What's your favorite "military cadence?"

Ah yes, "Jody calls," we've all heard them, marched to them, run to them, or called them out in a motivated tone; so, what are some of your all time favorites? As this is an inter-service thread, we want to hear from all of you--Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Reserve of each of the above, and the National Guard--so what are your favorite service-specific cadences, and do you have an old standby or trusty go-to cadence? Perhaps it was one that was once popular but somehow fell out of use, or maybe an just an old standard or unique favorite. Please feel free to share any photos, videos, sound files, stories, associated memories, and/or anything else needed to help to tell your story. I'm sure that an old classic or two comes to mind, so "one, two, three, four-or... this is what we're here for-or..." So, pull up a keyboard and let's get this thing started, thank you for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

I was fortunate enough to attend US Air Force
Sergeants’ Academy (36 prospective first sergeants and me) several years ago,
and during our formation runs our instructor cracked out this one. He would
call the instruction one segment at a time and then repeat just his part with
us answering in suit. He started with the first segment and then repeating it before adding another
segment each time through until we completed the entire chorus so it sounded like this:

I say “One”. You say “Two”

I say “Air Force. You say “Blue.”

TI – One

US – Two

TI – Air Force

US - Blue

I say “Three”. You say “Four”.

I say “Give me”. You say “More”.

TI – Three

US – Four

TI – Give me

US - More

I say “Five”. You say “Six”.

I say “Just for”. You say “Kicks”.

TI – Five

US - Six

TI – Just for

US - Kicks

I say “Seven”. You say “Eight”.

I say “Feeling”. You say “Great”.

We all learned it and by the second or third day we were taking turns
calling the run. About half way through the second week, we were out for an afternoon
trot around Gunter AFB when one of my classmates changed the “Air Force” to “Coast Guard”. Since I remain one of only two Coasties to ever attend USAF FSA, it was a nice
touch, and the ensuing laughter was a huge pick me up for all of us because the
weather was brutal….30 degrees with about 10 knot headwind! I still sing this
to myself when I run around the neighborhood. It's just a good memory!

I have a ton of favorites but one that the privates loved when I was on the trail was "Killing The Baby Seals". But the one that got them most motivated was "Napalm Sticks to Kids". Pretty sure that you don't want to use them in today's PC environment.

Sorry Major Burns, but this is one topic I really enjoy.

I think that the Army cadence, is a bit extra ordinary.

but not to change the topic, the Marines are rather good too.

When the DI starts to march.

During their marches all he is really saying : Left, right, left , right.

but the way he sounds it off, kind of gives it class.

None. I am horrible at it. I got called twice in OCS only to be told that I suck and that I can never call cadence again. Which was fine by me. Luckily when I was a scout we didn't call cadence. One of the many reasons why I became an officer is to never call cadence again. To me that is NCO business.<div><br></div><div>Also, if you can call cadence you are not running hard enough.</div>

Not an official military cadence but in AIT we used to get fired up after a long day at class by marching to Twist and Shout. Our platoon SGT would always comment on motivation every time he heard this.

Oh man! This is my bread and butter! I look forward to company/battalion/brigade/NCO/division/corps/post runs just for this. My favorites are the ones that the creative mind come up with. I usually start with one everybody knows and then slowly ease into the 'signature' cadences. I have I think 2 signature cadences that I bring out the bag. 'When that left foot hits the ground....', 'Ahab had a camel named Clyde...'.

Cadence calling is one thing I have always liked since I joined the military. I believe it makes running fun, the crazier the cadence the better. My favorite cadence is kook-aid kook-aid.

My first duty assignment we had a very dynamic company commander. He made up cadences for the unit. He had one called "Wing-dang-doo" I can't say the words to the cadence due to it being so un-PC. The assignment seemed almost magical. Hard work, serious unit cohesion, & a commander that could get give motivational speeches that the entire company would follow him to the pits of Hell. In essence, the cadence by itself is not much but the memory of an awesome unit & exciting times is what makes it my favorite.

Always liked the "Yellow Bird" and variations/continuations thereof. Just warmed my heart to hear the troops chanting such gentle, kind words as we tromped through the woods. Had to chant it on the road and trails in the woods because we weren't allowed these kinds of cadences within earshot of housing or public areas on any of the posts.

I dont even recall marching after basic except at a change of command ceremony. We had difficulty enough getting AF troops to stay in step. That was way long time ago. Before the AF joined the real military.

I always liked Blood on the Risers. I'm not Airborne or anything but it had a story to tell with some dark humor thrown in. I used it mostly at AIT when we were doing the student leadership thing and had to learn to march formations and such. It was refreshing to hear something other than the same half-dozen we sang every day and everyone seemed to like it. Also, my schoolhouse was the farthest from the DFAC and our company area so there was plenty of time to call a longer cadence.

<p>If you have ever been In a Military Clothing Sales Store and saw a running cadence tape lbeled with a Ranger Tab and a pair of Jump wings, titled, "Run with the U.S. Army Airborne Rangers", then you have heard me sing cadence- I am 75% of that tape and was known through out the Ranger Regment in the late '80's for my cadence.  One of my favorites was "Lear Jet SWAT Team" those that matter have heard it, sung it, and remember it from RIP or Pre Ranger.</p><p><br></p>

LITTLE RED WAGON (the cadence caller has to be extreemly motivated)

Now the cadence caller brings ups the volume and motivation, sometimes I get to a point where it sounds almost like a goth singer is leading the formation, and you can repeat this over and over as long as you have the energy and voice for it. If i have the formation quiet down I will take it down to a wisper eventually.

One cadence that I can never forget is “Hard Work.” My drill
sergeant in basic training was one of those classic infantry that did
everything (airborne, air assault, range, ranger instructor, sniper, pathfinder)
and “hard work” was definitely the best cadence

One cadence that is always in every unit run is "Rock-Steady." It is one of those cadence that motivates you to keep going after the third or fourth mile.

Little Red Wagon is my favorite. I also enjoy "When I Get to Heaven" (especially when someone loses track of where they are and gives St Peter a boot to the chest lol). My DS used to always call the "Somebody Ain't Gonna Make It" cadence and it really pumped everyone up. Back in 1987, I and 2 other NCOs from the Ranger Regiment were recorded by Documentary Recordings to create a marching and running cadence tape for the Recruiting Command. /We had 44 holdover RIP students running in a circle as we sang cadence. some of their favorites were:

Lear Jet SWAT Team
Dark Side Calling
Man of Death
War Pigs (Ozzy Osbourne inspired)

You had to be there to know what I'm talking about, but I would call cadence on 5 mile runs and never repeat a cadence...

I remember hearing "yellow ribbon" on the way to the PX in basic training. While we were waiting to go back, the drill sergeant asked if we were "thin skinned pansies" or if we were "real men." He said, "If you're a real man, say hooah!" You know how we responded. So he led us in the other version of that cadence, "whips and chains." I only heard it once, but it remains my favorite just because of the shocked looks I get when I recite it.

Well Sir since I was one of the first women in the group to be trained in 1978 to fight the front lines with men. I regret to tell you I did not care for singing the cadences they had us singing. Some were about women making money on their backs and more like that. But I did it loudly and proudly even tho it was not appropriate. But it was a mans army and I chose to be in it. I just didn't realize women would start training right then for front lines. A person tends to block out what they felt unapropriate as they got older. But I guess the left right oh left was the best. lol.....

I like sea shanties. Sea shanties are the working songs of the Navy, back in the days of wooden ships and iron men.

Sea shanties have different cadences depending on the work for which they were sung/chanted. Hoisting anchor, raising sales, rowing, whatever. There are three basic types of sea shanties:

Short haul shanties, for quick pulls over short periods of time.

Halyard shanties for heavier work requiring more setup time between actions.

Capstan shanties, for repetitive work requiring a sustained rhythm not involving line work.

Boot Camp, just opened Stuart Mesa (later Edison) rifle range with only 2 series there. Foggy morning, road guards out with lanterns going ding, ding. We could hear but not see other platoons due to the fog. Then our DI starts to call cadence to the Marine Corps Hymn. Dead silence except for our DI calling cadence and the sound of our boots as one. That sound of one boot slapping the pavement and the Marine Corps Hymn in cadence and I still choke up thinking about it to this day.

My favorite is one that we were ordered not to use. One of the guys in my company (C065 January 1991 - April 1991, Orlando, FL) had this beautiful, deep singing voice. I believe he was a professional before joining. Anyway, everyone got bored with the generic left, right, left stuff, so one day he just starts singing Leeeeeeft, right, le-e-eft.... leeeeeft, right, le-e-eft.... And I can't really do it justice, but it sounded beautiful and he sang it so that the first left was 3 steps, then the right for one pace, then the le-e-eft lasted for 4 steps, so that it was perfectly timed for 8 steps/beats. Everyone in our company loved it, and we sort of rallied behind it. However, our CCs figured out that it instilled pride in our company that we had something no one else did, so it made us better than everyone else. It did. So they ordered him never to sing it for us again. But for a few days, it was pretty amazing.
