I PCS to Ft. Leavenworth in June 2021. I’ve honestly got 50/50 reviews. What should I expect being in a MP Battalion. Most likely I’ll be working in the prison, wondering how is that like and the area and units as a whole

Cooks are like Medics. You can be assigned anywhere. The thing to do is see if you can get ahold of someone there in personnel and try and get a certain unit.

I was stationed here in 1993 as a SFC and I couldn’t find one enlisted guy who thought it would be a good assignment and every Officer said is was the best assignment in the world. The Officers were right but i was married with school age children and when you couple the schools with the cost of living it was an easy decision to retire here after 5 years. If I would have been single, I might not have felt the same way, Kansas City and Lawrence (Town where KU is located are both about an hour away and they are the closet entertainment districts. Since there are relatively few enlisted soldiers at Ft Leavenworth, my experience is you will be expected to be more independent vs soldiers in traditional units. I wish I could tell you what duty will be like for you. There is one consolidated dining facility that is staffed by contractors with a couple of NCOs overseeing the contract. When I eat there, I always see guards eating there, too. I always thought the prisoners were fed by contractors; however, it is possible you will be cooking at one of the two confinement facilities. If you are single, there is one consolidated single soldiers quarters for all of the units. It was built in the early 2000s. Aside, from the corrections mission, the rest of the installation is centered around education, MAJs attend ILE and Army University is headquartered here and Army training doctrine, CTC oversight, Mission Command and Army Lessons Learned . The Fort’s motto is the intellectual center of the Army and the Garrison’s motto is best little hometown in the Army. Both mottos appropriately describe the forts approach for their Soldiers.

Be professional with all you do and act. Even though you are a CPL, you might be overseeing prisoners. Embrace and hone your skills working in a large kitchen with multiple people. Work on being able to multi-task and produce quality even thought they you might be in a prison. After all, they are still human beings. Respect goes a long way in this type of environment
