In a private conversation, in the privacy of my own home. I told my wife that I was not a big fan of the base commanders Officer's all-call's at the O-club. There were a couple hundred officers and their wives at these mixers. Not my idea of a great time to mingle about smartly with people who I had no contact professionally or socially other than these quarterly events. I knew and was friendly with every Navy officer, CPO, and PO that my duties put me in contact with.

My wife was friendly with the Barracks XO's wife. For reasons that escape me, my dislike of the all-call's came up in a conversation between my wife and the XO's wife. I was called to the XO's office, locked at the position of attention and had my ass high volume handed to me for about 3 minutes. The topic, my dislike of the all-call's. He followed up with an order that I would say nothing to my wife about the ass chewing I just got. Whereupon I informed him that
1) I was going to the all-call, never said I wasn't going, never intended to not go; [he freely admitted that his wife never said that I intended not to go.]
2) The CO can order me to do something. No one can order me to like doing that something. (I guarantee no one ever knew I didn't like the all-call's before.)
3) The XO's authority does not extend into my marriage, and I will discuss any %$#@&! thing I want with my wife as long as the topic is not classified.
4) The XO will stay out of my marriage, end of discussion.

He immediately started handing me my ass again. Whereupon I informed him that he would have to continue this in the CO's office, if he wanted me present. Did an about face and went to the CO's office. The CO ordered us to neutral corners. The XO never broached the topic with me again.

Ok, this is what happened, we were in formation and our drill SGT. was inspecting our unit and we were in Fairbanks, Alaska it was cold and we were ready to be inspected and return back to our barracks but this one solider was standing next to me and she was being chewed out for not having her laces in her boots, who does that? I laughed until my tears in my eyes and was reprimanded for laughing loud, hard and long. I had twenty push-ups to do, I did them but kept laughing gave ten more to do and then my drill SGT, stated, I hope you don't push your way to china.

in 67 68 - vietnam dressed me down (or tried to) for saluting him in passing on way to PX after I explained the rank salute = target to him, he wasn't buying it, because "We are safe on a Base Camp". where on his renewed command, I complied, and thank God the windage or something of the sniper was off, as I di di'd he/or she triggered one, barely off. See what I mean, you don't have to wear a higher rank to know some things.

TOP had 28 years in service, served in WWII, Korean war, and in Vietnam.

He called everyone "John", one day in the 82nd 2/505th Inf, in company formation, TOP addressed a FNG as John, the FNG told TOP, my name isn't John.

TOP than said loudly, so everyone in formation could hear, he told the FNG, "As long as we both know , what we both are talking about, JOHN!"

Made sense to me, and still today, it does.

In Guantanamo Bay at an undisclosed location, there was a gate that was open 24/7 so you could wheel food carts between two buildings. We got word that the gate would be shut in a week and would remain shut after that point. I was not present for the briefing from the CO that we are to PRETEND the gate is shut and wheel the food carts around a longer route for "practice". I can't make this stuff up. A soldier tells me of this new instruction, I let him know that is silly and I'll take the talkin' too. Turns out, I did get an ass chewing for walking through a pretend gate.

I did not actually get chewed out but, I had a nice mustache and a Major told me to trim it. So I did and when I reported back he said it was not good enough. So I went and trimmed it leave two little tufts under my nose and slicked my hair back to resemble The worst German leader ever. He then said it looked good. I then went and saved it all off and started growing it back not saving it off until 17 years later.

I sat at my boss's desk while he was out of the office and while I was working I would fidget in the form of folding up the corner of his nice, paper mousepad. He had major OCD. When he returned and noticed, I had the pleasure of rearranging a dumpster as "punishment," described as "bird strike prevention" because we located near the flight line.

Also got chewed out for not opening and closing his camaro passenger door properly one day. He required everyone to wear booties over boots before getting in...or else.

He was a real a peach sometimes. Good times as a young E-3 trying to figure out military life. ;-)

I refused to eat "wiggling" rice (maggots) and my platoon leader (basic training) and I were arguing that they weren't moving and a corporal made me lay on my back with my arms and legs straight in the air while hollering "I'm a dieing cockroach" I added "I ate the food in the chowhall". I got extra duty for saying "I ate the food in the chowhall.

I was in boot camp U.S. Naval Service. We had a recruit that would get up in the middle of the night after taps and go to the (head) bath room. Well one night he got up took his shorts down to do his business. However he was asleep walker and others told me the recruit was still asleep as he proceeded to use the bathroom (head) on me in my rack sound asleep. Everyone thought this was crazy so they woke up and was about to give him the beating of his life. However, I awoke and forgave the recruit and stop the beat down. As we all look back on this we found the entire situation to be comical to say the lest.. Thank God I did not become the toilet for the recruit to use.Needless to say this would not have been a pretty picture.

When I was in basic training in Fort Dix NJ. Had a young Drill Sergeant who couldn't remember the cadences and would mumble thru them. So we all would laugh and got chewed out because we didn't know the words,lol! Yeah did alot of push-ups because of it.

Not really chewing out, just strong hazing. Going through Jump School in 1968, I had a strong stutter that I had gone to speech therapy for 12 years. We had to simulate jumping out of a plane by jumping from a 34-foot-high platform onto a zip line, yelling "1001-1002-1003". The idea was to instill the action that if your parachute did not open by 1003, you were to pull your reserve. As I stood preparing to jump, the Drill Instructor yelled up, "Sweet, don't count. By the time you get to 1003 you are gonna be dead!" My last name was Sweet, first name Dick, but that was another story.

I was a Lance Corporal in The Marine Corps Air Wing, and just transferred from Camp Geiger, NC to NAS Memphis for my Basic Avionics school. Our first formation found me in the front row while our platoon Sgt. called the first roll. At the completion of the roll he asked if there was anyone whose name he hadn't called. I raised my hand and he approached me and stared at my nametag, sewn into my fatigues, which read GIRARD. Then he glanced at his roll sheet and hollered in my face, "You dimwit, I called Gizzerd. You better answer when I call it from now on." I listened from that day on but he never made that mistake again.

During hygiene inspection in bootcamp, the recruit next to me had an erection poking out of his boxers. He started to report that he had no issues to report. the DI started screaming "stooooooop!!"
he then asked WTF was that as he pointed to what was protruding from the boxers. The recruit, who stuttered, responded "Sir a B-B-B-Boner Sir!" our DI smacked the said protrusion and said "if that snake pokes its head out again he would rip it off!!" my mistake was laughing and spent the next morning getting thrashed before chow because i thought it was funny.

So, I got called into the Master Chiefs office one morning, when I arrived, I could see he was very upset and one of the guys who worked for me in our shop was there.
I had sent this sailor to clean the Master chief’s office, and he did an outstanding job, the master chief came over and showed me his coffee cup and it was sparkling clean.
Unbeknownst to me or the guy I sent to clean the office this mug had been with the master chief for many many years, and it had a good coating of old coffee on the sides that made his coffee taste the way he wanted, and now it was clean and nothing tasted right.
So, after about 10 min of yelling, he told us what we were going to do to fix it, we were to make 6 cups of coffee a day in that cup until it got the correct amount of brown gook on the sides.
It was back in 1989 so I can’t remember if we ever got to where he liked it but I doubt it

Back in the day, I was stationed at Barber's Point Naval Air Station. Admiral Zumwalt had just changed the grooming regulations for the Navy. It allowed some facial hair and a bit longer side burns. We were standing personnel inspection one morning, and the Commander and his crew were inspecting the sailors. They came to me and they were talking about the new regulations on side burn length. The commander looked at mine and remarked to the others with him, "now these would be about 1/16th of an inch too long. I wanted to get a ruler and have him measure 1/16th of an inch! I was "gigged" for it and the guy with the clipboard took my name.

It was actually myself. I was chewed out because I got chicken pox from a fellow sailor whose kids had them. I was chewed for not thinking of team and that if they could they would give me a dereliction of duty write up. What kind of child was I that I didn't get chicken pox like a normal person and I had to make my fellow sailors do more work. Etc. Etc. When I got out of sick I was on restriction for 3 weekends.

Showering. Butt naked at parade rest. All I could do was hold my laughs in, there was no fear of basic training after that. After long days and then meetings while others showered - I waited until everyone was asleep and snuck into the showers…I’ll never forget DS Gaston, and my quick reaction to parade rest with no thought of covering anything. One SSG was told by a Captain that the vehicles at the motor pool needs to be straigtened out and form a line. SSG decided to tell everyone to park them in a straight line. 1967 a heuy ( bell helicopter) crashed into the woods just outside Carine Field , Fort Rucker, Alabama . I was off duty waiting for a friend when I saw it go down so drove fast to where I saw it drop. we were on a gravel road so had to hike off into the forest to where we could see the smoke. The Helicopter was on its side burning I dove through the top window above the door and managed to get a Bell Rep pilot out of the chopper before it was totally ingulfed in flame. I then helped a captain pilot away from the inferno all while bare footed. while sitting talking about what possibly happened a lieutenant and rescue crew finally came. the lieutenant yelled at me to go see if the ambulance had left the field yet and show them the way to the crash. I stood but fell again because I had a piece of plexiglass in my left heel angry I sped back into Carine field pulling up to the fire station next to the day room used for training pilot cadets. some cadets were boarding a bus and one turned towards me and began to chew me out to which I told him he had better get on the bus before he couldn't. I then heard a sharp command from behind me to turn around and stand at attention which I did and found a Major staring at me. The Major chewed up and down then spit me out with you will be court martialed for your behavior.
later while I was washing the blood off me I was ordered to the Company Commander's office and was again chewed out the threatened with court martial.
The next day I was ordered to the battalion Commanders office and when I knocked on the door
the Colonel said come in and when I did I saw the Major standing there at attention . the colonel told me to take a seat , I did, and he began to ream out the Major for hindering one of his men in the act of saving lives. The Colonel then made the major turn around and apologize to me. Oh if looks could kill!

I was working on the flight deck in front of my hanger in Point Mugu. The E2 Hawkeye was turned up and ready to fly wheny number was flashed by the pilot to come aboard for troubleshooting. As I boarded the Radio Officer in the back got my attention and as I approached he began to scream at me (complete with spit) about the light not working. He undressed me and my relatives for about a minute and told me to be standing by when they landed, and to immediately get off his bird (complete with all the cuss words). I met the JG at the plane an hour later and he proceeded to cuss me out all the way to maint control. As he was telling how incompetent me and my crew was he filled out his work order. It said, and I quote, "map light does not work in the O F F position" i never said a word as he left. My closeout said "recalibrated O F F switch to O N position, light is now working per navop. Was worth the chewing I got from the Warrant and the CMC to see the JG (call sign Genious from then on) win Kangaroo Court.

My drill instructor in boot camp chewed me out for not pronouncing the "s" in "Illinois". He said that I was intentionally making a mockery of the Marine Corps (because we don't pronounce that "s" either). The whole platoon had to do squats with our rifles extended in front of us (elbows locked out) until I admitted that I, indeed, intended to mock the Marine Corps. Then I got chewed some more and WE got more pain...

I was at a at Ft. Ben Harrison on a stop to a two week tour of duty for an Engineer District. It was a short stop at the library on the base to gather information for my project that summer. Walking down the street my hands were full and my mind distracted by the project. An Army sedan passed. I looked up and saw at the last second that the vehicle had a subdued insignia on it which probably belonged to a Colonel or above. Tried to salute but the sedan passed me by the time I got my my had to the cap. Went into the library where I went for the books I needed. In about fives minutes the sedan driver (Sp4) came into get me. A Colonel who was the overseer of the nearby school on the Base was waiting to chew me out for not saluting his vehicle in time. He was very serious and made it sound like the world was going to loose control because of my failure to get my hand soon enough so he could see it. I was a Major at the time. I got chewed out for collecting aluminum cans and recycling them . I lived in the barracks and was getting my room inspected. The room was spotless and my cans were in a bin in my closet . So apparently I’m not allowed to recycle because it creates clutter in the barracks . So I had to keep them in my cars trunk .

The most ridiculous thing I experienced being chewed out for was working as a groundskeeper. The owner had me plant a fig tree. After a couple of years the tree began to bear fruit. After the few figs began to ripen each day the owner would check the figs. Everyday for about a week the riped figs began to disappear. I had no idea what was taking them so i tried red pepper, maybe raccoons? Figs still came up missing so I tried a net, maybe birds? Still the figs were vanishing. The owner got so angry she threatened me with," If one more fig comes up missing I will go out to the garden (where I had sugar baby melons growing) and burst everyone of the melons growing!" Wow! I was shocked. Well I still am not sure what was eating or taking her figs but I know the raccoons got to the melons before she did.

On May 10, 1969, while serving as an EOD Specialist with the team in Qui Nhon, I was wounded when a bad 81mm HE mortar round I was attempting to move to a demolition area inside the 184th Ord. Bn. ammo dump detonated in the back of our 3/4-Ton pickup. I was wounded by shrapnel in my upper back and 2nd-degree burns on my neck and ears. My CO, then CPT Dennis Lorance, was punished by 1st Log for allowing me to move the round because the rendering-safe procedure was to blow this round in place due to the dangerousness of the fuse, the M-24. Dennis was relieved of his command, but eventually went to the 133rd Ord. Det. (EOD). I never knew this until just a few years ago. The 1st Log assholes who did this never bothered top interview me. I would have told them that as the senior E-5 on the team, this was a decision that I made, and that Dennis had considered the potential possible danger of this round with a bad M-24 fuse. Dennis was a former EM and a great CO. Treating him this way is still infuriating to me.

We were own a classified helicopter mission. I was a 1st Lt, but in command of the mission, even though the pilots outranked me. Upon mission completion, on our way back to our base, we heard an emergency call from a pilot who had just ejected from his jet. One of our scanners saw his chute. We were over hostile territory and we knew his survival on the ground was nil, so we diverted, contacted him on a discreet frequency, and directed him to a clearing. We then authenticated his identity, and rescued him. When we got back to base, the full bird we worked for was there to chew me out royally. "I don't give damn what you saw, you will never, ever divert again. Do you understand?" I paused and replied, "But Colonel, I though we were all on the same side." He turned beet red, dis an about face and left the briefing room.

Basic Training during grenades the go-no go certification. There was a "foreign exchange" soldier from I believe Nigeria. I believe there was some sort of language barrier or something, but he must not have captured what "cooking" a grenade was. Well, he cooked it in his hand and as he threw the simulation grenade. It exploded just after leaving his hand. It left his hand full of soot.

I was stationed at Mt Home AFB in Mt Home Idaho. Worked evening shift and that is when most of the maintenance and engine runs are done. On this particular evening we had to change an engine on the F-111 I was in charge of. We had to tow the aircraft to the end of runway to do all the necessary ops checks. We were on our way back and I was driving the tug and a security police pulled me over. I asked him what the problem is he told me the speed limit is 20 MPH. I asked him (are you serious) this tug has a max speed of 15 MPH. he really got angry when I told him to go bother someone else, we have work to do. He lit me up chewing me out until the NCO that did the engine run informed him to STOP, and told him I was right. Wow.

I was a QA with the Defense Contract Management Agency in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait in 2004. We traveled and lived with the troops to inspect defense contractor projects, and were a uniform, with a patch that ID'd us as DoD Civilians.
A young USN ensign and I were walking towards a new construction project when we crossed passed with an Army LtCol. Caught up in our conversation the ensign failed to solute him.
The LtCol. barked at us to stop, he quickly noticed my DoD Civilian patch, but then let into the young ensign loudly and eloquently. It was nothing if not poetic and grammatically pure, no 4 letter words or slurs or belittling, only reminding the young ensign of his duties and responsibilities as an officer.
When finished the ensign gave a crisp solute and we were dismissed by the LtCol. It was then that we noticed the cross on his lapel signifying that he was a chaplain.
For the rest of our walk and at chow latter on the ensign kept begging me not to mentioned to anyone that he was chewed out by a chaplain.
The secret did not last long for the eloquent chaplain was the priest at mass next Sunday. On our way out of mass, the LtCol. did not forget the young ensign and waited for his solute as we exited.
Now it is the custom for the Navy not to solute indoors. I gave up the secret when I busted up laughing as the young ensign stuttered his explanation to the chaplain about why he wasn't saluting him this time.

1968, US Naval Fire Fighting School, San Diego CA. During a fire fighting exercise, passing through smoke filled quarters without a mask. My friend SR Loren Meeker exited the building and begin having an epilepsy seizure. He fell to the ground. The drill master ordered him to stand up but he couldn't. As I searched for a bite stick for SR Meeker, the drill master started kicking Meeker and kicked him in the head. Some of us who knew of SR Meeker's condition yelled for the drill master to stop. I shoved the bite stick in Meeker's mouth and helped him to his feet. A couple of us helped him back to his barracks for rest. As far as I know the drill master was not reported. After all, we were simply Seaman Recruits at the time. Sad.

My first day aboard USS Luce DLG-7 out of Mayport, Florida (January 1, 1975) -- Instructed by LTjg Jack Ruth, Fire Control Officer, to get 5 gallons of fresh water from the boiler room, for the purpose of making coffee. Proceeded below decks to get same, and a boiler tech directed me to fill my jug from "that valve over there"... When I completed my task, I returned to the radar room and brewed the coffee. I was so proud. Much to my surprise, I was "chewed out" for the terrible tasting brew. Then everyone broke out in laughter, for I had brewed 100 cups of saltwater coffee. The joke was on me!

I got chewed out indirectly by my XO at morning muster in front of everyone. He stated his displeasure of the statement I wrote on the front page of the Coast Guard Commandants Bulletin. I was called into his office and he asked if I wanted to go to the brig for destruction of government property. Needless to say I answered, “no sir!” I never thought of myself as government property. After spending 4 years and 3 months and 14 days as a radar/operations specialist, finishing up my active duty in the US Navy, I was due to be discharged January 5,1973. Our ship, The USS Power (DD 839) was deployed on a "Med" cruise December 1, 1972. We were informed that we had a very important Captain's inspection on December 31. Since I was a "Short Timer" I decided that I had a brand-new dress white uniform tucked away in my locker that would be perfect for the inspection. The brand-new uniform had been in that locker for over a year, and I knew it would pass with my spit shined shoes and new white hat! On the day of inspection, I put it on and walked out into the sunlight feeling very confident. When I stood next to the rest of the guys, my uniform had turned a very dull yellow from sitting in my locker for so long! I stood out like a sore thumb. It was too late to change, as Operations was first to be inspected. It was my most "dressed down", "chewed out" moment in my Navy career, and I paid for it dearly! I still vividly remember this after almost 50 years!

Set the Scene: Araxos AB, Greece, a remote assignment, in the dead of winter, wind blowing off the Ionian Sea, midnight shift, custodial agents (Security Police) guarding igloos in a weapon storage area, freezing cold, no appropriate cold weather gear issued that even came close to keeping the guards semi-warm. I am working as the security controller and am a brand-new E-5 with almost 4 years in the service. A buck sergeant walks into the office for his 15-minute thaw-out break. He is wearing a watch cap that is unfortunately the wrong color - navy blue when it should have been black (or vice-versa). The flight chief, a 15-year E-5, begins to chew the sergeant out for wearing the wrong color watch-cap; he threatens the sergeant with a non-judicial punishment (Article 15) if he ever wears the cap again. Using my vast knowledge and experience in leadership, I suggest to the flight chief that it really doesn't matter what color the cap is as he will have his regular hat on when it gets light outside. and that the sergeant was only trying to keep warm. I tell him that he has no tact, diplomacy, nor does he work well with others. I get chewed out on my next performance report because I stood up for a cold security policeman.

I really felt sorry for him as he was over weight and I know the drill sgt was just picking on him because of that. He was made to go in and dry shave again.. This story is about myself instead of someone else. I was in boot camp at Parris Island and we were cleaning our M-16's and some us needed to go to the head but we wasn't sure how Sergeant Benson would react if we would YELL OUT. Sir recruit Cross requests permission to speak to Sergeant Beason!! Then, if he chose to answer and say "WHAT OR SPIT IT OUT" or just ignore you. So, one recruit couldn't hold it any longer and he YELLED OUT, cause you know EVERYTHING YOU SAY YOU HAVE TO YELL AND ASK PERMISSION to speak and then ask. IF they are in the mood to answer. So, the first recruit asked and got permission to speak and ask permission to make a head call and to EVERYBODY'S surprise Sergeant Benson said yes to both questions. Then, the second recruit asked and sure enough got permission to speak and make a head call. I waited a few minutes after the second recruit and I thought, Sergeant Benson must be in a good mood. I took my shot and YELLED RECRUIT CROSS REQUEST PERMISSION TO SPEAK TO DRILL INSTRUCTOR SERGEANT BENSON and Sergeant Benson replied "WHAT DO YOU WANT CROSS". I could tell by the way he answered me it wasn't going to go as smooth as the first two. I YELLED OUT RECRUIT CROSS REQUEST TO MAKE A HEAD CALL, Sergeant Benson waited a few seconds and said "GO CROSS BUT WHEN YOU GET DONE STOP ON MY QUARTER DECK!! Well, if you are a Marine you know exactly what that is and it's NO PLACE ANY RECRUIT WANTS TO GET PUT ON. If you're not a Marine ask one about it and they will explain. So, I go to the head and I kind of took a little bit of time cause I knew what was coming. I come out of the head and YELLED RECRUIT CROSS REPORTING TO THE QUARTER DECK. AFTER THAT VERY SECOND Sergeant Benson started in on me and I ended up being on the quarter deck FOR A SOLID AND EXHAUSTING 56 MINUTES!!! I was soaked with sweat and wore OUT. The night before graduation they took us to watch a movie with the other three platoons. Before the movie started different Sergeants would get up front and ask who did this and that the fastest, slowest, or the longest. So, one of the Sergeants from a different platoon ask "Who was on our quarter deck the longest". Sergeant Benson said my recruit got that one and everybody in my platoon started pointing and saying "recruit Cross, recruit Cross. When I was on the quarter deck that day everybody in my platoon had a front row seat , cause everybody was lined up down the squad bay sitting on their foot lockers cleaning their rifles. Anyway, another Sergeant tells Sergeant Benson that his recruit may have me beat. Now remember this is not a good thing, to be known for the recruit that was on the quarter deck the longest. Recruits in my platoon starting yelling recruit Cross was on there at least 56 minutes. I had no idea how long it was nor did I know my buddies had timed it. The Sergeant from the other platoon asked his platoon how long a recruit was on their quarter deck and they said 38 minutes. That clearing made me the unfortunate winner of being tortured the longest. One thing is for sure I will remember EVERY MINUTE for the rest of my life. I also, wouldn't trade those experiences we ALL had during especially boot camp. The U.S.M.C. HAS DIFFICULTY THE LONGEST AND THE HARDEST BOOT CAMP OUT ALL THE BRANCHES OF SERVICE. EXCEPT FOR THE SPECIAL FORCES CAMPS, I'M SURE THEY WERE HARDER, BUT THOSE GUYS ARE KIND OF NUTS ANYWAY!! LOVE YOU GUYS ANYWAY AND LOVE YA TO ALL THE DEVIL DOGS OUT THERE THAT KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. Thanks, for a chance to go down memory lane.

While serving with A Co, 159th ASH, 101st in 1977 I was chewed out by my platoon leader, a captain with 500 hours total time, for performing too thorough a pre-flight on the CH-47 aircraft I was the aircraft commander of. At the time I had 2500 hours of total time and 1500 in a CH-47. I recommended he learn to pre-flight as the aircraft wanted to kill him if given the opportunity. I submitted my paperwork and left the service on the w-3 promotion list a few months later.

I will as a new 2LT stationed in Wildflecken, FRG in 1978. I ran into the Battalion Executive Officer on my tactical site as I was duty officer. He told me that the Battalion Commander wanted to see the Battery Commander ASAP. I said absolutely sir, so I ran down to the orderly room. I saw the Battery Commander in the hallway talking to another Captain. Being a good Lieutenant I did not want to interrupt, so I just stood there. I stayed there about 30 seconds before the Battery Commander turned around and said this is a private conversation, get your butt out of here. I said yes sir, and moved out sharply out of the orderly room. I walked about 50 steps and ran into the Executive Officer again. He said did you relay the message I gave you, I told him no sir. I said sir, I was standing there trying to wait for the Battery Commander to recognize me and he thought I was eaves dropping on his conversation and told me to get the heck out of Dodge. Is that what he said, no sir, he used some expletives but I don't want to repeat it here. Okay you're dismissed, I'll go and get the Battery Commander myself. About 30 minutes I heard over the intercom system to report to the Battery Commander's office.
Once there, he proceed to jump me from one side out the other. He said, why didn't you tell me that the old man wanted to see me. I told him because you told me to get the heck out of Dodge and that's exactly what I did. I headed for Dodge.

I was in boot camp. I had just finished my 12-4am watch and was very tired. So my bunkmate and I did our bed together as required. Then we went to chow. When we returned to the barracks my CC announced an inspection and asked us to form the line. Everything was going well until they got to our bed. My CC started screaming because the catch edge of the sheet was showing when the sheet was turned down. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I ever heard so I started laughing. Then my CC took the whole bunk and flipped it over. The bed broke and screws went everywhere. That was it. I laughed so hard I broke the line. My CC started yelling at me and put me in pushup position. He kept yelling about following orders and stuff. I was still laughing even after doing 25 or more push ups. Then he sent me to intensive training for 1 week. Now every time I do my bed, I make sure my catch edge isn't showing when I turn the sheet down.

Entering the final weeks of basic training, we were given a Sunday afternoon off for R&R. That did not mean we could leave the base, so a group of us decided to use one of the swimming pools available to recruits. Not having been allowed outside without our pith helmets on and our hair cut nearly clean, I soon had a sunburn on my head, complete with blisters. This made my head far too tender to don my helmet. My drill sergeant bawled me out in front of the entire flight for what seemed an hour and threatened me with an article 15. The charge was "the destruction of government property."

Mine is about me kind of getting chewed out , I did 3 years active duty in the Army , From 1/1982 till 1/1985 . Did my full 3 years . No big deal , But Six months after I got a letter from the Army , Well The letter was telling me I was promoted to E-5 Sergeant ( I got as a E-4 Specialist ) I started to call myself a " Mail Order Sgt ) I called one of my older brothers who was still in the Army at the time , told him , he never hear of that happening I should call St Louis (IRR : Inactive Ready Reserve ** Back in that time period You could ask to go to keep Your MOS Skills up today back then ) Well I called them I talked to some Sgt and told her what I got and is it real . She never her of it She is going to have to look into it and well get back to me what she finds out . Well a week or to later I get a call from some Sgt Major . He starts chewing me out . Saying Why am I questing a promotion I should be grateful goes on and on ( I stop listening after that ) I just kept saying " YES SIR , I UNDERSTAND SIR . When on for about 4 more minutes . So I am a real Mail Ordered Buck Sgt

Evil Echo Empire makes some of the toughest Devil Dogs the Core has to offer. In doing so the requirements of the recruits is enforced regularly especially for those going a-stray. We are forbidden of all poggie bait that surfaces itself in the squadbay via unopened MRE's or carepackages sent from loved ones and must trash it. One recruit has had a bright idea to hide a package of Oreos in the layer under the trash bag into the head trash can. After Taps the recruit takes first shift firewatch and rovers on into the head to smack down some cookies with cream in the middle. Little does this foolish recruit know because tonight our revival platoon's Senior Drill instructor decides to give us a hard time on firewatch and test our knowledge when all of a sudden he darted into the head, I don't know if he hurd the crunching, could smell it or just felt the fear. Loud roaring questions of what's he eating and to get it out filled our whole bay waking everyone up. Everyone hears crying studders come from the recruit while he musters up the confidence to open his mouth to say, "P-P-P-P-P-A-P-E-R SIR!" *cries* "THIS RECUIT IS EATIN PAPER SIR!". By this time our unsupervised squad bay is now filled with our drill instructor as well as other instructors from other platoons screaming at him that, "THATS NOT PAPER ITS OREOS!" and "YOUR DIDNT DRAW ON THE PAPER AND EAT IT WHY IS IT BLACK!" (this same recruit was sexually assaulted by another recruit because this dishonably discharge marine did jump-n-jacks in the middle of the shower with all of us in there on his own accord)

I once tasked an E4 who worked for me to strip & wax a passageway as it needed attention and there were performance issues requiring EMI. As he undertook the task, our LT came out of the office and slipped on the messy stripper/wax mixture. (None of this was known to me until later).

I was summoned to the office to find the LT and LPO waiting. The LT was rambling and visibly upset.

As the LT began discussing the safety issues surrounding the tasking, the discussion kept going as it appeared that I was not taking the "seriousness" of the issue to heart. I am positive my face showed a blatant disdain to the situation. The discussion of the cost to clean the Khaki uniform and the polish/scrapes on the LT's boots were also brought to my attention as well as the danger of injury to personnel.

I stood there the entire time patiently waiting for the LT to take a breath and allow me to respond. I noticed that the "Wet Floor" sign was still on the door and the "Wet Floor" a-frame sign was still in the doorway. My PO quietly entered the room and placed the ship SOP and also the Safety Department handout stating the best procedures for the task. All of the steps had been followed and the LPO had even been informed hours earlier.

Once I was given an opportunity to respond, I simply handed the 2 pages to the LT and snapped back to parade rest without saying a word. In less than a minute, the LT just spun & walked away without a word. I looked at the LPO who immediately stated "Yea, I never had a chance to speak either".

A few days later I noticed a sign where the passageway had been acknowledged as being Outstanding during a random spot inspection. Typically, when we receive that recognition, a 4-hour liberty is given to the personnel that performed the task as well as the leaders involved. We never got the liberty, nor did we ever ask about it...

Back in basic training, I was chewed out for not wearing my BC. I was thinking to myself are you kidding me. Hey Private where are you BC. I told the DS they were in my wall locker. He told me Uncle Sam issued them to me so I should be wearing them. I had to get in the rest position of a push up and just hold it. Are you kidding me? Over some ugly BC. I didn’t like him the whole cycle I was in training. So everyday he made it his business to make sure I had them things on. That was the worst experience I encountered.

I was the one chewed out! As a kid, I made some extra cash by teaching myself how to repair outboard motors. Naturally, I became pretty good at it and while serving at the Castle Hill Search And Rescue Station in Newport, RI during the late '70's was tagged as the the outboard guy. One day, the group leader (a PO who will go unnamed) commanded me to fill a fist-sized hole in the "leg" of engine with Bondo (automotive body putty). Having repaired hundreds of outboards, I took issue with the "order" from someone who clearly had little skill in this area. Oops! The next thing I know, I'm called on the carpet and the CO is in my face threatening me with insubordination and a dishonorable discharge. My desire to be a lifer died on that day.

Smiling in the mess hall. The drill sergeant walked over and said you come in here to eat not smile. There was 4 of us sitting at the table. So needless to say there was a punishment. The entire platoon had to do calisthenics except of course the ones smiling. We had to watch as our punishment so the rest could get angry at us. I forgot to mention it was raining. We didn't see the logic because we were suppose to be the one punished, but oh well we kept smiling.

In boot camp Nick Kavick had to shave at least 3 times a day. Nick could grow a handle bar stash in 4 days. He had to shave his chest so the hair wouldnt stick out of the neck of his T shirt, Gunny would chew on him all the time. MCB 133

The absolute most ridiculous event which occurred in 1986 during basic training at Fort Knox Kentucky, when we marched over to AAFES to shop for necessary items. The drill sergeants stealthily watched a young recruit buy a Snickers candy bar. After marching back to barracks we were vociferously interrogated to discover who purchased the item. We had to dump our purchases in the training area as if they were trying to find a thief. As punishment we got extra physical training for an hour.

I worked for the KCVA Medical center I worked graveyard shift I came in on my tour duty midnight to noon 12hours the VA police came on my floor and went off on me about my parking which the person that was parked next to me had parked crookit so by the time of morning the VA police came on my floor went off on stating I parked crookit my Supervisor was a witness and he explained that I worked graveyard shift.

I was in Warrant Officer Flight school and three fellow cadets came and asked me how I was able to handle the pressures and stress of training. I told them that they had two choices, "Either play the game or join the team". They soon told the Tack Officers what I said and the next thing I know, I am up against the "Wall" at attention , while three Tack officers screamed at me for over an Hour. Ironically, none of those three made it through flight school. I graduated and went on to Cobra School. and then off to Vietnam. Learning to handle the stress yet continuing to to advance, succeed, and do your jobs was a major part of our training.

Viet Nam, 1970, FOL Phuc Vin: A new first shirt, fresh from stateside, stopped a patrol just coming in from the bush and dressed them all down for being covered (head to toe) in red mud and red dust. Two days later the first shirt went into his hooch, sat on his bunk and promptly dissapeared entirely. Someone had gone into his hooch and lined the walls with claymore and put the clickers in his bed springs. This kind of thing isnt talked about very much. But it's not a good idea to yell in essantly at a group of combat soldiers fresh in from the bush.

I shouted out, "Who's the bitch who used the urinal and didn't clean up?" I had urinal clean-up for the rest of the time there! Another one was someone called my name, without looking, I yelled, "What!" not realizing it was my DI, who put me down for about 1,000 - he kept track!

Probably the time one of my platoon buddies was chewed out for smiling. He was smiling to keep from yelling, out of frustration with the drill Sargent pushing him around. The more the Sargent yelled the more the guy smiled. It was funny to the rest of us because the Sargent was so red in the face from shouting we thought he, the Sargent, was going to pass out. To the rest of us, this outburst was over the top for someone who smiled.

While doing mourning calisthenics, the airman next to me got caught picking his nose. With that discovery by the Sgt. leading the calisthenics, he got in the airman's face, and loudly asked what the airman was doing. After several asks the airman in a low voice replied, I'm picking my nose sir. That low voice reply did not satisfy the Sgt. So loudly the Sgt. asked again, what are you doing? Again the airman replied a little louder, I'm picking my nose sir. Still not satisfied the entire group of airmen did not hear the reply, at the top of his lungs the Sgt. said, airman I can't hear you. The airman then replied in a extremely loud voice I"M PICKING MY NOSE SIR. The Sgt. satisfied all had heard the airman's reply, ask the airman, WHAT DOES THAT MAKE YOU AIRMAN? The airman replied in his extremely loud voice I'M A NOSE PICKER SIR. And thus a new Air Force Specialty was created. As a side note the airman towered over the Sgt.

Not military related, but just home from serving my second enlistment in the Marines. We live in rural Red Wing and raised on a farm. One day my older sister called me and asked if I would go to the school with her to pick up my niece. Naturally time with my sister and my handicapped niece with MS, so without a moment of thought I accepted. My assumption being that my niece was possibly sick so needed to come home. I was invited by my sister because she wanted me to be there to hear what my niece was going home for. She left me to see and hear this for myself. She was absolutely furious with the school. When we arrived, my niece was in the principals' office and there she sat crying. Now I'm pissed off. When she stood up her T shirt was on inside out. I quietly told her to go to the restroom and fix her T shirt. She held onto me and just pointed to the principal. My sister God Bless her, was standing arms crossed and that glare on her face of a pissed off drill instructor looking at the principal. When I asked what seems to be the issue here and why is my niece wearing her T shirt inside out. The principal went on to explain that she was taken out of the cafeteria and with everyone watching marched her through and straight to the principals' office. There she was told to go take her T shirt off and turn it inside out. "It's to deplorable to even look at."
Just about now I'm ready to climb over that desk and give some lessons on humility and respect!!
The principal went on to give us a lecture on how totally unacceptable and offensive it is to allow a youth to wear clothing of such a nature. My niece just back from the restroom, stood beside me as the principal still jabbering on about her T shirt. When I seen her shirt I was shell shocked. Totally blindsided by what was still coming. Man the gates of hell opened when my sister started to unleash on the principal and I couldn't help but jump in too because of the confusion they caused for my poor niece who was as I feel a victim in a world full of idiots. This entire ordeal started because one woman teacher was offended by my nieces T shirt. In the end the principal said she felt that my sister should have been taken to court for allowing a challenged young girl to wear such trash in public. I must be honest now I'm in stitches. I was laughing so hard it was an incredible show of ignorance at it's finest. My poor niece was subjected to this and my sister put in a dim light all because of one offended teacher (though the school says many many offended staff and students) resulting in a three day suspension from school because of my failure to "take this seriously". Her sexual statement on her T shirt was an ad by the local Creamery. We've most of us seen a similar shirt at one time or another mostly at County Fairs even the Minnesota State Fair.

I was stationed in K-Bay with Alpha Co. 1st battalion 3rd Marines. My platoon just got back from the field and into Garrison, so you can imagine how dirty we were, and all we are thinking about is chow. Some of us go to the chow hall and not even five minutes into stuffing our faces with the best buffet the military has to offer, a runner comes in looking for us brings word that battalion formation in Now!! We leave and make it seconds before the Sgt.Major shows up, we fall way in the back and just as we are getting into are best parade rest, a short camouflage figure comes out of the barracks behind us. Out of my left peripheral I see how this figure pulls my A- gunner from his camis bottoms and starts Chewing him out! " Hey Marine why the f**k is your uniform torn and f**king dirty!, This is not to uniform standard!" In my mind I was does this Ass***e knows we just got back from the field and have not got a chance to shower or change, who is this? And of course it was our new company 1st Sgt. Who during the whole field op, his punk ass stayed back on base the whole month doing "admin" stuff. Their was no reasoning with him that day or any day for that matter. However it makes my heart warm knowing that he fell out out of every hike we did, life will even itself out. Semper Fi!!

Basic training at Lackland AFB we were called from the barracks to fall out in front of front doors. As we left the barracks the TI was standing on the deck watching. All of a sudden the TI screamed out one of the airman's names at the top of his voice. When the airman turned around to face the TI we all saw his canteen on upside down and dripping water down his fatigue pants. The TI reprimanded him for 10 minutes (seemed longer). We all received laps for his mistake. THe poor guy had other problems and was set back.

A couple of us were sent for training. One soldier's wife packed one summer boot and a winter boot, not knowing it was 2 different boots. So the soldier had to wear 2 different boots to formation. Someone pointed it out and it was hilarious.

During Air Force basic training in 1974 while in the chow line I was about to get a soda from the dispenser. I got a glass that had just come out of the dishwasher, it was steaming hot. I proceeded to put my clean glass into the ice tray and spun it to give it a brief cool down before filling. A DI saw me do this and proceeded to order me to stand at the filled DI table while at attention he chewed my ass out for my actions. He then ordered a 351 demerit card from me. We are allowed only a few 351's and if you run out they can set you back to day one. I never did that again.

As a Drill Instructor at MCRD San Diego, my Senior Drill Instructor chewed this recruit out because he could not and would close his mouth while at the position of attention. No matter how this recruit tried to point of crying, he could not close his mouth. So when we went out to practice drill movements and for our final drill contest, this recruit was made the barracks firewatch/gear guard.

While serving as a grunt in RVN, our travels into the woods happened all the time. Each travel required a "pace" man, someone to count the paces. All the maps were a solid green so no landmarks were visible, but they were on the ground. One one occasion, our pace man had lost count and we were totally lost. Our LT, chewed out for his error. Truth was he didn't have a clue where we were either.

My buddy and fellow Navy Photographer's Mate was told to go to the flight line and shoot the first F14 Tomcat coming to the west coast. He went out and took some great shots of the landing. Returning to the Photo Lab he was asked why he wasn't at the flight line. He proudly stated he got the shots and was ready to develop them. He was then told that a second Tomcat had just landed and he should have been there to get those shots too. He was chewed out, written up, lost a stripe, fined, and got extra duty. My heart went out to the guy. His spirit was crushed and he was never the same.

In basic training, I got sick and had to spend 2 days in the infirmary where I had no access to my personal items. When I was released, I went directly to a barracks meeting the DI was holding. When he saw me, he asked why I wasn't shaved. After I told him why, he proceeded to chew me out with extreme sternness, saying "shave every d..m day" several different ways so I wouldn't forget it. I haven't forgotten it to this day almost 5 decades later. But lately I disregard it out of defiance.

Early 1969, working as a machine gunner on a gunship of the 116th AHC supporting a battalion operation of the 82nd Airborne, we discovered a four man team of Americans hiding in a woodlot--typical sniper team--shooter, radio man, spotter, automatcic weapon man. Our aircraft commander radioed our C&C bird that we had Americans in the woodlot and he was given the Order from the 82nd Col in the c&c bird to kill them as they had no sniper teams in this Area. Pilot refused and had me shoot a short burst next to them and wave them to leave the woods. They were picked up by a slick and taken away.

When we returned to cu chi that evening our Battalion commanders jeep was waiting for my AC. He was taken to Bn HQ and threatened with a Court Marshall for failing to obey the 82nd BN Col order to kill the 4 Americans---who I would have had to kill as the machine gunner/crew chief.

EVERY officer thought he deserved to be punished; EVERY EM thought he did the right thing. I mention this episode in my book, Xin Loi, viet Nam.

In 1968, Da Nang VN, Deep Water Piers. We were off-loading a US Army M-60 tank. I was on the pier with a support line tied to the tank as it was being lowered to the pier. I looked up to make sure we were guiding the tank for a safe landing on the pier. When I looked up, my hard-hat fell off my head. At that moment, the Master Chief came running up the pier screaming at me, "Get out from under that tank with out a hard-hat on your head." DUH. Chief, if that tank fell on me, it wouldn't have mattered whether I was wearing 1 or 27 hard-hats. I never did figure out what point he was trying to make.

My army troop was 2 pounds overweight and was one week away from a surgery to remove a 5 pound tumor which was making her sick. Commander insisted army troop exercise and get within standards before surgery.

Our DI found a wooly bugger under a new recruits bed. The DI asked how it got there. The recruit told the DI he didn't know. The DI asked if he invited it into the barracks. The recruit replied no. The DI asked if it should be in the barracks? The recruit replied no. At this point the DI asked what they should do about it. After a short pause the DI told the recruit he wanted him to march the wooly booger out of the barracks. The recruit picked up the wooly booger and headed for the door. The DI called him back. The DI asked what he was doing. The recruit said the was removing the wooly booger. The DI replied that he said to march it from the building. The recruit got on his hands and knees and began to march the wooly booger out of the building. He would shout hut 2..3..and then blow the wooly booger a few inches. He continued this march down the hall and then the stairs and out the front door.

Got chewed out this past week for not knowing what our Chief of Staff (CoS) and Department Head decided during their private meetings. The CoS complained that it took up his time, having to explain senior decisions to workers. Apparently we're supposed to know about their decisions, or process changes, without anyone him having to announce or explain them to us. I promised to do better in the future.

I was a young (PFC) Marine aircrewman in a CH-46 that was transporting wounded on stretchers to Danang to be taken out of country. The ramp on our CH-46 Sea Knight was removed to reducer aircraft weight to increase lift capability. A serviceman was in distress as he was on a stretcher near the edge at the rear of the helicopter in flight. I immediately disconnected my microphone and went to his aid to pull him further back into the aircraft. Upon my return I was chewed out by the pilot (who wasn't interested in my explanation) for not communicating first. I know there are reasons why I should have followed protocol. Fifty-five years later upon reflection I'm still glad I was able immediately comfort a young hero.

While getting off the transport truck for the trading barracks one of the recruits drops his duffel bag. The DI jumps him and tells him to “bet your face” of course that means do push ups. The most ridiculous "chew out" came from a SFC FARMER, who proceeded to rip the young man to pieces, while on duty at the DMZ in Korea because the unfortunate soldier always "Parted his hair down the middle". There we were at a place where lifting your head above fox hole level was akin to Russian Roulette and this NCO was actually turning a shade of red that would be new to any artist pallett, physically shaking as though he had just seen McArthur's ghost, and drawing unsolicited fire from the North. All because this very green, baby faced young man, parted his hair in the middle. The NCO actually made the Private see the Medic to confirm the growth patterns of the Privates scalp.
Guys, I couldnt make this up if I wanted too.

It was week 1 of Bootcamp training in Great Lakes, and our RDC's barely knew us. We were all sleep deprived and asking ourselves, "What in the hell did I just sign up for!?", type phase. One redheaded recruit from New York gets called out, doesn't know port from starboard, and the RDC yells directly in his face, " I cant even tell who you're looking at...me or him?" (RDC points over his shoulder to me as I was adjacent from this experience) I could not for the life of me hold in my laughter, and was punished further later. But the reason this was hilariously ridiculous was that the redheaded recruit from New York was very cross-eyed, and this was before we even got our BCG's lol.

After reporting to the BAS late for work, NJP got me a week of restriction. As a young married PO3 my wife worked at a civilian job. When she had to work on a Saturday she brought our daughter to me as we were strapped for cash. A runner told me that the duty Sargent wanted to see me, I got there and he started yelling about me having a girl in my room. When he stopped for a breath I told him to get his temper under control (we were both the same rank), and yes I had a girl in my room. She is my eight year old daughter. If he wanted to continue with this he could put me on charges. He declined and said that the reports he got didn't contain the daughter detail.

I once got chewed out for wearing a boonie cap. Not because I was wearing the boonie, but because I was wearing a boonie cap that MATCHED my uniform.

Iraq, 2003. We were issued DCUs, to include boonies, but due to shortage, I only got two sets. I took two pairs of BDUs to round out my full packing list, per guidance from Division. Fast forward 5 months into deployment...

We had a local national contractor for washing clothes. I turned my one set of DCUs in in the morning. Later that morning, while fueling a generator, the nozzle comes off, and I am soaked in diesel. So I change out of my other pair of DCUs, and put on my back-up BDUs. There were enough of us that only had two sets (and a couple that only had 1) that BDUs weren't common, but they weren't all that rare, either. I toss on my woodland camo boonie, because, BDUs, duh!

AS I walk toward the TOC for my shift, BDE S3 SGM stops me and starts chewing me out for being out of uniform. I was thinking a big WTF to myself, because he didn't say WHAT was wrong, just kept yelling about "unauthorized uniform.". I thought he meant the BDUs. So I explained that I only had two DCUs, and after turning one in that morning, I had spilled diesel on the second, so I had to switch to BDUs.

THEN SGM finally says what is wrong. He doesn't care about the BDUs, why am I wearing a boonie cap? I am now even more perplexed... boonie cap was the DIRECTED headgear when not wearing a helmet... and SGM was wearing a boonie cap while chewing me out.

So I ask the SGM what headgear I should be wearing, and he says I should be wearing the DCU boonie cap. Again, confused, I ask why I should wear the DCU boonie cap when I have a matching BDU boonie cap.

SGM thinks he has me now! He says, because the DCU boonie cap was issued gear, the BDU boonie cap was not. But SGM, says I, the BDU boonie cap WAS issued to me, by the Army.

So then SGM starts hootin and hollering about my integrity and how he knew no one in this unit had been issued a woodland boonie for this deployment because he personally reviewed the uniform request.

Roger, SGM. I was issued it at my last unit. So then he chewed my ass because I was wearing uniform not issued by *this* unit.

At that point I stopped. Pointing out that my BDUs, boots, t-shirts, socks, belt, drawers, and even my ear plug case (which was part of the uniform) weren't issued by that unit, either would have been pointless.

But, yeah, that's the saga of being chewed out for having the temerity of wearing issued gear that MATCHED, rather than DCU boonie with BDUs.

I believe it was the second week of Navy boot camp and the company commander of Company 257 had called for a 'sea bag inspection' where all of our navy clothing was to be laid out on our bunks, Dress Right Dress. This was our first bag inspection and several of my barracks-mates had made mistakes and the CC would destroy their layout and command them to do it again. As the CC moved on down the line of bunks the sailor in question would hurriedly start folding and smoothing his clothing.
When he came to my bunk, my bunk mate and I stood stiffly at attention, hoping the CC would just silently move on. He stopped at the foot of our bunk and looked at the bucket tied on the top rail. The bucket contained our two pairs of flip-flop shower shoes and two brushes for scrubbing our clothes.
He pulled my shower shoes out of the bucket and yelled, "Who's @#$% shower shoes are these?" I responded as we had been taught, "Sir, mine, sir." "And what is your name boy?" "Sir, Smith, MS, seaman recruit Company 257, sir."
The shower shoes were supposed to be put together in the bucket toe-to-toe and I had put them together heel-to-toe. Now the CC's face is just inches from my face, "God dammit Smith, I sure hope you are wrong because if you are right there are 99 other sons of bitches here that are wrong! Now why did you do this?"
"Sir, it made sense to do it that way, sir."
This answer didn't sit well with him at all and he went on about 'the right way, the wrong way and the Navy way and how I was just a dumb God damned recruit, not paid to think. He went on and on. My mind was getting numb and I was thinking that never in my life had anyone spoken to me this way over such a trivial thing.
As he moved on my heart was beating so hard and sweat was running down my ribs. At that minute I decided that from then on I would not be the best seaman recruit or the worst. Mr. Myles would forget that I existed.

Was early summer 2230 hours in long beach California was assigned to hospital ship Haven ( as a patient but that's another story how / why ). Just completed having 38 stitches and jaw / mouth wired closed sent to medical ward and " put to bed " ... awoke next morning disorientated and thirsty as a camel in the desert ... foundered over to the drinking fountain .. commenced to quench my thirst when I was " attacked / assaulted / screamed upon by 4 corpsmen and one nurse officer for using the drinking fountain ... reason ?... Capitan's inspection in ten minutes ... 1/2 hour later the " Capitan " walked in one door ... Gazed around and five feet later out the other while I stood at attention still dry as that same damn camel ...

I was stationed at a Joint Command that had all branches of service. I broke a nail really bad and was bleeding. I borrowed a nail clipper from the desk next to me and he laughed as I sat on the floor with my hands above the trash can. I was trying to make sure I didn't bleed on the floor and get the fingernail into the trash. I know how sometimes they can fly and with it bleeding. I thought that was nasty and rude. I also figured I might as well go ahead and cut them all off so it wouldn't happen again.
Well I got written up for "Conduct unbecoming a Petty Officer". My counseling chit stated that I needed to be in full uniform which means I would need to do my personal grooming at home. When I tried to explain that my nails were always in regulations but this was just because my finger was bleeding and I didn't want to try to cut the nail "outside" the trashcan, I was told I should have waited until I got home or went to medical. (shaking my head)

While going through boot camp at San Diego Navel base in the year of 1974 I was given the task of assisting another recruit with the mail run while we had to walk quiet a distance to retrieve the mail we chatted with one another to get to know each other. When we returned to the barracks we were both called into the company commander's office . Our company Commander asked us if we were talking on the grinder while we were going on the mail run and we both responded yes not at all thinking nothing of it and he completely went off on the both of us and precede to order the two of us to a rigorous Calisthenics workout. Still a mystery to this day why this was made into a big deal by our company commander.

A local policeman knocked on the car window and "arrested" me for drinking and driving. He mentioned that I could not drink and drive in my country. I then explained that drinking and driving involved alcohol. His reply was that drinking and driving was exactly that drinking and driving and had nothing to do with alcohol. Early in my Navy career I got chewed out for not having my locker licked during a barracks inspection. I happened to be in a single barracks room. I did not see the problem - the door was locked. I had the courage to address the issue with the Command Master Chief - who oversaw barracks inspections. He told me the purpose was to train you, to prepare you for sea duty. The CMC did not like my response when I asked him, "So who is training the married sailors who live in town or in married housing?" That earned me a few minutes of harsh language - and a reinspection on a Saturday morning.

In basic training at Fort Ord CA. I was caught drinking a can of coke and had to low crawl up and down the company area making several laps. Another incident that happened at Pioneer Kansern in Hanau, West Germany. At the time I was a Spec. 4 with several months overseas duty. I was crossing the parade ground when I happened to passed an intoxicated E-7, whom stopped me for not having my breast pocket unbuttoned. He went on to tell me " better men than I had died in that uniform", as a draftee in 1969 and 1970, his action was a example of all the harassment (horse sit) that we had to put up with. 2006-2007 Balad Iraq:
I am sitting at my table during lunch, with my crew. Then some Army guy with no insignia, that looks like he just woke up outta bed while using his uniform as pajamas, this man hadn't shaved in about 3 days comes and sits at my table. I have always been pretty firm with my troops about looking the part you wish to be one day. So this man sits at my table and I get his name, he say Gary Sinise. I start into his ass about how he shouldn't have came to the chow hall looking like a bum and he should be ashamed. I drill this guy the whole time he is eating, probably about 5 total minutes. He sits there and takes it, not giving any real resistance in this conversation.
Then I get a hand on my shoulder, I look behind me and its the MWR and Services commander right behind me. They ask me how I am enjoying my meal, and I turn to them and state, it would be better if we trained our new troops how to dress for the day, and not use a deployment as an excuse to look like a bum. He looks at me and says, "Well, this man is Gary Sinise." I reply with something like, I don't care who he is. He is in the uniform he should wear it properly. He heavy sighs and states have you ever seen Forrest Gump or CSI. I reply with of course, then he looks at me like I'm a total retard, and says well he was the actor who plays Lt. Dan. Then it hit me. I looked at him and was like oh, so you're not even in the military, nevertheless you need to wear that uniform with pride. Gary Sinise replied back with something like, well I will ensure I wear this uniform with pride the next time I'm in it. Saw him a couple times afterwards with his DCU uniform perfectly pressed.
(My troops ragged me hard for the rest of this deployment for my lack of pop culture.)
My daughter met him in DC (2019 I think) and got to have a conversation with him for about 10ish minutes. My daughter asked him where all overseas did he go to visit the troops at. Gary Sinise, stated a several countries, when he was done she asked which bases in Iraq and years, bc her dad (me) was in Balad and Baghdad during 06-07. He stated he went to both, then she brought up this story she read in my deployment diary. He replied, "Yes, I believe you do look familiar to a guy who gave me one of the most humbling experiences of my life, and please tell your dad that I have never worn the uniform with even a string out of line since." Then gave her a little signed momento and said their goodbyes.

A PFC had a pencil behind his ear in a military classroom in the Ranger Indoctrination Program. He was yelled at, then taken outside and smoked to exhaustion. At one point he was running around his hand while it was planted on the ground in gravel. He returned to the classroom with a bloody palm and sweat pouring down his face.

When I was in boot camp at Fort Dix, after an evening meal, a trainee brought his metal tray to the used utensils area for cleaning and subsequent washing/disinfecting. A Corporal was watching the process form a short distance away. He came over to the trainee, noted less than a morsel of food that was about to be thrown into the waste can and ordered the trainee to eat the remainder of his meal. The trainee stated he was full and could eat no more. The trainee, apparently listening to his body rather than his superior, refused and proceeded to place his tray on the moving belt for transfer to the kitchen area. The Corporal became incensed at the trainee's refusal to follow an order and pulled him out of line. He chewed him out for his wastefulness, recorded his name, training unit and the name of his supervising Staff Sergeant and then ordered the trainee to a week of KP beginning that very night.

That trainee was me.

My uncle was in the Navy WW2. In basic training they were told that if they did good on the Saturday morning inspection that they would get to go on liberty. First liberty since he joined the Navy. They were all looking forward to a night on the town. The Company Commander came out in front of a company formation of over 150 men and said that there was not going to be any liberties given. Someone in the formation yelled out "Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death". Commander called them to attention and told them that they would stand attention until someone told him who said that. Again the same person yelled out Patrick Henry, sir. All the men died laughing which didn't help matters.

I was a new chaplain to the military and had just returned from a 4-month deployment when the Command Chaplain, a full-bird Colonel and Catholic priest, at that, called me barking, "Chaplain, what is this report that you were passing out condoms to all the Airmen at your base!?" I chuckled and replied, "Sir, how may I help you?" "I asked you what you were thinking passing out condoms to all your people? That's not our lane as Unit Ministry Teams!" I suppose he was one of those priests that didn't believe in birth control. Again, thinking he was pulling a joke on me, I chuckled and asked again, "Sir, how may I help you?" At this point, I suspect this full-bird, who held my career in his hands, was becoming fully irate when he bellowed, "I am holding a performance report of your chaplain assistant down range with a bullet that states, 'Compassionately distributed 1,430 condoms to 800 Airmen to encourage safety and well being.'" "Sir, I have no idea what you are referring to, but I can guarantee you I had no role in it. I didn't write that report. Let me get to the bottom of this." My chaplain assistant was from another base, and her NCOIC put her in for an award for her deployment. When I talked to the chaplain assistant, she replied, "Oh yes, sir, when you went out with the Commander to various dinners and engagements, I would walk around with the medical team and pass out condoms." I could have died. I spoke to her NCOIC and reminded her that the Command Chaplain was a Catholic priest and that he didn't find it funny that a Unit Ministry Team member was passing out condoms rather than Bibles. I don't think I ever convinced that full-bird chaplain I knew nothing about the condom ministry. A few months later I got orders to Korea.

I don’t know that it was ridiculous, but it was memorable. We had a female drill instructor officer I had been interacting with and saying “Yes Ma’am” to repeatedly. Ft. Hood in the fall of 1980 - I was still a Butter Bar and was the XO of the company. I had an old GLQ-3 jammer (mounted on an M-545 Gamma Goat) that was finally being replaced with a slightly upgraded model. The morning of the day the swap was to be made, I pulled the goat out of the line and into a large vacant area of the motor pool. I didn't know what sort of flatbed the newer rig would be on, or what hoist was being used - but I wanted to give them plenty of room. Unfortunately, just as I was positioning the goat in the vacant area, it broke down (as they were prone to do). The CO and I were the only two officers in the company, so I held every additional "special assignment" slot in the company - including Maintenance Officer.
I called over the appropriate techs and we started diagnosing the problem. We had just figured out the problem - and the fact that we didn't have the appropriate spare part - when the CO came storming over.
"WHY IS THIS RIG STILL HERE? WHY ISN'T IT DOWN AT THE RAILHEAD? HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO SWAP OUT THIS POS IF IT'S SITTING HERE IN THE MOTORPOOL? THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE HALF AN HOUR AGO!" The CO continued to chew me out (in front of my troops) calling me the dumbest piece of s... he'd ever met, etc.
After five minutes of being insulted with every vulgar name he could call me, he suddenly stopped in mid-sentence. His eyes shifted away from me slightly, so I turned around to see what he was staring at. A hoist and a flatbed carrying my "new" GLQ-3 drove up to our location and announced they were there to swap the huts. The CO just turned around and left.
Three days later when I was in my office (instead of the motor pool, where I usually lived), the CO walked in and dropped a letter into my inbox. Before I could pull it out, he turned and hurried out of the room. The letter was from five days before, stating that the equipment swaps (mine wasn't the only piece) were going to be done at the railhead instead of in each company's motor pool in order to save time. I never asked, but apparently, they saved enough time doing railhead swaps that they were willing to make a special trip for me.

I seen a promotable E-4 with less than 3 years of service take his rank off slam it on the desk of his Squad Leader (who was a 15 year plus non-promotable E-5), tell him "I have a few things to say to you." In Basic at San Antonio Lack-land AFB, during the time we were doing the "Laundry Stamp" in the day room, the D.I. walked up to a farm boy from upstate NY and saw he was putting the laundry mark on the wrong side of the underwear band. He got in his face and screamed "You farm boys don't know your left from your right?" at that point he had him put the underwear on his head with his nose out the dick hole and run up and down the walkway in front of the barracks flapping his arms yelling 'I'm captain America" and made us all laugh at him. A Fellow Private was stealing snackers candy bars by sticking his whole arm into a vending machine while on guard duty late one evening in basic training. He was caught red-handed by one of the drill sergeants at 2:00am and by 2:30am the duck walking started. The whole platoon paid for it by duck walking back in forth for an hour. Meanwhile the private that stole the snickers bars stood watching and crying while he ate a huge box of snickers bars. Needless to say, we gave the private a blanket party the next night and it was not pretty. And afterword everyone called him "Snickers" for the remainder of basic training. Thank you.

Any enlisted that have been C.Q. Runners or Staff Duty runners in old school infantry unit's.
At the start of the day the floors would need to be swept and mopped and the floor shied.
Long story short I was C.Q. Runner Sundy morning to monday. The C.Q. Sargeant being a hard ass wanted me buff the floors. no problem anther day as a joe. I was told that the C.O. liked his floors like class.
so with noting to do but clean for 24 hours. I striped the floors. then Put one coat of wax after another.
The floors where so shiny you could see a pretty good reflection of your self on them. ( Just out of basis at Ft.Benning. Ga.)
The next morning the C.O. comes in ,makes a comment about the floor being the best he had ever seen it.
Then he sliped on his ass and ripped me a new one.

In 1967, while walking in from the main gate at my new naval assignment, two Navy Chiefs pulled over in the car they were in and got out along the sidewalk I was on. They walked up to me and asked me what I was doing on base. I told them I was reporting in since the Augusta Naval Base was to be my last stateside assignment prior to my discharge in three months. I was coming in from Argentia Naval Air Base in Newfoundland, Canada. They then proceeded to chew me out for my improper grooming. They said who did I think I was walking on their base looking like I did with a full beard. They then told me I had to get in the car so they could take me to their Officer of the Day. Finally when I was allowed to speak, I pulled out the medical waiver I had and showed them that I had permission for the beard. Needless to say, they quietly got in their car and drove off, without apologizing I might add.

In Basic Training, I was chewed out by the TI during KP duty. He informed me (in that oh so polite way that TIs have with their loud volume) that the belt on my BDUs was facing the wrong way. After about 5min of a good public a$$ chewing, he was finished. As I stood at attention and requested permission to speak, I informed him that according to AFI 36-2903 paragraph blah blah blah, women can wear the BDU belt with the tip facing to the left OR the right. AUGUST 1985. Camp Lejeune, NC training area. Battalion mechanized infantry night attack exercise. Moonless pitch dark conditions. The new battalion commander was 200 meters away from a blank-fire engagement where Lima 3/2 was training. The battalion commander could see the fight, but communications were “down”. He calls up the Communications Platoon Commander. The Bn CO was wearing those AN/PVG-5a “Ghost Buster” style NVGs. I was the Bn Air Officer and was wearing the same NVG set. NVG sets were so scarce that only drivers and element commanders were issued a set. I had a pair “practically by accident”, and was standing in the dark about 20 feet from the Battalion Commander.

So the newly minted 2ndLt CommO was standing at attention and facing “The Voice” of the BN CO. The LtCol was reaming the 2ndLt (who could not actually see anything); the communications via PRC-77 VHF RADIOS (Vietnam Era Gear) we ineffective. That was one problem. The other problem was the CommO had sent a Marine out to a road intersection to intercept and guide the COMM REPAIR CONTACT VEHICLE (an M-141 1/4 Ton Jeep) to the BN Command Post. The M-141 arrived with the rear differential broken open with gears falling out of it, and the Marine assigned to guide the vehicle in was I located.

Because we were working with 26-ton LVPT-7 Armored Amphibious Vehicles (AAV) and the 60-ton M-60 tanks in the dark, we had to freeze all vehicular movement until we located the missing Marine from Comm Platoon.

In the dark, no vehicles moving and the BN CO wearing NVGs, the CommO is getting a one-sided ass chewing.

“You are the worst and most incompetent communications officer I have ever met…and then the LtCol went down his own list of the 2ndLt’s inadequacies. It was so bad that I, a USMC Captain, had to walk away. I mean, what is a 2ndLt supposed to say?

He had just been assigned 3/2 Comm PLT, and had inherited a lot of inoperable equipment.

2ndLt Montagu had not seen this moment in the recruitment literature. There was only one way for the Comm PLT to go after that, “Up.”

Later in the debrief and after action discussion I (as a Marine Aviator F-4 Phantom pilot) asked the Commander, Lima 3/2 if he had night vision goggles. It was an inane question, but I was learning GRUNT ETIQUETTE; the Marine Captain squared up on me and said, “Your damn right I had NVGs.”

I said (in front of the gathered Battalion Staff), “Hey, I’m not the CommO.”

That retort got the BN CO to realize what a dressing down he had given 2ndLt Montagu, and LtCol Vercauteran took time to apologize to the LT.

Many times in the Marines from 1976 to 2008 I saw things that would make me bite through my cheeks to keep from laughing out loud.

Reg. 101st Air Borne "Air Asslt" It was a Saturday evening, we had the weekend off, when my Team Leader shows up at my Barracks to do a surprise room inspection, I really didn't care because I had completely gone through and cleaned from top to bottom, pulling out the refrigerator and everything because I knew where he would check. He had me out there for at least an hour and a half maybe 2, doing everything Front Back Go's, low crawling through freezing water puddles, It was like Oct. or Nov. so it was cold. When it was finally over He asked me if I knew why he did that, I told him I had no idea because i was sure my room was clean, He says "Your side of the room was perfectly clean but I found a small dust bunny on your roomates side under his foot locker." My roommate was not even in our squad and I had absolutely nothing to do with his side as the room was separated with cabinets.

I have seen a couple that were hilarious. Don't know how many have seen the Lifers checklist for delivering these. I have seen "lifings" for improperly laced civilian shoes that were not in compliance with MCO P 1020.4 Frost call Juliet changes 1-6. I have seen it for failing to consume lunch with good order and discipline. I have seen more than a few times for failing to be in step while on Libo. These Marines and Sailors all went on to lead successful and Happy lives. I did get chewed out by an Army 1stLt for failing to salute him while under enemy fire. That one I discounted to self importance and paid no second mind to.

In BCT at Fort Jackson, SC one of the guys decided to get busy with themselves around the urinal, and splattered parts of themselves all over the place. We knew it was bad when our Drill Sgt took all of us guys aside away from the female recruits and said we needed to “have a talk.”

The other one was in AIT when a recruit was caught with booze and his cell phone in the barracks which was strictly prohibited at the time in the early 2000’s. All of us had some very jacked up noses from being smoked until we collapsed.

Men and women reporting their MST to their commanding officer, who is mostly likely to be their 1 in 6 odds of being the perpetrator. With he 15,000 REPORTESD such cases per year, if the victim was/is your wife, mother, sister, or other relative,whose life is permanently ruined due to PTSD, I don't think the punishment is enough due to the nature of the crime.

As a supply clerk at Fort Knox, Ky. I inventoried a storage area. I found a piece of glass that looked like it was originally a window for some type of vehicle. I told the 1st Sgt. what I had found. He ask me if it would be possible for him to use it as a desk cover until a real use could be found. I said, why not it is just lying around in the storage area. When the Battery Commander saw the glass on the desk, he said that he was going to take action to charge the 1st Sgt. with appropriating equipment for personal use. Naturally the charges never developed.

I was stationed onboard the USS Roosevelt in the early 90s. If the ship was pier side and you were in any of the hanger bays you would have to wear a cover (hat). If you came across an officer, you would be required to solute him/her. Anyway, an enlisted person had his hands full carrying some boxes while going through the hanger bays. Unfortunately, he came across the path of (M.D. Brooks, LCDR). Since his initials were M. D., we used to call him Mad Dog (behind his back). He stopped the enlisted guy and asked him if he had forgotten to do something. He replied, "What?" He then told him that he was supposed to have saluted him. The enlisted guy told LCDR Brooks that he had hands full and was not required to salute. So Mr. Brooks then told him to set the boxes down on the ground and solute him. Which he did and then LCDR Brooks yelled him for about 10 minutes giving him a lecture about military respect and courtesy for officers.

The craziest thing I saw a person get chewed out was from myself. It was my first day off the bus from basic and I was checking into the barracks for AIT. I felt my duffle bag slipping on my back and I hunched it back on my back and I accidentally set off the fire alarm. The entire barracks had to be evacuated smh. Once every from the different platoons were all out the building, the drill sergeant yelled who did it and I stood up. I got smoked in front of everyone. I thought, it was an accident! Lol good times, life lessons! It was an honor to serve!

When I was a young A1C arriving to my new job at the 341st SMW after training, where I was assigned to an office at Wing HQ. I was informed it was my job to be the first person in the office and to make the coffee. I had never made coffee in my life, so my new supervisor wrote down the instructions. One of the steps was to "clean out the silver bullet". So, the next morning I dutifully showed up first and made the coffee according to the instructions. I took the pot to the water faucet closet and proceeded to clean it with the only faucet that worked (cold water). Looking into the pot I saw how stained it looked, and I said to myself that nobody ever cleaned so I grabbed the soap and scrubbed it where most of the stains were gone and rinsed it out. When done, I followed the rest of the instructions and eagerly awaited the critique of my first pot of coffee. When everybody showed up to work and got their coffee, I was told I did good for following instructions. 45 minutes later I was actually called into the Wing Commander's office with my supervisor getting chewed out asking if I was out to poison everybody. I informed the Commander I was just following my written instructions. My supervisor spent another 10 minutes getting his turn. Turns out I did not understand that the stains had to be there and ordered to never make coffee again for the remainder of my career. My "poisoning" caused the five morning Operations Controllers, Vice Commander, Executive Officer, and the Secretary to get the runs.

Evidently, I was not supposed to scrub out the stains with soap. Everybody who drank it got the runs and there was no room left in the stalls. I was ordered by the Wing Commander to never make coffee for the rest of my career. After serving over 41 combined years on active duty, reserves and finally the Guard, I followed his orders and never made coffee again (not even for my wife).

While I was in Basic, we were at the PX getting personal hygiene items. One soldier was on crutches and I tripped over one tryin to get past them. I tripped, fell flat on my face and began laughing, what else was I supposed to do? I found it funny. The soldier I tripped over began to laugh as well.
Well, the Drill Sgt didn't find any of it amusing and when we returned to the barracks, I had to pick someone to battle buddy me getting smoked!
He screamed and hollard the entire time we were rolling, doing pushups, and of course the all time fav, weapon PT!
All I did was trip!
From then on, I tried my best to avoid that Drill Sgt. If I heard him coming down the hall, I'd run to the latrine.

While I was attending the USAF Academy, it was a season of "streaking and mooning." I personally got chewed out by a Roman Catholic Officer in Charge (OIC) because I was a doolie (freshman) I put up in my window a sign that said, "Damn Notre Dame." I was just a poor Methodist boy from Georgia, so what did I know? I had to change the first word to Down. Now at USAFA, after an infraction, You may get chewed out and also get a Form 10, which specifies the punishment, e.g., Demerits, etc.
A cadet in my squadron was streaking the length of the dormitory. He took off his bathrobe when starting, then when he finished the OIC was standing holding his bathrobe. Form 10 time. Then there is mooning. Several cadets also were cited for "inappropriate Mooning."

The windshield wipes were turn on by mistake and it was not raining, a friend was on road trip with me and my wife, he was an office in the Army and continue thinks he should control people today. he went off telling me to turn the wipes off and I was not n=moving fast enough for him. I was chewed out for not burning all the poop to cinders in our Vietnam latrine barrels. Our Vietnam base camp was in the Mekong Delta and the water table was too high to dig a catch basin into the ground, so 55 gal steel drums were cut in half and placed beneath the latrine seat holes. When full, they were dragged out (very carefully); kerosene poured on the top; lit and then someone (me, too often) had to stand upwind with a long 2x4 and stir the mess until it was burned down to cinders. I was caught by the 2nd lewie latrine inspector for not burning them completely.
Addendum: your bunk mates always made you take a shower after shit-burning duty!

Back in 1965 during morning formation of our OMS group in the hanger which was full of pigeons, our squadron commander was addressing us when one particular pigeon emptied its colon from up in the rafters and its aim was perfect. The load dropped right onto the commanders fatigue hat brim & sprayed forward. He never flinched & quickly chewed out the first person he saw that was laughing. Luckily I was alphabetically located in the rear of my flight otherwise it just might have been me.

This is an easy one, When I found out I had leukemia I was trying to get a hold of specialists at the VA who could answer questions for me since it was a life altering event. The more I reached out the more disdain I received from the VA, to the point where I went to patients advocate to find out how I could handle this issue, I was promptly told to stop calling them and chewed out because I didn't wait months for a doctor to call me, this wasn't a quick thing, I called them twice both times I held my tongue the second time i was told to piss off. I followed this call up with the VA white house hotline, which was connected via the VA suicide hotline, because I had no idea where to go, once connected and explained the situation I was told that's not their problem. This won't win because no one cares about real problem solving.

During a North Atlantic cruise and about 1961, Aboard the ship. USS Nanahala AO60 a bosanmate seaman right out of boot camp Was ordered to ascend the one of the 2 kingpost, in an effort to. chip and redlead and repaint the rust spots on the kingpost. Well working very high on these kingpost and being at sea the ship was rolling a fair bit. With redlead In a 5 gallon bucket. He slipped about half way up the ladder of the kingpost and drop the bucket the bucket of redlead which sprayed all over the ship.. Well when he came down. The captain. Totally chewed him out for being so stupid. Someone told him, that there was a simple solution to that problem. He told him to just take another, 5 gallon bucket of Gray paint to the same spot, and drop it. And it would cover all the redlead spots sprayed all over the ship. .. So being a somewhat of a redneck right out of boot camp and being a person lacking real, intelligence And being a boatswain mate seaman. He did climb the kingpost. With a 5 gallon gallon bucket of Gray paint, he dropped it. Which resulted in Gray paint being sprayed all over the Ship. Needless to say the captain went ballistic, and the two of them and the other members of the 2 division . Ended up repainting half of the ship were all this Paint had sprayed all over the ship. Fortunately. the seaman was only an E2 and he couldn't be demoted any further, everyone had a good laugh except the seamen and the individual had told him to climb the king post with a bucket of Gray paint.

When I was in the Air Force around 1999 we had a break room that we would wait in before taskings (I was a vehicle operator, and we mostly drove pilots around to various places). One day a person had a rear methane excretion in the break room, and our supervisor, an E-5 SSGT freaked out and said that he had to go to medical and get checked out because that was completely unacceptable at work.
He went to medical, and they said that he was fine and it's something that happens sometimes, and our supervisor was angry about that for years afterwards...

1990...think MC Lyte hairstyleswhere all the rage [short to one side long on the other].I had really long hair that I kept closely braided to my head. I wanted to get the sides trimmed a bit cause it would curl over my ears. Went to a new stylist and was distracted talking to the ladies in the shop. The stylist took a man's razor and shaved nearly 1 inch of hair from around my ears before everyone could scream no. There was no amount of hiding it. Another stylist tried to soften it up but alas.

Every Sergeant in my chain yelled at me. No one wanted to hear it was an accident. I got 30 days extra duty because my hair was "too manly in appearance."

Basic Training just off the bus and toeing the line. Was in the wrong Platoon and was left there all alone after the Drill called each name off but mine. He asked me who I was and then said "I don't want you". He turned his head to the round brown next to him and said "Sergeant Mix... do you want him" ? Sgt Mix said no. on down the line it went until the original DS said "No body wants you Private, go ask that garbage can over there if it wants you" Off I ran to the nearby dumpster, stood at attention and screamed "Garbage can do you want me" several times raising my voice with each new inquiry. Soon the Drills were all laughing. First and only time I have ever seen the Drills laugh in such a manner. Ridiculous ??? Maybe not so much but very memorable.

When I was stationed in Germany, I saw a Major yell for a Lieutenant in another room to "get your a** in here." When the Lieutenant arrived the Major started chewing him out for getting there so quickly. He said "don't you ever be in such a hurry to get chewed out." The most ridiculous thing I witnessed as far as a chewing out is when senior drill stood in front of entire training Company A-6-1 at north Ft Polk during Breakfast formation and told the whole company that we needed to get up early enough to wash our faces and wipe the sleep out of our eyes. He did this for about 30 minutes how it made him sick to his stomach to see such grossness, then made us low crawl by platoon to the chow line. It was ridiculous but to this day I start my day out with a good face

In 2011 we just got back from Afghanistan. I was the acting platoon Sgt. We were getting lots of new Marines coming in building up to redeploy. Our company Gunny was in charge of overseeing the billeting for our entire company. He wanted us to inform him atleast 1 week prior to a Marine getting married so that he could get all his paperwork in order to get them out of the barracks. A new Marine came to my platoon and after a 3 days of him being there the company guns found out that he had gotten married 2 weeks before. He called us both to the company office and proceeded to chew us out up and down because we didn’t inform him a week prior to him getting married. After multiple attempts to explain that I didn’t even know this man existed until 3 days ago and after being told “I don’t want to hear your (explicit)ing excuses” I decided common sense had escaped him many years ago and that it was probably best that I just let him finish his tirade and go on with my day.

Re RIDICULOUS CHEWING: While temporarily employed at a large aerospace company the Operations VP would do an early morning "walk-thru hike" throughout the company with his subordinates following close by. On one occasion one of the VP's followers neglected to stop to pick up a cigarette butt from the ground and the VP turned around and chewed him nastily in front of everyone, and even threatened to demote the poor guy for not picking up the butt!!!

This A1C I worked had a civilian girlfriend that lived off base and he wanted her to spend the night with him in his dorm so in order to not check her in the visitor center she willing got in the trunk. The one time he did that was the one time security forces decided to do a random car check. Before they opened the truck, he admitted his girl is in the trunk. Yeah, he was a talk of the base for a while.

In basic training I was in line waiting to have my weapon inspected the soldier in front of me ran over to a Bush and peed. He made it back unnoticed. I too had to pee so I ran to the same spot the other soldier had and began to pee. I was caught and the drill shot came over and told me he never told me to leave anything behind. He then pointed to the puddle of pee the other soldier left and ordered me to pick it up and put it in my cargo pocket. I felt disgusted as I knew all the wet leaves and mud I put in my pocket was covered in someone's pee.

I was stationed in Korea, in '89, a new private, first duty station. One night some fellow enlisted Soldiers went to the theater on post to see a movie. We had just got done in the motor pool so we were still in BDU's and the National Anthem plays at the beginning of the show. We all stand at the position of attention and when its done we take our seats. A Warrant Officer then comes stomping down my aisle toward me. He stands in front of me and says, "on your feet Private". I jump to attention. He proceeds to chew me out because I am out of uniform. Now being a new private, I was a little intimidated by officers, especially warrant officers, or anyone of higher rank, because up to that point, I don't think I had ever seen one before. So he chewed me out in front of everyone in the theater for being out of uniform, NOT HAVING ANY RANK ON MY COLLAR! My reply, "But Sir, I'm a Private". His reply, "Oh, well get promoted then"

In Air Force basic training, I saw a drill instructor chew out a new recruit for having toothpaste on the inside of the cap. He wanted it cleaned with a q tip to keep it clean; I found out much later the reason was said to be small details like properly doing as you are told could prevent accidents and deaths. A small electrical connection not performed properly could bring down an aircraft and kill all those on board. It would have made more sense to us had we been told at the tine..

My son worked for Lowes. His job was to load bags of mulch into customers cars or trucks as they came to pick it up OUTSIDE. He was doing this on a day when it was 95 degrees, he was sweating profusely, and a new Lowes assistant manager walks up to him and asks "why don't you have your mask on?" as I said, he is outside, it's HOT, is not in contact with customers, and this manager is chewing him out for not having a mask on !! The manager told him further that he could put a mask on or LEAVE. This was his last day at LOWES needless to say.

This recruit was walking along between the squad bay and the medical wing when suddenly the tiniest screaming session could be heard in the distance. As distance was covered, the noise grew louder and clearer, " SKITTLLLLLES...SKITTLLLLES!!!" A recruit surrounded front to back, side to side with drill instructors, spit flying, fingers wagging, jaws poised and flapping, " GET ON YOUR FACE! GET BACK UP! TURN AROUND! LOOK AT ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU!"

Apparently, after receiving clear instruction to remover and discard the candy from everyone's MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) this recruit thought it would be wise to snatch up the candy for later. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, there was a shake-down where the recruits were searched for contraband.

After being caught, the poor recruit scurried off at his instructor's leisure to be reprimanded.

Punishment: Remedial attitude adjustment training and having to repeat the name of his sin, "SKITTLES!"

During our monthly parades at Camp Gordon, GA. I was assigned as a platoon leader, one of my duties was after hearing the command from the CO, Company I had to respond, Platoon, which I did however I had just received a full upper denture, when I shouted out Platoon my new dentures when flying. Without hesitation I went about 15 feet to retrieve said dentures, I did that and the whole platoon was laughing. After the parade I was in front of the CO, trying to explain why the whole platoon had been laughing. and why I broke ranks. I was chewed out while standing at attention in front of the company commander. After a couple minutes of this yelling and screaming he said to me, now get out of here. he told me that he had to explain to the Battalion Commander and as I was leaving he said with a straight face, now use this denture cream to hold your darn plate in your mouth. True story.

As we were going to formation unbeknown to me, someone dropped a penny and it rolled under my bunk. When I came back from classes, I had demerits for 1. Unkept area 2. Failure to secure valuables 3. Lincoln not shaved.......

One day the bird followed her (even though she had to drive 10 miles) to the armory. It would then fly around the building, pecking at the windows trying to get inside to see her driving everyone else in the offices crazy - either by the novelty seeing this big black and white bird trying to get into the windows or because it would not stop and made a lot of noise. Eventually we found out that it was her 'pet' bird and after she went outside to feed it, it finally would fly away and return home. The next day she came into the armory, she told us that she had locked it inside the house so it would not follow her again (she also needed to go home at lunchtime to let it out for a while)...

It was 2am and most of our squads had very little sleep. The sound of the air conditioning in the BIDS became like a sweet lullaby. We've all grown accustom to the continuous sound and lulled most of us to sleep. 30 min later, there's a call on the radio for a possible intruder. The military alphabet went out the door after being partially awake and we started using words like : Unicorn, Steak, America, over the radio. Cmd central, of course was listening and immediately told all our squads to meet up and start doing pushups in the moonlight "until we wake up and recited EVERY single military alphabet". It still cracks me up to this day.

I remember being in basic training and got chewed out for having my hands in my pockets and not having a reason for that. I got smoked with all kinds of grass drills, push-ups, and some other drills for a couple of hours for that. While under way for sea trials, I was cleaning one of the p-ways and in using a push broom a Master Chief saw how I was using the broom.(I dared to pull the broom towards me) He had me stand at attention and proceeded for the next 10 minutes to chew my ass on how to properly use the push broom. He then stood in the P-way and supervised me to make sure I did not use the broom incorrectly untill my task was complete.

Ft. Jackson Basic Training, 1985 New Hollywood, D-8-2, August, Killing an ant in basic training. Our DI loved to talk to the ants, and they would reply back to him, like "what did you say ant? someone moved in the back row?". So this was a kind of running scenario with him.

One day we were in the quad area, and it was a weekend and obviously we were in trouble for something we did, and the DI comes up and jumps down to the ground, picks up something and screams "who killed my ant?". These he proceeds to PT us for what seemed to be an eternity, then we had to have a funeral for that ant. It was an entire afternoon of fun. We heard about that dead ant for the rest of basic training. I have to tell you, I watched out where I was walking when I was in the quad area. freaking ants.

when in basic training during an inspection when the CO got to me our senior Drill Sargent told him I was a smart ass who thought I knew all the answers to all the questions. after looking me up and down and seeing I was A-J squared away my CO asked if I thought I knew all the answers to all the questions ? I replied Sir that depends ! he said .. depends on what ? with a straight face I said: Sir what are the questions ? boy I did push ups? front lean and rest forever ...

I was an AZ on a the battleship New Jersey, supporting the effort with UAVs. I had an urgent message that needed approval from a higher ranking service member, and went topside. I got chewed out because my boots were shinier than the Lt. I delivered the message to. However, till this day, I don't believe that was the reasoning behind the unnecessary outburst.

When I was in basic training I had 2 female SSgt Training Instructors (TI), who repeatedly came to work with hickies on their necks several times a week. Thinking they might appreciate some advice which might be advantageous to their dress and appearance, I suggested that if they rub tooth paste on their hickies they would disappear. As you may guess my attempt to help was rejected in a most unappreciated way. Besides being chewed out royally, I was ordered to rise earlier then my fellow basic trainees every morning to make coffee for all the TIs until (and if) I graduated.

Anyone want to the guess the source of the water I appropriated for the Training Instructors coffee for the remainder of basic training?

For wearing the wrong footwear. I have small feet, too small for the average range of boots in AF basic training (in 1988) so they had to measure my feet, take impressions, and order boots to be made for me. They also sent me to medical to get a waiver to wear those lovely black lace up shoes for everything that wasn't athletic and tennis shoes for the rest (marching practice, PT, ropes course, etc.). Due to other appointments, I did not make it to the ropes course the morning my flight went & had to go the next day. I was chewed up one side and down the other by an NCO at the course until another DI ordered me to present my waiver. I was too fearful of the first NCO at the time to appreciate the egg he must have worn, but when I think about it makes me ask why someone flaunts the rules before chewing them (I do still chew if there is no valid reason though.)

when I was at basic training at Lackland AFB in 1976, I saw a fellow airman get chewed out for bringing his harmonica with him from home. They made him play it non stop for an hour!

Well, I have to say me. I was stationed on my new USAF base and flight in 1990 when on my first Monday there we had an Open Ranks inspection. Our Chief of maintenance was doing the inspection when he stopped and informed me he wanted my BDUs to be starched even though they were pressed. After the inspection, I asked for a moment of his time. With my supervisor there I informed the Chief I could not comply with his lawful order. He was not happy and was getting upset about my answer and was threatening me with up to an Article 15. I then informed him I would not violate a direct order. He asked me what I was talking about, so I took off my blouse and showed him the tag inside and it said basically, Starching the Battle Dress Uniform, is in violation of a Direct order from the Secretary of the Air Force. Not the right impression for my first week at my new shop with my Chief of Maintenance. He went off grumbling under his breath but I never had to starch my uniform at any time and never got into any trouble for it either. Other people in my squadron stopped starching theirs too when they heard what I did.

I took the last of the pot roast in the chow hall, the day before basic training graduation and the drill sergeant behind me asked, “who took the last of the Yankee Pot Roast?”

Of course I responded that I did. I was then dropped and told to count off, “1 Yankee Pot Roast, 2 Yankee Pot Roast, and so on;” while the rest of the mess hall cheered me on.

It was the only time I was dropped all of basic training other than group punishments. I think that was the real reason. They also had a ceremony of me shaving for the first time in the day of graduation. Of course it was all peach fuzz and I didn’t have to shave again for a couple years.

When I was in boot camp, a recruit recieved a box of candy and chocolate bars from her grandmother and the drill instructor chewed her out for recieving it and made her eat the entire box of candy and chocolate bars until she barfed. The drill instructor's kept chewing her out while she was eating eat, when she would stop and make her eat more, and then said write to her grandmother and tell her not to send this shit anymore. She sat in the middle while the rest of us recruits sat in a circle around her. We were all dying of by the smell of chocolate bars we couldn't eat and watching her eating it was torture, until she barfed. I remember thinking yeah this recruit don't want chocolate anymore.

Steam Cleaning A Stainless Steel 3 Gallon insulated coffee container behind the galley. I was stationed in the Crash Crew and we had to go get our chow for the 20 or so guys Happened to me while in the Navy . I was told you never clean a coffee pot or container. During our morning briefing one of our fellow Airmen gave a safety briefing with the message "Don't forget to wear your reflector belt during hours of darkness." My friend who was sitting next to me turned to me and said, "Yeah! You don't wanna be Missing in Action like Col. Braddock!" We both started laughing. Next thing you know, our SMSgt orders both of us to report to his office immediately after the meeting. We go to his office, he makes us stand at attention, then he just starts shouting at us. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my friend shaking. The SMSgt was literally yelling at us in his office. Come to find out, he thought we were making fun of the guy giving the briefing. Once he found out that wasn't the case, he was all apologetic. Talk about flying off the handle without knowing all the facts. I thought my friend was gonna pass out. lol

When at the rifle range on Paris Island in boot camp we were instructed to shower and shave after a hard physical day.

Several recruits shaved and showered; we were subjected to lengthy and severe exercise punishment.

Me... I was at the administration desk at the Family Hospital at Camp Lejeune and Labor and Delivery called and ordered me to go to the Blood Bank at the main hospital, as a woman's uterus had inverted and she was bleeding to death. So I ran to my car and drove to the main hospital. Found a parking spot out front, ran up to the lab, grabbed and signed for the blood, ran back to the car only to find some LTC waiting in front of my car ordering me to give him the keys to my car. I informed him I was on a detail and an emergency as a person was bleeding to death and that I was ordered by a Captain..full bird...to get this as fast as possible// The violation??? ...I parked in the captain's parking space... I was sent to Captains Mass only to have it dismissed after some long lecture. It never was on my record. The second time, same type of issue.. Instead of driving, so not to get in trouble, I ran the mile.. as I was slowing to turn into the circle in front of the hospital a military car pulls up in front of me and stopped and out comes the Colonel. The Commander of the Marine Corps Base and some lacky... The lacky yells at me and tries to dress me down for not saluting. I informed him that the Navy does not salute when performing a work detail and that I am getting blood for a person bleeding to death.. He ordered me to salute, so I handed him all the empty bags of blood I was returning to the lab. He looked and his face redded .. I saluted, grabbed the bags, ran up to the lab and got the blood... In the meantime all who saw this were out front laughing and making a fool out of the lacky. I did not pause to those cheering me as it truly was an emergency. Next thing I know , I was promoted and sent to work for the Main Hospital Administration and was in charge of three departments.
