He always called me "sarge" and hated it, but he was a great kid. He went off to training and completed it all to include Ranger school. He went to Ft. Drum, immediately deployed to Afghanistan and was killed Aug 20, 2009.. The entire community where I recruited came together and presented a memorial stone in front of his high school (he also volunteered his time to assist in coaching track and C.C.).. His parents were very grateful and so was I. This is a touchy subject, but wanted to share my favorite memorial. Response by MSG Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 24 at 2013 5:05 PM 2013-12-24T17:05:31-05:00 2013-12-24T17:05:31-05:00 CPT Private RallyPoint Member 26970

I have two:

The first would be the Texas Barriers at Fort Leonard Wood in the Sapper Grove. They are enscribed with the names of those Engineers who have fallen. There is something about the grove with the barriers, the ampitheater, the Sapper Statue, the WWII barracks area, that just solidifies the Engineer Regiment and it's contribution through both it's success and those who have made the most significant sacrfrice in service. You can then walk down through the static displays to the museum to see more about the history of the Engineer Regiment. It is also neat to have the MP and Chemical Regimental Groves and Museum all colocated in the same area. It permits us to show solidarity. Something about this is just very grounding to me. It reminds me where I have started, and were I must go in the future in order to maintain the standards that have been set for me.

While not techinically a single memorial, I find that rolling around West Point and seeing all of the memorials, statues, great names emblazened on the halls, the history of the post, and the museum to be tremendously inpsiring. Some of the greatest leaders came through West Point and it's role in the American Revolution help really bring home patriotism. I am on West Point at least once a week and I find something new every time that gives me a moment of pause to think. Today, I left the chapel and noticed that some of the stained glass windows were in dedication to fallen West Pointers. It made me think about the sacrifice that they made and how I could be spiritually charging myself at the same time as steeling my nerves so that I may have the same dedication to face whatever may come. It's was a great comparison of how a person's spirituality and personal beliefs may be part of what grants them the ability to stand in harms way with confidence.
Response by CPT Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 24 at 2013 8:15 PM 2013-12-24T20:15:47-05:00 2013-12-24T20:15:47-05:00 SFC William Hutchinson 26978

Mine would have to be the Korean War Memorial. My first time seeing it was during a rainy overcast day at dusk. Seeing the memorial in that light and seeing the individual coming out of the wall at the memorial is breath taking and eerie at the same time. Truly an awe inspiring visit to that memorial! Be it due to a particular name on it, service related or a patriotic sentiment attached to it. For just over a year now I have been searching for and documenting memorials dedicated to the men and women of America's veterans. Some are from small communities, others are tucked away in large parks unknown to all but those who might stumble upon them or search for them, while others are large and are known about. I personally don't have a favorite since to me they are all equally important to tell a story. In essence they are all my favorite. I read about it there and discovered that the other half of it was at Rhine Main. So that night we made it all the way there and saw the other end as well... It is referred to as an "Air Bridge" and basically looks like the two base's of the STL Arch at each end with the middle cut out. It is said that if the two ends were constructed completely, they would meet in the middle. It is by no means an IMPRESSIVE looking design. The marker can be reached from Ridge Road 0.4 miles west of Clark Avenue. The Marker is at The Highground. Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Marker is at or near this postal address: W7031 Ridge Road, Neillsville WI 54456, USA. It was originally a memorial to Vietnam War veterans, although the high ground area now includes memorials to veterans of other wars." If you have any trouble making out the inscription, it reads: "Kilroy Was Here: During World War II this was a symbol for the American Serviceman. Any place in the world where one of them went he would see it. It was found in restrooms, on trucks, tanks, ships, bombed out walls, and almost any place it could be painted, penned, scratched or chalked. Even during an invasion or battle, someone would leave this symbol where those following would see it. It was a symbol of courage, pride, encouragement, and very definitely a moral booster. That is why it was selected to represent all the service personnel who served in World War II all around the world. This is a loving memorial embracing all who served during the World War II years from 1940 through 1945." http://www.kilroywashere.org/001-Pages/01-0KilroySightings-5.html

WWII's Kilroy Was Here, Sightings that continue 60+ years later page 5

Kilroy Was Here captured the imagination of millions of Gis during WWII and the Korean War – See why!

We took a little field trip there as part of in processing. I got so tied up in the memorial portion that I never made it to the museum. The main part of the memorial is made up of many small walls listing the names of those that perished in the the Battle of Okinawa. It is set out in sections. One of my favorite lunch spots is Washington Square, very near Independence Hall. It's only a city block in size and simple in decoration but there is a small Tomb of an Unknown Soldier from the Revolution near a statue of Washington with an eternal flame. Behind is a wall with 3 inscriptions, my favorite reads: 'Freedom is a light for which many men have died in darkness.'

Lesser known is another Revolutionary War memorial northeast of Philly in Bucks County along the Delaware River. Washington's Crossing historic park is there and included is another Unknown Soldier memorial. This one has a large flag pole and the base is made of 13 different types of stone found in each of the original colonies. There are 22 graves that read only 'Unknown Soldier Continental Line' and one marked grave for Captain James Moore of New York. Like many of you, I've had the good fortune to visit many of these.

I've been blessed to spend a Memorial Day Weekend in Washington, DC; visiting all of the major National Memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. I've been to several Civil War Battlefields and visited the memorials erected by States honoring the fallen from both Armies. I've been to France and visited the WW I Cemeteries and Memorials.

I've even visited a memorial as an official Army dignitary to one of the most shameful acts in U.S. history: the mass-execution of 38 Dakota Indians at Mankato, Minnesota on 26 DEC 1862, in the wake of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. This was the largest mass-execution in U.S. history. 308 men were originally condemned, but President Lincoln commuted the sentences of all but 38. In 2005, I was one of three Officers asked to represent the Army at an annual commemoration ceremony on the anniversary of the event. It was a powerful and humbling experience. The giant white buffalo stands as the Dakota memorial at the site of the gallows.

My personal favorite memorial however, is approximately 70 miles east in Rochester, Minnesota. Soldier's Field Memorial Park is truly a beautiful and dignified tribute to those who have fallen and answered the call during times of conflict from southeastern Minnesota. I have a personal connection to this memorial. It's walkway is lined with pavers with the names of Servicemen and women, along with their branch of service, rank, dates of service, campaigns, and dates of service. I have many friends honored here, as well as my grandpa, Dad, a Lieutenant, several NCOs, and, to my humble surprise, myself. My parents purchased a paver for me while I was in Iraq. On the granite wall, the names of the fallen are inscribed, listed by conflict, alphabetically, by year. On the perimeter of the memorial are various pieces of military equipment, including an Iraqi anti-aircraft gun that my former Company, the 79th MP, captured in the First Gulf War. When I visit this memorial, I feel very grounded, all at once connected with the past, comfortable in the present, and at peace with the future of this nation. Like so many of us we to along with that brave soul incased in that tomb will slip off into obscurity and in time be forgotten but our tomb or urn will have a name and possibly a rank and service attached but this one Carrie's many names! The names of those that never returned or found! So there they lay guarded by the best of the best. never to be forgotten or slip into obscurity as long as this country stands. When one sees little flags flying on the graves of veterans there is a larger one flying for those that never came back that signed and honoured the contract to protect and serve this country payable up to your health and very life and to this day in a Uniform or not, I will always salute you for your service and thank you for a job well done, to you and yours GI!
