With the job market the way the job market is today I see the first three as the answer to your question that is currently relevant to my situation Elizabeth Malkin. However, it is possible that I will give up and stop looking at some point.

I am currently looking for a job, will probably be looking for a job for the next 6 months, and most likely will still be looking for work a year from now.

I'm always looking for a job. My current job is fantastic. The pay leaves a lot to be desired, however. I've also started a position is a company rep/passive salesman. This pays better, but is only part-time.

Good jobs are hard to come by in this area without a real degree.

I am a Department of the Army civilian employee. I do not use RP to look for work as we have our own site for most Federal agencies:https://www.usajobs.gov/

Although I am looking, that is for promotion within the government and not to anything in the private sector.

I am at 280 days out from official retirement and around 200 days out from projected last day in uniform (leave/ptdy). I have already started making contacts, but will not be applying for positions until I am much closer to retirement. In the Nursing career field, I have fewer limitations on employment as long as I stay clinic floor nurse. My desire is to teach at college/university level, and I am sure I can do that, but may take more time to get my foot in the door. I can work as a staff nurse until that happens! MOST employment assist sites (RallyPoint and a few others that I know of) are mostly industry outside of medical, so I doubt I will use them in any serious manner for job searching.

I was a 63b10h8 since being home i have worked at a credit union, went to school for heating and cooling and recieved my certification. Went to college on my G.I.bill got my degree in general studie, right now presently a lube technician/ mechanic helper. Im ready for a new experience with pay and benefits that come close to what i made in the service full time.

I am disabled. Left work after 30+ years doing mechanic work. I have R.A. bad in hands, feet, shoulder etc. I would love to go back to work but who would hire me if I could not perform my duties. Fighting SSI and DAV trying to get help and that's not working. This June will be 1 year and yes I miss work but now I do not have to deal with chronic pain due to setting around or riding a wheel chair (when needed) and no stress.

I am currently working a seasonal job with the Forest Service which has no merit so therefor has no possibility of turning into a full time permanent position. I graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Criminology (Political Science minor) in May 2014...thought being a veteran with a college degree would open more doors. After a year of job searching, it is tough not to rescind to negative attitudes about age discrimination...yet I persevere.

Currently working for a defense contractor supporting the AZ Air National Guard Predator UAV program as a systems administrator.

I am considering new positions. I am more interested in doing IA (Information Assurance) than system administration. I would prefer to stay in the contractor/government sector so that I can utilize my clearance.

I was fortunate to retire on a Tuesday and begin work the following Monday in Texas with a Defense Contractor and have been here almost 20 years doing what I did in the USAF. I work for a great company, with good benefits that is very veteran friendly and is almost always hiring. We have been told we have requirements for almost 400 more engineers now and there are plans to add an additional 1200-1500 folks over the next 18 months at this location alone. Engineers, EMI folks, aircraft maintenance folks (A&P nice but not required) are always on the hiring list along with many other trades. I have been quite fortunate and good luck to all out there.

Always looking for a better job. I know I can learn and do literally any job and proved it with taking this one with no experience at all. However, my dream would be to do something in graphic design. But the lack of a degree and time to get a degree hurts that dream. Have to work to pay bills. And I can't do too much due to my injuries.

I'm an Office Manager/Executive Assistant for a retaining wall company. I got back into the field of construction (Seabee) after working at the Minneapolis Va Hospital for 6 years. If I leave this job the company would crumble like a poorly engineered retaining wall.

I was infantry so there really aren't any civilian jobs in my field, law enforcement would be the closest thing though.

I got out in 2004 and started working for a distribution company driving a truck (CDL-A) and I make over $60k with my best year being a little over $72k. It's not over the road and I'm home daily. It's hard work because we don't just drive, we deliver product to over 20 stores per day using a hand cart. The company is a national company and is veteran friendly, our CEO served in the Marine Corps.

I currently have a job that I love. The issue is that the Company I work for is in a downward spiral and I am afraid that If i dont look for a job that will continue to feed my family then within a year I wont have a job due to layoffs and/or the business going under. but if i stick it out I may end up in a better position . not sure what to do here.

I would ideally like to be in emergency management, but it is hard to get on w/ the state agency w/o a foot in the door already. However, the issue I have is that I hold an advanced degree, which has been viewed as over-qualified for entry positions.

Im secure in what Im doing, partly as an contract employee for two company's and self employed.
I have peers that fell into very lucrative positions post retirement doing much of what we did as SGM.. plan, organize, resource, supervise, problem solve.
If the right job came around and was offered, with great pay and benefits, and kept me mentally engaged, physically active (I don't do desks) Id strongly consider it.

If I had the know how Elizabeth Malkin I would find great joy and fulfillment if I could form a veterans group taking back discheveled areas in communities that have been made a low priority for politicians. I lived in poor areas in the city and growing up surrounded by abandoned buildings and worthless plots full of debris and crack houses really does a mental number on you growing up. We have all seen areas of town where you lock the doors and roll up the windws, or just bypass completely. I want to take them back. I'm retired and for some reason I can't land a job. If I could be a part of something like this, I would considered myself employed and have a meaningful sense of purpose. I can't be alone in thinking and feeling this way. I'm an extrovert on the computer, but I have a hard time dealing with strangers. Working like this would be good therapy for me as well. My problem is that I am a babe in the woods when it comes to these non-military projects. Who do I see about getting permission? I don't want to pay out of pocket for giving back to the community. I would need large debris dumpsters donated to the locations, recyling dumpsters for reclaiming materials, someone to take them away, etc. I'd love for the town to donate the paint and rollers, plant some trees, repair fences, etc....but not pay for this out of pocket. It seems like local politicians can't be bothered with this type of endeavor. "Too much potential for lawsuits" is the common response. "I have free medical coverage and will sign a waiver" onlty to be followed by "what's your angle??" Too many people are suing for $5 million dollars for tripping on a city street I guess. They want to know who I am affiliated with and whom am I representing? Why can't I just be useful and do what you refuse to do? Do I need to start a corporation just so I can hand out business cards? It isn't about making money, it is about doing for others. Recruiting volunteers would also be a challenge, but I could get the OIF/OEF case managers to help me out in that area. I am just clueless how to deal with these people and get started.

I own my own company and I am on the Sales side of Data Center Architecture. I have founded and grew and then sold three (3) previous companies, all of them at 7 years and roughly $40M in annual revenue. I guess you could even call me a "start up artist". I love Information Technology and have been doing this for 31 years.

I'm ready to retire as soon as I find a buyer for my current company. There is a very large retail company working with me to understand how they could buy me out then use the sales and services offers to other, smaller than them retail companies. This could be a large sale and allow me to support my current lifestyle. I love "Big Boy Toyz" and I'm not cheap!

I am currently laying in a hospital in Utah after having spine surgery yesterday from a mishap that ended me career 23 years ago in the military, The doc told me its a 50/50 chance the op will change anything for the better so I am unable to look for employment.If this works and I can walk ,stand and function normal I am debating on going back to school and fulfilling a life long dream of working with restoring vehicles.

After completing 3 months of conductors training I now have made over 75k a year for the past 5 years. I know of others who put more time in than me who have made up into the high 80s. Very selective recruitment process but nothing that any veteran that has remained drug free and without any law infractions can't sail through.

I was lucky, very lucky, I had a job and other offers and options, before I left active duty. I was on transition leave for 20 days, and started working as soon as I legally could, while on terminal leave. Contacts really matter, and reputation, and word of mouth is huge part of breaking through the masses. Elizabeth Malkin.

I guess my situation is odd. I am planning to move to Europe in the next 6 months, but I have a job already lined up with my fiance's employer. Not working in my career field, but it will be enough to cover my expenses while I look for IT work in the Netherlands. Being a native English speaker will be a plus but my Dutch skills are terrible so I'll use the warehouse job to practice (although officially the warehouse language is English strangely enough) until I can mumble my way through an interview.

I have to say, it's a bit frustrating when you allow only one choice where 2 or 3 are equally valid.

Even though I have been continuously employed for the past decade, I have also been almost continuously looking for my next job (or at least accepting calls from recruiters and listening to what they were offering) for most of those same years. That is the civilian employment reality which I've become accustomed to -- and which I mentor my subordinates and peers to survive and prosper in.

I work for USG (United States Gypsum Company) as a Contractor Specialty Representative. I have a great job as an outside sales rep working with drywall contractors selling SHEETROCK Brand Products. I've been with the company for almost 19 years now. It only took me four years with five other jobs after my first discharge from active duty to find it! Persistence pays off.

I learned a couple of years ago to designate time when I was not actively employed but looking as my 'retirement in training' period. I moved from full-time employment to contract employment a couple of years ago because I got tired of trading 100 hours of work for 40 hours of pay and traveling off the clock. So, now, when I am on a contract, I ask for the market rate, work 40 hours a week, get paid for every hour and when the contract ends (planned or unplanned), I don't sweat it.

I may not be happy to have to tap into my 401K and IRA between contracts but I saved that money for periods like this. I only need to make it to next October when my military pension kicks in. So, it could be worse.

I retired in Nov 2014 and have tried to get a position as a federal employee, I get referrals but no interviews. I have also applied to civilian contracting positions and still nothing. I am willing to relocate. I never thought I would be unemployed this long. In the meantime I am trying to be a happy wife/mom since I was deployed for two years straight and then located at Fort Gordon for another 16 months without the family. I am trying to use LinkedIn more to connect with people and I am also attending a group called Jobseekers in Peachtree City, GA. I have a TS/SCI and I thought that would be helpful but maybe too many other people do as well?

Having a nightmare of a time finding anything other than part time fast food or retail in Tampa, FL....a lot of employers say they are veteran friendly but it's all a joke in my experience.

EDIT: I checked the career section here on RP...unless I have a CDL, can deal with retail, or have a degree in healthcare then sure I can find something. There's only THREE employers in the Tampa area.

I am still looking, but to be honest, I am not looking really hard. I was able to build up a bit of a savings to aide in being a slacker. I have noticed that having a TS SCI doesn't really matter if you don't have either an IT or Intel background. Just my two cents....
