I don't Camp unless you count Hampton Inns, but I can tell you there are many sights to see on those routes, some are well known Natural things like caves, canyons, and cascades. Others like the tiny Wizard of Oz museum in Kansas, or the giant excavation machine in Pittsboro KS, where sixty people get in a bucket, get lifted fifty feet in the air, and have a wedding.
or stopping at Graceland, or Beal Street, or the old Route Sixty Six parts coming out of California into AZ...and picking it up again in St. Louis. The Smokies in TN/NC would be a great last stop. I reread and realized you were talking about on-base. KY has Campbell and Knox. Not much ACDU in TN. Arnold at Tullahoma and Millington may have one. If you can alter course a tad, The Land Between the Lakes (LBL) is Federal. It's between KY and Barkley Lake, and is great camping. They have buffalo that can be seen from the road, and an elk preserve that is less conspicuous. You can drive through it for a few bucks, but no guarantee of seeing them. Try Echo Canyon Campsite in Dinosaur National Monument [The Utah Side]. I don't think they've paved the road in yet [used to be 4 wheel drive only, but I know that is changed]. It was never crowded. The swimming and fishing is great. Especially if you've got small kids. a mile hike in almost any direction puts you in small narrow limestone gorges with beautiful little private swimming holes. That way you will get to stop at places along the New Mexcio/Arizona areas. Also, pick up a National Park/Forest pass which will get you reduced prices for camping, etc. at the National Parks/Forests. I'm not sure if Clovis still has military camping areas but that part of the country is really pretty. I-40 will also parallel Route 66 across parts of New Mexico/Arizona. Please stop in Williamsburg AZ to get good maps/directions and camping information for the Grand Canyon. There are several areas to camp in that whole area. You will also want to stop at the Hualapai Nation to walk out over the Grand Canyon.
