend church with him, I guess we did a little to much salsa for his comfort lol.

When Marine officers from Kaneohe were tasked to attend a ball on the other side of Oahu, they were late due to traffic and had to quickly change into full dress whites. Upon which, one found his socks, white socks, to go with his white shoes, had been omitted from his kit. Those shoes were kept white by a liquid polish which he had packed - so he stood in the receiving line with ankles made white with a thick layer of shoe polish. Only his wingman knew.

I was stationed at Feucht Army Airfield near Nurenberg Germany. We had an Aviation Christmas Ball. Gifts were being given out to the group, based upon the state where your driver's license had been issued. Indiana was called. A lady screamed she had this one. She was holding her license up with one hand when she started running towards the speaker's stand in her high heels and ball gown. Right before she reached her destination, she slipped, feel on her bottom and continued sliding until she ended up exactly in front of the speaker's stand. Her legs were spread-eagled, her hand was still holding the license up in the air and she was facing the speaker. She got the prize, but her husband got an awful lot of teasing.

It was NOT the funniest thing nor an actual ball...
In 1976/77, at Ft. Belvoir, VA, an Army buddy and I used to hang out at the base USO rec center. Often, the entertainment was square dancing.
As I recall, President Jimmy Cater had part of our group come to a jamboree at the White House. The dancers were well received.
I remember the pride that those dancers exuded for weeks.
Square Dancing and the Army are a match made in Heaven: The dancer's follow the dance-caller's directions. It helps, when the Drill Sargent can actually be polite, as a cadence keeper!

Many years ago, sometime in the 70s, a friend of mine who had never married and was in his 40s, decided to "Jump the broom!" His chosen bride was a previously married and divorced lady. His friends and military co-workers elected to throw a pre-wedding party for him and his bride. Several senior Officers and NCOs, and many others of all ranks were invited to a Large off-Base gathering place which had a huge sign erected in front along the roadside. This sign could be rented and used for welcoming invited guests and attendees to the wedding Party. The NCOs who were designated to sponsor and prepare the sign and welcoming verbiage, considered themselves great pranksters and understood the solemnity of the occasion. So as each group of guests arrived by car, they were greeted by these words on the sign: WELCOME TO THE PCOD PARTY OF SMSGT XXXX XXXXXX! Everyone who entered the gathering place asked as they entered, what does that sign mean or signify? The three NCO sponsors advised it would be revealed later in the evening during the gifting ceremonies. Sure enough, the three NCOs stood before the crowd and explained that the abbreviated lettering on the sign was to let the Groom know his "Pxxxy Cut Off Date or PCOD" was coming very soon. I mean no disrespect and hope no one is offended by this true story. The bride and groom were good sports and laughed along with the crowd and the party lasted well into the next A.M. They were married a few days later.

A skit put on as part of the night's entertainment. Three "teams" had to "propose" a way to place objects into orbit (this DI was at Vandenberg AFB, home of the Western Test and Launch Center, and launch site for almost all polar orbiting US launches). The Guest Speaker, served as the "Source Selection Authority. (SSA)" A panel of diners served as the "Source Selection Board (SSB)." After the three skits, including mine, the SSB recommended one of the other skits...I mean one of the other "proposals." However, my "proposal" was half a dozen guys on trikes in raingear who cycled themselves across the dining room floor in a demonstration of an innovative orbital insertion capacity. The Guest Speaker chose my team; the lesson was that the SSA has the authority to select any proposal even if the SSB's recommendation is different. Also, it was a hoot!

The funniest thing I've seen at a military ball was a civilian who attended with his wife/date and was asked to wear a coat because her dress was overly revealing (lingerie...). Perhaps the civilian didn't realize even they would be held to the formal dress code standard.

Same ball, two events in common on Adak, AK. We had a "compound" with Marine guards with an O-3 Cpt. OIC. While we were upgrading the compound, the O-6 Marine Barracks Skipper flew in to take a look. As were were explaining how the security stuff worked in the tower, a fence alarm went off. As Marines were spilling out to the site, the cameras pan/tilted to perfectly capture Lance Simmons taking a whizz through the fence. Fast forward to the day of the ball. Bruce (OIC) decided he couldn't fit into his chokers so sat in the sauna for a non recommended length of time and didn't hydrate after. He shoehorned into the chokers. The ball starts and Bruce starts drinking beer... lots of beer. We Seabees put the last year in video review on the big screen. At some point, Lance Simmons infamous action was followed by Bruce gagging, turning blue, and falling out of his chair. He was being choked naturally. A Leatherman knife job fixed that. We put word around the ballroom that Bruce was horrified his Lance was put up on the screen and he was looking out for his troops. We were kind enough not to put out the sauna piece.

Another year, another ball. We had a 4'11" 94 pound pocket nuke named Laurie. She was an artist on Ma Deuce. Whenever in the badlands, everyone wanted her thumbs on the paddles. Back in homeport, I had a female Senior Chief SEL who asked if the women in the Command could wear evening gowns to the ball. Sure, knock yourself out. Nobody had ever seen Laurie in anything other than shaggy BDUs. Night of the ball, Laurie enters in this stunning blue gown and nobody recognizes her but Senior and I. So we drift her way and decide to prank the room. Laurie is all in on introducing herself as Laurie's sister Layla. Laurie is sick with the flu. So I have Senior get her launched to the correct table and the game is on. This gorgeous girl. Do I make a play on her? She's Laurie's sister and I'm not going to risk her rage. Lot's of conflicted young bucks in the room. Good time had by all and we kept the secret.... until. Out in the badlands again. Getting pressured. Chatter wanted to know if Laurie was on Ma Deuce. She got tired of being asked so just yelled "I'm here! Do I need to wear my blue dress to prove it"? No more chatter. Next ball, Laurie wore a dress, was stunning, and won the limbo again of course.

1968 USMC birthday "ball" at Dong Ha was understandably held in a large dug-in bunker, lined with sand-filled ammo boxes. 3 supporting Army spotter-plane pilots were invited wearing their very coveted Marine flight suits - one piece zip-ups. One of said pilots had just received a "Dear John" letter, had partaken of several Black Label beers, and was not in the mood to be a quiet guest.

When the mess trays of cheese spread and that pink meat stuff (liverworst?) came out, and replaced his seat on a bench, the pilot turned around and sat back down - in the cheese. He was immediately pulled to his feet by two junior officers who were repaid by a face-full of cheese that the pilot had scraped off his rear. More was slung across the room, finding targets - sparking counter-battery retaliation and escalation to involve nearly all officers and all food present . The hilarity of 15 minutes of flying food only ceased with the arrival of the senior staff, cake and Mameluke sword.

The oldest and youngest Marines were called forward, dripping with food. Even at attention, few could stifle laughter at the bewildered look on the faces of the CO and staff. Soon, cake cuttings only added ammo, as the battle continued with the Army pilots and others stripped to their skivvies to facilitate laundry. The General and staff beat a quick retrograde.

The following hot days' stench made the bunker uninhabitable. The airfield fire tanker truck was called in an unsuccessful attempt to wash the walls. The bunker was soon burned and rebuilt.

Way back in 1975 or so, Luke AFB hadn't had a Dining-Out for at least a decade, we in the JOC learned. Gung-ho guys that we were, we decided that we'd plan a fancy & formal military event for the entire 58th TFTW. I (the local boy) chose the historic Westward Ho hotel's cavernous ballroom in downtown PHX as the venue, and we had hundreds attending this highly anticipated - soon to be infamous - event, spouses & dates included. All was going well, with enthusiastic, experienced senior officers honchoing the traditional ceremonies. Plenty of wine carafes were being consumed and glasses "dinged" with silverware followed by toasts & "Mr. President, I have a joke!" All was going so well, and we JOC organizers were quite pleased with our success! However, the dignified nature was short-lived. We failed to properly supervise our non-JOC Mr. Vice, whom we appointed based on this F-4 Jock's O Club reputation as a humorous & entertaining "party guy." At some point during banquet service, after plenty of red wine, this young Captain decided to employ the old Dining-In (meaning no dependents present) practice of pickling wine-soaked dinner rolls from the back of the room towards the white mess jackets at the head table. Of course, we guys all loved it, until collateral damage included the face of the Wing Commander's wife... Mr. Vice ended up face down at his solo table in the back, and, to my knowledge, there were no repercussions. I'm just glad that, before he passed out, he didn't yell "Dead Bug!"

I was a young 2/Lt. Army Nurse Corps officer at Womack Army hospital, North Carolina sometime during the early 1960's, pre-viet Nam era. . During a reception at the Officer's Club, I was wearing my army uniform proudly when General Westmoreland passed by. He stopped to talk and looked me over. Then, with a glass in one hand and a finger pointing toward my chest which was decorated with my one Good Conduct medal, he leaned forward and looked to the other side, and asked in a serious tone, "What's the matter, Lt.? Couldn't the other one win a medal ? I was so takern aback, I had no response.

We had put on a show of the past to the future. One of the volunteers geared up in a g-suit that he zipped up the sides (imagine tight cowboy chaps), tripped on a loose string, and stick walked instead of stumbling trying to keep his balance in a slow motion fashion as he almost fell off the stage that would land him in the middle of the Commanders table. Then the people seated at the tables all scampering to save this poor young man

The balls in my units were invite only, and I was not one of the "cool kids".
I do have more of a "SMH" story though.

While I was an MP in Germany in the early 90's, I did have a post Marine Corps Ball interaction with a young Lance Cpl who was a Frankfurt Consulate Guard while I was doing guard duty at the Abrams Complex. He was 3 sheets to the wind, and he decided that the traffic cones we were using to block one lane needed to be thrown at the guard shack. I come out of the shack and he yells "SEMPER FI!" and grabs another traffic cone, then he starts spinning around in a circle to build up momentum to launch it onto the roof of the shack.
However, his intoxication level has him stumbling and staggering, and he hits the curb and face plants on the grass and sidewalk. He jumps up screaming that he is going to "kill the F$&%^@ who cheap shotted him" and points at me.
Two other Marines who are with him are unable to stop him as he launches himself at me, staggering off balance the entire time. He rears back to hit me, misses and punches the brick wall. Cue more profanity and an attempt to be Bruce Lee, and I just push him to the side a couple of times to keep from hurting him.
The other two Marines are finally able to corral him, and I tell them to just get him back to their barracks and keep an eye on him before he gets in trouble or seriously hurt.
