I think the best thing that has happened to me in the military is being taught discipline and leadership. These two things will continue to help me out long after I've left the service.

The military made it possible to obtain a college degree. Later they military has provided me medical care and a pension.

SGT Michael Smith The G.I. Bill helped me obtain my degree which led to my working my dream job for 33 years. The leadership and discipline skills helped me throughout my career and into retirement. I was discharged in 1972, but "Once a Marine, Always a Marine."

Leadership is right at the top. I learned to have pride in my country and my brothers and sisters and the things we do around the world. I can spot a Marine anywhere. But I was also trained in a trade that I was later able to carry into the civilian world. I worked on aircraft and continued to do so after getting out. I have 35 years of working on military aircraft and it has given me great satisfaction over the years as well as sustained myself and my family. It is a great feeling to see them in action on the news or youtube videos and say I fixed that. I know when my repairs go into combat they will bring you back again. Pretty darn good for a farm boy from the mountains of Va. A lot of us wingers get called POG`s but I know for a fact it`s good to climb on a bird and get where you want or need to go or see that mailbag delivered along with supplies.It`s all good..

It taught me about honor, courage, respect. It taught me that the team is more important than the individual, and the mission is paramount. The Air Force focused my attention, kept me from bouncing through life like a gnat and kept me out of trouble

I would have to say Honor and Integrity followed by leadership. When I was a newbie, esp. during my 1st enlistment in the military I never envisioned myself being a leader let alone a Senior leader. My how things changed. It's almost like eating something you really like, once you taste it you want more. I just wished I could've done more.
Also I voted for attention to detail because before the military I never looked beyond the task at hand, no matter how hard my dad tried to get me to do.

It put me in the presence of some truly exceptional human beings from my Drill Sergeant (SSG Thode) in BCT at Fort Campbell, KY, to my wife of 44 years (Jane Gray) who was a senior at USC vic Fort Jackson, SC, when we met; others include mentors 1SG Donald G. Grinnell, COL Adrian Stilson, DAC Jack Hiller, CPT Steve Comeau, 1LT James Rausch, COL Russ Simonetti, Dai-uy Thuyet (ARVN), Y-ut (CIDG), SGM Phil Price, COL Steve Mifflin, COL Charles Thornton and friends SGT Butch Bydalek, PVT Chris Katsafanis, CPT Tom Umphress and a great many more. Each of these people grew me in some important way and to each of them I am grateful.
