I remember getting together with the entire family. We would watch the parade and football. When it was time to eat, around 4 pm, we would gather around the table, say grace and pass the food around. When we all finished that, we would go around and tell everyone what we're thankful for and comment when needed. We would have the head of the table, which is the fater, give a toast. Then we would eat and enjoy each other's company.

The day before Thanksgiving going to city mission to help deep fry turkeys for homeless families. We return the next day to serve and fellowship with the folks that come in for hot Thanksgiving meal. Many of the homeless folks are veteran's which of course is near to my heart. We then gather as a family to participate in our immediate families Thanksgiving celebration. A few years ago year we purchased a white linen tablecloth and had the family write something they were thankful for on the tablecloth. We then have it dry-cleaned and use it the next year and again allow folks to share if they like. The rest of the evening consists of board games, snacks and discussing how we can serve our community for Christmas. Doing these things as a family not only helps others but it models the values and sense of charity and values we want our young family members to model when they become adults.

After getting out of the military, my family “adopted” several enlisted soldiers each year who were unable to go home for Thanksgiving. We fed them, loved on them and gave them gift cards. We made them part of our family and thanked them for their service.

My favorite Thanksgiving Tradition is making my Dad's Mother's recipe for Polish Cookies. They are made with Prune, Nut, Lekvar, poppiseed, and sprinkled with powered sugar. Well for me its spending tome with family when i was in the Navy my room mate and i held a huge thanksgiving for a bunch of the single guys in the barracks we where living off base so we did a turkey ham potatoes corn the whole thing and had like 20 guys and a couple women over we ate drank and partied untill the wee hours it was a blast thats my favorite

If you asked us when I was 10 or younger, my answer would’ve been getting together, my family, playing with my cousins all day, long, and talking to my grandparents. Today, many years later, my favorite thing I would have to say, is seeing how much my grandchildren have changed from last year. Sweet potatoes with marshmallows, and just making my family happy, since coming home I have lost all interested in holidays, and really any gatherings of people, so I take a few anxiety pills and gut it out. I usually make it about 40 minutes before I am out the door, but I try for my mom's sake, she says the last time she has seen me (the old me) was right before I deployed, but that I never came home, but I am trying at least for her I am...I don't know how to get better anymore though, so I fear this is just how my life is going to be from now on, anyways sorry I know this was supposed to be about Thanksgiving I guess I won't win that gift card since I missed the mark, ok well if your still reading sorry for rambling!

My thanksgiving tradition is actually cooking old family meals with my daughter. It’s making homemade foods I can teach her that my mom and grandpa taught me to cook as they are no longer with us. Oh how we miss them. But happy I have my daughter her husband and my two grandsons left.

The bowling alley was the only kid friendly place he could take us. A family tradition was born.....My siblings and I always manage to bowl...no matter where we are! Great memories!

When my wife and I got married 59 years ago we were poor as church mice, but totally in love and very happy. Every few months, we would go to visit my wife's parents who lived 100 miles away. Whenever we visited (winter, spring, summer, or fall) my mother in law served turkey for dinner. Why? Because it was cheap! She had grown up during the depression and I fully understood why she was a penny pincher (although she and my father in law had lots of money). Years passed and we grew more financially solvent and even though we still occasionally enjoy turkey, our traditional Thanksgiving meal became (an still is) a standing rib beef roast, with Irish potatoes, broccoli, a congealed salad, fresh baked rolls, and pumpkin cheese cake. We're thankful that Granny taught us to be frugal and we have been, but Thanksgiving, sorry we're thankful that we can enjoy our own tradition.

My FAVORITE Thanksgiving has ALWAYS been to travel to see my family for the holidays. From being in the service, I don't get a chance to continue to be with them, and to see them, as much as I have when I was younger. Keeping up with all in the family and all new events with my family, like I used to, become much more difficult to do, and these things don't begin to resonate and hit your heart strings and your memory, until you start getting older and becoming an adult yourself. For example, like, to keep up with who in the family that's graduated, or who got their first job, who got their first boyfriend/girlfriend, who is starting their first year of college, who is now having their first baby, etc. When you are young, going to family's house, riding in the backseat, your just a kid, living and loving life! As you get older and become the adults that we end up being, it can be something as 'simple' as me remembering getting in that backseat, to be on my way to Uncle Willie's house, just so I can be with my extended "family!" And for me, if I did not have those cherishing times and those fond memories to last me throughout my career thus far, I really don't know if I would be here today, having gone through some of the things that I have in the service, yet, I am so blessed to still be of sound, mind and body. And I am SO glad, happy and fortunate to be able to be here today, to simply reminisce on those memories past, with my absolutely beautiful family!

Every Thanksgiving that I can ever remember my brothers, sister and I would anxiously await to sit down at the table together with mom and dad it was always so special and included a special tradition with our meal. We had one of those 70’s hanging lights with a chain intertwined around the cord that went to the outlet and in one of the links of the chain was a wishbone, the wishbone from the previous year’s Thanksgiving dinner. After we gave thanks, enjoyed a delicious meal and cleared our plates… we’d sit in anticipation of who’s turn it was to make a wish and what the wish would be…dad would take the wishbone down and two of us would get our turn to make a wish, mom would go in the kitchen and come back with a fresh wishbone from the turkey we just ate and hang it in a link on the chain for next year. We’d all sit at the table talking and laughing trying to figure out the wish. I’ve carried on that tradition first with my children and now my grandchildren. It warms my heart to see the excitement and togetherness it brings my family over something so little and simple as a wishbone…This year we had thanksgiving a few days early it was my youngest grandson’s turn and he had me do it with him…for the very first time in the 50plus years I’ve done this the wishbone split perfectly in half leaving us both with an exact equal part of the wishbone…quite a conversation and laughter for hours over that one! we are truly blessed! We start the day with homemade buttermilk biscuits, sausage gravy, and eggs while we sit around the tv watching the Macys parade. Then before the big dinner later that day we sit around the table, and each person says at least one thing that they are thankful for. Then we say the blessing and eat, nap, eat, nap, eat, nap, until bedtime……….

On the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, my church holds a special service. In this service we are all given an opportunity to express anything we desire to give God thanks for. Then at the end of this, we take prayer request and have prayer for each request individually. This is what Thanksgiving is truly about.

My favorite tradition was with my mother having my sister and myself in the kitchen learning everything's given basically how to bake pies how to cook the ham you know how to cut the turkey and it was a wonderful experience it was a good time for us to get to you know get to know my mother or her life experiences and she raises use a single parent. So it just again is everything Thanksgiving from when I was five up until at least 17 it was a good you know a good way to interact with no drama and my mom has since then passed away and I miss talking to her asking questions and I wish I had an opportunity to show her how good I enhanced my cooking skills me and my sister is everything Thanksgiving and I was cutting up stuff vegetables and getting the butter out the freezer and freezing pans Etc I sure miss her thank you

My family tradition is to have each person at the table to state the things they are thankful for and why they are thankful. Stating it out loud helps make it more meaningful for the person saying it and those hearing it feel needed and loved!

My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is having thanksgiving dinner with the family and this year we heard about the NJ Coast Guard recruiting base in Cape May NJ Has Operation Fireside, they ask volunteers to bring home Coast Guard Recruits for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We brought home three of them this year for the first time and it was such a delight listening to their stories about boot camp and their personal lives we intend to continuing doing this every year if anybody within 1 hour of the base wants to do this just call the coast guard station. I wish other recruiting bases did this.

Having everyone write down what they are greatful for on a small slip of paper, then wrapping that paper in parchment paper and then wrapping all of it into a Cresent roll before its baked. After they are baked and on the dinner table each person who grabs one will get to read what someone else is greatful for. Every time we do it, it is so much fun to watch the reactions of the ones opening their roll in order to reveal the hearts of greatfulness that others have. (Colossians 3:15-17)

We didn’t have a lot of traditions growing up, but when my nieces and nephews were little, we always made a point to go around and tell each other what we were thankful for which I know a lot of people do but then we would also say ways that we could do better in our lives, ways we could make other people thankful to have us in their lives. My favorite tradition is eating all the foods that I only eat once a year. I literally have no shame on Thanksgiving, therfore I wear my elastic band pants bravely. This year I gained 4lbs from the holiday dinner and it's leftovers; 4LBS! I'm a solid 136.4 lbs now! Lol. I'm just thankful I have food on my table because there was a time when I didn't have food or money to feed my family and several Thanksgiving holidays when I was homeless.

I like cooking the meal for my family. I get up every hour to baste my turkey while it cooks on lowest setting that my oven will go. The turkey comes out so juicy and perfect that everyone loves it so much that there are barely any leftovers.. it makes me feel good to know I can still cook a good meal!

In my family we have a Thanksgiving tradition of each cooking a "side dish" to go with the main meal
of turkey, ham or roast in order to contribute to our family meal while at the same time helping my
mother in reducing the number of items she used to be responsible for making. We all became known
for cooking a particular item very well and look forward to having and sharing each others dishes.

We used to play BINGO after the meal at Thanksgiving. It was pretty funny to watch some people get mad that they weren't winning and would blame others.

We started a Thanksgiving breakfast tradition with our own kids of Pancakes and Parades. When I was a little kid, my grandma in Chattanooga used to make us homemade waffles and we we'd watch the Macy's Parade. My waffles are not like Grandma's but I make tasty flapjacks!

Every year our Thanksgiving supper is chicken nuggets, instant potatoes and Stovetop stuffing. This was what my wife and I had our first year we were married, when we couldn't afford more. So every year we have it to remind us where we started, and remind us how much we have to be thankful for.

It's a new tradition that started last year where we "tailgate" a few hours before dinner by hanging out in the back yard around the fire pit, steam oysters and watch football.
