It was my favorite before I joined the Army in 76, and has been since then. When I turned 50, I had my first son name Jonathan, I use to sing that song to him to put him to sleep. He's 4 years old now and every so often I do sing it with him. While we were sailing across the Indian Ocean, after PTing and finally having our shower time we heard from a nearby berthing area an offensive sound playing. Someone from another platoon was playing late 90's boy band pop music.

While preparing to shower we heard this and decided to counter it with the only song our entire platoon and our friends from the platoon that the offending music was coming from. We started singing the live version of "Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places" (the live version because we included the mysterious 3rd verse). That sing a long was one of the lingering memories of the deployment and with some of our misadventures it was fitting.
Response by Cpl Ray Fernandez made Nov 15 at 2013 4:49 PM 2013-11-15T16:49:58-05:00 2013-11-15T16:49:58-05:00 SGT Dan Knispel 6717

I'm not sure if you can actually call it a true military song, there are no lyrics for starters, but whenever I hear "Fanfare for the Common Man" by Arron Copeland I can help but be moved. It was in the Movie Midway. If you close your eyes while hearing it you can see why it is a great theme. You can almost see the Carriers and the planes taking off. And the battle that takes place that turned the tide in the Pacific. A great song and a great movie about our dark days leading up that tremendous victory. John Williams would do other military themes, and of course we all know his most famous themes that he wrote. I joined the Army to be different and to be my own person. After enlisting in 76, I found that the Army songs were long and dull and disappointing...made for marching in parades....the cassons go rolling along... when I was in I never learned all the words because it wasnt taught nor were they integrated into Army life, during my time in. When I was stationed in Germany, 78-80, AFRTS would broadcast the Big Band music. Glenn Miller was one of my favs, as his songs were part of Army life even in the 70s... and a great morale booster during WWII. After the Vietnam War, the Army had a confidence problem amonst other things while the Marines stayed the same since 1775, IMO. Needless to say in several assignments I was attached and assigned, Marine Detachments were present. My son is a Marine since 2007. Response by SSG Mike Angelo made Apr 8 at 2014 1:41 AM 2014-04-08T01:41:10-04:00 2014-04-08T01:41:10-04:00 CPT Private RallyPoint Member 97106

Creed- bullet
Ffdp- far from home
Billy Bragg- Tender comrade

Some of my favs Response by CPT Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 8 at 2014 10:32 PM 2014-04-08T22:32:18-04:00 2014-04-08T22:32:18-04:00 CSM Private RallyPoint Member 97224

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEcpwSenouQ

one of the best ever

Iron Maiden - Aces High - Official Video

Iron Maiden - Aces High - Official Video Content owner: Sony Music Entertainment Winston Churchill: " We shall go on to the end. Hero of war mostly I would think, but being a member of the uniformed service isn't always pretty, and I really love how it's depicted in this song. Zzyzx Rd, although I don't believe is a "military" song, depicts the military life so beautifully "I get to go home in one week, but I'm leaving home in 3 weeks, they throw me a bone just to pick me dry..." For example. I've always correlated it with the moments of homesick all of us feel from time to time. Being a Boston girl, I have a love for the Murphy's on principle alone, but this version is just so beautiful. Again, a darker side of the military song.
