What's your favorite military weapon?

What is your favorite military weapon you've ever used. It can be because of its lethality or just because it made you want get up and yell "MURICA". Keep it within the military arsenal though. It can be anywhere from a K-Bar to an A-10. But you yourself have to have used it or shot it.

My favorite weapon that I have ever used is the M134 Minigun. If you're ever in doubt unload massive amounts of freedom on your enemies.

My favorite military weapon while I served was the M14. I was threatened with courts martial if I didn't turn it in while in Vietnam. I finally turned it in on the day I got on the airplane to leave. I used it again when I served on the honor guard detail at Ft. Carson and again with the Army Marksmanship Team.

I qualified expert with grenades and the M203. I rocked that weapon! If I could've brought it home with me after I got out, I would've. I had fun doing door gunner with the 60 cal, but that was only in practice runs. There are plenty of other weapons I wished I had the opportunity to handle. However, the 203 was what I specialized in and I was great at it. Hooah!

3 inch 50 caliber rapid fire dual purpose twin mount. 45 rounds per minute per gun. Train and elevation 15 degrees per second. -15 to 85 degrees elevation. 14,000 yards effective range surface, 10,000 yards anti air....... Obsolete, but awesome!

LAMPS MK3 Weapons System. As an ASTAC in the Navy, it was a very useful when conducting conducting surface warfare or antisubmarine warfare missions. CIWS (Closed-In Weapons System) for point-defense. MK 41 VLS, which can launch SAMs and Tomahawks, Mk54/62 5" gun, and the EA-6B Prowler. Outside of the Navy, I would say seeing the AC-130 Gunship in action while I was TAD to a special forces unit in Iraq.

M3 Submachine Gun. I was made safety officer on the .45 range for the Battalion in Germany in 1973. Was given a M1911 and a M3 and 10,000 rounds for battalion personnel to come and shoot. One person came and fired about 20 rounds with the M1911. I spent the rest of the day firing about 5000 rounds with the grease gun. My driver/RTO loaded magazines for me. One of my more rewarding days in the service.

The closest one with lots of ammo, but if forced to choose, I would say the 25mm chain gun on a Bradley for a crew served weapon. Personal weapon would be an M16/203. Again, with lots of ammo.

As an officer my issue was always a pistol. If a fight ever comes down to me and my pistol to tip the balance, we are in serious trouble, and I'm good with a pistol.

I like the idea that company grade officers carry the current service rifle the platoon is carrying, but with nothing but tracers so they can use it as a pointer.

Otherwise, my mameluke or an e-tool with the edges combat sharp will do just fine.

the M-2 .50 Cal machine gun. When I was in Airborne school, there was a kid, a track mechanic (I asked), who told me that he wanted to fire an M-2 from the hip. I first explained to him that there was a dual trigger in the back. After he stated that he would tie them together, I explained to him that he would be flying backwards about 15' before he hit the ground. When he asked why, I said "there is a reason they only mount them on 11 ton tracks and ground tripod mounts. The recoil" This kid couldnt have weighed more than 130lbs, tops.

My all time favorite Military Weapon? Common. Friggin'. Sense. Common sense tells you to over-prepare for anything you might run into. Common sense tells you that if it looks like an idea place for an ambush, your enemy has had the same thought and it probably IS. Common sense tells you to carry more ammunition than you think you'll need. Common sense tells you to keep the freqs and callsigns for your CAS and Arty support handy. See? Common sense should rule the day! Its a pity so few use it.

Few things sound better in a firefight than the M2 .50 cal. machine gun opening up. One of the biggest morale boosters on the battlefield! For us that is. You'll have to ask the enemy how it made them feel...if you can find any left.

SFC Private RallyPoint Member - While I could say 1911, M16, S&W Mk22 Mod 0 "Hush Puppy", Heckler & Koch Mk 23 Mod 0, Steyer SSG 69 (my personally preferred stand off weapon) - because you want me to choose one favorite military weapon - I would have to say C4/Semtex for flexibility. You can use it for everything - from warming your hands and cooking dinner - to make large shaped charge penetrators when moulded around a big kitchen funnel etc. While small arms have discrete stand off messaging value - as in a broken windshield at 600-800 meters downrange says don't mess with my aircraft today - nothing sends a message like C4 - short of a fast mover, gunship, or bomber. My fav weapon was the 8 inch Howitzer. It was the most powerful weapon I fired. It was self propelled so we were able to set up quickly not like the towed 155 MM or the 105 MM.

I loved that weapon. Fire until barrel gets hot and pop it off and put on another. I like firing it at night with every third or so rounds was a tracer. Just follow them until you hit your target.

While google refers to the weapon below as a MG-74, I got to shoot the German MG-3 on the tripod below. If you look closely in both picture you will see a periscope attached to the Tri-pod. This was so German infantry could be below the sandbag and still engage attacking troops without exposing themselves. The scope in question as I recall was made by Zeiss. It took the American military some 70 years, and millions of dollars to come with the CROWS system. I submit the Germans were the real inventors of remote gun systems. If you look closely there is a device that goes to the trigger to fire it, without having your hand exposed.

I was an M60E3 gunner for many years, while most cursed the weapon, I learned to employ it in the same manner an artist employs a brush. When on a range, I’d make extra money betting on how many targets I could knock down and with how many rounds. My K-bar was my second favorite and still sits next to my bed waiting for action again.

That's a hard one, I liked the Hog (M- 60 MG) and the Ma Duce, and was proficient with both. The M-2 however, is really one hell of a weapon (Must be, been in continuous service since 1929), it has the power, reach and great versatility for a big girl and is very dependable in the dirtiest conditions if given at the very least a quick whip and lubrication of it's internal operating parts that move against one another. Over all, yes, this is or should be a no brainer, any weapon that functions and is capable of enabling me to execute the mission is my favorite weapon. As for my favorite weapon not used by me or anyone that was in my platoon, that beautiful 30 mike, mike GOA on the A-10. Favorite just based on it's shear spectacle and holy f--kin s--t factor, the C- 130 (Spooky) gunship, these last 3 always made me so damned glad I was on our side whenever I saw them clean the gene pool.

When I was worked with the Italian Army, they would bring out their ancient American made quad 50's for field exercises. When I worked with the Germans hands down the German MG-3 in ,308. Complete with the sausage grinder ammo belt reloaded, and tripod with periscope device. A better machine gun I have never used.

The 1911A1 .45acp. Because clogged with salt water, sand, no lubricants at all ,( having been underwater for at least 45 minutes), drug through the surf, it fired first time, right out of the holster. I did bn ot have to "clear it", work the slide, wipe it down. etc.
I pulled it out and it fired 6 times without failure of any kind. I dropped the mag and slapped in another and repeated the process again.

Mine isn’t very flashy or unusual, but it is awesome to me. M-60 gas operated, belt fed fun! (Obviously I never saw combat with it or I’m sure “fun” would not be my description.)
It taught me to never seek cover behind a pine tree... it can cut down a 12-14” pine tree as it’s 7.62 NATO round passes right through. It can hit a target at 1100 meters with ease... if the gunner is any good. However, our full battalion and its support was on the firing line in fresh dug foxholes for a live fire exercise and we all opened fire (with command authority) after a large white tail buck appeared in the middle of the impact zone. There was no evidence that our M-60 or anyone else hit that target as it bounded off the range. I was not the gunner. It was on that range at night when I first saw a red hot M-60 barrel. I could see the bullets pass through the barrel as dark spots .

During my time in the Army, Iwas issued four different weapons, and actually fired three of them - the M-14 rifle, the M-1911 pistol, and the M-2 Carbine. I loved the M-2. It would empty a 30 round "banana" clip in about three seconds when the selector switch was on "full auto," (Well, it seemed like it did.)

I liked to carry the M203. Not only do you have the benefit of the grenade launcher but I could fire the M16 better with the extra weight. Not saying would be that way for everyone, I prefer a heavier stick to shoot pool as well. That was way back in the 70s, don't know if they still use the M203.

I have to say my favorite weapon was the M-14. As a Marine during the Viet Nam Era, I qualified with the rifle twice and it was accurate, robust, and I loved it. I must say a close second was the venerable .45 Auto 19ll handgun. I still carry one. Although I carried the Beretta Model 92 9 mm in combat, I would have preferred the .45 auto. I would be remiss if I didn't mention my favorite knife, the Marine Kabar...! Great question! Jon

M249 SAW
I have an (apparently) oddly-shaped face that always made it hard for me to get a good, consistent "cheek-stock weld" on the M16A2. The SAW accommodated my face quite nicely and was comfortable to fire. Additionally, when using the bipod legs, steady-hold was taken care of and I could REALLY shoot, then. It was lightweight and the armorer gave me a sling for a 60 or a 240B, (so pretty big for a M249) which made it really easy to move it behind me for getting in or out of the back of a 5-ton or an LTMV. You absolutely had to take the ammo out of the 200-round plastic drum, however, and transfer it to 100-round canvas bags with the zippers or you'd have several problems related to those plastic drums to contend with (and never bother with trying to fire a box magazine loaded with 5.56 from an M16 or M4 through your SAW - in my experience, that was instantaneous one-shot-wonder no matter what you did to the gas pressure setting.) But firing link from the 100 round bags, it was reliable, accurate, and easy. (For that matter, I think they ought to put folding bipods on M4s as well because it really does make it easier to be accurate from a supported firing position.) When they took away my SAW and gave me some stripes, I liked the M4 better than the old M16A2, but I missed my SAW. I really liked that SAW. Now they issue them with Aimpoints or ACOGs and that must be pretty amazing.

THE M1 CARBINE, I BOUGHT MINE IN 1962 FROM THE NRA/DCM FOR $20, IT'S SIMPLE, LIGHT AND A GOOD BRUSH GUN. MANY TIMES IN VIETNAM, WHEN WE HAD THE DIRTY AMMO BUT DIDN'T KNOW IT, I WOULD HAVE TRADED IN MY M16 FOR THE M1 CARBINE IN A HEARTBEAT. Sometimes I wonder if it existed, but intelligence can be an effective weapon. I don't mean Military Intelligence (they do get a lot of good information but they don't like to share well). No, I mean just plain old smarts! Nothing fancy, just think things through, be aware of surroundings, and use what weaponry is available to the best of ability.

I have a soft spot for "thumper" the M-79 40mm Grenade Launcher. Just a simple, oversized, break action shotgun...plus you got to carry the 1911 .45 ACP. Whatever weapon you carry or use, YOU must be the best at using it. Practice, be quick, accurate, and lethal.

It has to be the Great Highland Bagpipes. This "instrument of war" struck fear and trepidation into the hearts of the enemy while simultaneously embuing the Scottish infantry with courage and zeal for battle. There are few force multipliers to compare with the skirl of the pipes. The bagpipes were so effective, says folklore, that the British government banned their use in Scotland following the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. My favorite military weapon was the M1 rifle. It weighed 9.5lbs. was accurate to 500yds. Throw it in the mud stomp on it and it would still fire. made a good club in an emergency We carried 80rds of 30 cal. ammo and could carry more bandoliers slung on our shoulder. I also was issued an M14 later the stock had a weak point where the ammo clip was placed. you carried 4. 20rd magazines and 1 in the weapon. 100 rds of 7.62 ammo. They had to be kept clean. I always thought the AR 15 looked like a toy gun. Never carried one. Semper fi.

When I took Basic Combat Training in the summer of 1972, we trained initially on the M-14, and then moved to the M-16. I LOVED the M-14 rifle, it was a beautifully made weapon, in fact it was made too well and cost too much for use as an infantryman's weapon. The .30 caliber round had some real knock-down power, its only fault was that it didn't tumble like the .223 round from the M-16. The .30 caliber M-14 round just tended to punch through the body. The M-14 was a real rifle, similar to the M-1 sporting version that I had used to hunt deer growing up, with a real wooden stock that could deliver a knock-out blow. The M-14 was not the plastic toy that we characterized the first M-16's to be. Some of my colleagues in Basic had actually broken their M-16 delivering a butt stroke in practicing combatives. Most of us thought of the M-16 as a Mattel toy, but of course, it wasn't. But I just loved the M-14. And also I loved the M-79 grenade launcher. I was very accurate with the M-79, and could bullseye truck tires at 300-400 yards with that thing. Load that up with an anti-personnel round and you had a fearsome shotgun. Great weapon.

1911A, no contest. 2nd is M1 Garand. I also get slobbery and sentimental over the classic Mk21 torpoedo. The loving endorsements of the M60 and M2 remind me of a bumper sticker: "Happiness is a belt-fed weapon".

I worked recon in Vietnam and I carried a CAR-15. Having a collapsible stock in triple canopy jungle made a big difference. Another weapon we configured was to cut several inches off the barrel and stock of an M-79 and loading it with canister rounds was great at close range to break contact.

My favorite weapon is the M110A2 Self Propelled 8inch Howitzer. It fires a 200 lbs projectile over 20 miles away and is nuclear capable.
