Able to witness the mighty Iowa in NYC in July 4th 1986 and in New Orleans in Feb 1989 for a liberty call. This was less than two months before the turret explosion. Took the older picture aboard USCGC Gallatin in NY harbor as part of the OpSail86 Statue of Liberty celebration. Gallatin served as the parade command platform. I took the newer photo as part of a security detail aboard a 41ft utility boat escorting the battleship from Southwest Pass to downtown New Orleans.

During an insanely intense moment while my ship, MIDWAY, was trying to escape from Typhoon Rose in the summer of 1971, and as we were also trying to exit the South China Sea and the coasts of North Vietnam, Hainan Tao, and Southern China, a picture was taken of me and our Skipper, William Harris, Jr., as we bent over the navigation chart in the Bridge, all shrouded in the red light of nighttime operations at sea. The actual picture is in a box somewhere in the house, garage, or barn...I’m not sure which.

There was a photo I would have liked to have gotten.... a base Photo specialist took it.. we’d been in the middle of a ORI
and he took pics of us working .. after he took it I asked him his name and a phone number... a few days later I called and he’d been TDY’d to our base from FLA. I gave the references he gave to get a copy of the pic.. I think the Airman on the end
Didn’t want to be bothered.., He asked if it was mission essential.. it wasn’t. Nd I had to be honest.. it wasn’t ..I tried another approach ...that our DH Supervisor wanted it.. the Airman hung up on me..
So I got him to call .. A SSGT. answered..
He informed our DHNCOIC that because the ORI had been ongoing, the photo was restricted because of the date... it read like a line of poppycock.. But could of been true.. I’ll try again later I thought...
Time goes on... the file sent to archives..
