What's the most realistic naval vessel movie?

Of all the movies about submarines, carriers, 18th century ships, etc, what do you think is the one movie that is closest to real-life than all the others? Why?

The only personal experience I have "living" on a naval vessel is sleeping over on the USS Massachusetts with my boys as cub scouts. Man those bunks were small! I remember the scenes from "The Big Red One" where you see the crowded conditions on the troop ships and that looked pretty realistic. The other two that come to mind are the original "Moby Dick" and "Horatio Hornblower" both Gregory Peck movies that look to have some authentic scenes.

I can watch Master and Commander every day. Das Boot was my favorite "modern" flick. Anything but Battleship will work.

I guess I missed the direction of the question "realistic" since almost no one alive today served on a old WWII diesel boat especially German. I for one could not speak to its "realism" hands down a good movie but as far as realism who knows.

Definitely Top Gun...and had I not shot soda out my nose just trying to type it, I might let it stand and see how many thumbs down I can get in a day. I liked U-571, captured the tightness of the quarters and displayed how resilient crew members can be in doing what it takes to get the job done.

I've never been on a ship, so I can't say, but since my father was in the gator navy (on an AKA and LPD), and my son will be assigned to a LHD in September, I have to throw "Away All Boats" out there.

If you are talking submarines, it is "Down Periscope". Take Das Boot and Down Periscope and you have an accurate depiction of submarine life.

CH (MAJ) William Beaver I like the Hunt for Red October. The movie was made by combining real stories, (Soviet Navy officer named Valery Sablin led a mutiny on the frigate (not submarine) Storozhevoy—not because he wanted to move to America and embrace democracy, but because he believed the current Soviet administration wasn't socialist enough. The Kremlin sent 13 ships and three aircraft in pursuit of Sablin, who was arrested and executed for treason and a Soviet Navy officer named Jonas Pleškys did take his ship (a submarine tender, not a submarine) to Sweden instead of its intended destination, and with CIA help successfully defected to the United States.
