If have a fairly generic routine for myself, but if I want to really push myself or initiate a gut-check, I ruck up, and hit the road. I like long trail runs better than roads, but the weather in the midwest hasn't really been all that cooperative for outdoor runs as of late. In the past three years I've run the Soldier Field 10 miler in Chicago (it ends on the 50 yard line of Soldier Field), one trail marathon, three trail 50k's, one 50 miler. I'm doing road marathons this year (two signed up and paid for so far). As has been mentioned by others, I run in part because I like to eat. Signing up for races helps keep me motivated to keep getting out there. Not only do you get a better "understanding" of your rifle, but minor resistance and a lot of slow movement or low weight/high rep yields endurance. The trainee will be able to wield that rifle that much better!

It's also low impact, which is good for my since I've torn my rotator cuffs and I have some minor to major back problems. As a teen, when I was playing basketball all the time, I'd strive for leg speed and power. When I needed to be able to do more in full kit with less effort, I'd do more weighted calisthenics, especially pulling movements. Now that I'm getting closer to 30, I'm doing more and new stuff for flexibility. Meanwhile, I've always been big on improving functional strength.
