What should the Army posts that are currently named after Confederate generals be renamed?

As part of the FY 2021 NDAA, there are 10 U.S. Army posts, currently named after men who were Confederate generals during the Civil War, which are required to be renamed by the end of 2023.

The posts being renamed are:

Camp Beauregard, LA
Fort Polk, LA
Fort Benning, GA
Fort Gordon, GA
Fort Bragg, NC
Fort A.P. Hill, VA
Fort Lee, VA
Fort Pickett, VA
Fort Rucker, AL
Fort Hood, TX

This post is not to debate the merits of whether or not they should be renamed (it's happening). I'm curious as to what you think the specific posts should be renamed and why?

My personal opinion is:

Fort Gordon, GA - should be someone of note from the Signal Corps
Fort Lee, VA - should be someone of note from the Quartermaster Corps

Fort Benning, GA - should be named in honor of GEN Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., Infantryman, CENTCOM Cdr 1988-1991 and Commander during the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Pretty much our last conventional war, and I think one that everyone can agree was a decisive victory.

Fort Bragg, NC - should be named in honor of GEN Matthew B. Ridgway, 82nd CG (1942-1944), XVIII Airborne Corps CDR (1944-1945), and ultimately Army Chief of Staff (1953-1955). Veteran of WWII and Korean War.

Fort Rucker, AL - should be named in honor of CW4 Michael J. Novosel (1922-2006). MoH recipient and veteran of the Army Air Corps during WWII, USAF during the Korean War, and Army Aviation during Vietnam. When he wanted to return to active duty to serve in Vietnam the USAF was over-strength LTCs so he resigned his commission and joined the Army flying as a CW2, making his way to CW4 (the most senior WO rank at the time) before retiring in 1985. His actions as a MEDEVAC pilot on 2 Oct 69 would ultimately see him receive the Medal of Honor.

Fort Hood, TX - should be named in honor of MG Robert L. Howze, first commander of 1st Cav Division and Medal of Honor recipient from the Indian Wars. Also a veteran of the Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, and WWI. Anyone stationed in the western corridor of Korea before 2005 might remember there used to be a camp named after him that was closed down during base consolidation.

I also think a post somewhere should be named in honor of GEN Patton, but not sure which might be most appropriate. The other posts that I didn't mention I have no opinion on, but curious to hear what other great leaders or military heroes might be deserving of the honor. My personal opinion is it should be someone deceased, but other than that I'm open.

I would stick with the Civil War era for continuity.
Grant, Sherman, Thomas, McPherson, Howard, Hancock, Sumner, Sheridan, Slocum, Chamberlain, Buford, Gibbon, and Warren are good possibilities, though some may already have facilities named after them that I do not remember.

Fort Bragg should be named for General Matthew Ridgeway. He commanded the XVIII Airborne Corps in World War II, and took over Korea when MacArthur was fired.
Fort Benning could be named for General Gavin who commanded the 82nd at Normandy

Well Bragg also has Longstreet which needs to be renamed as well (yes it's named for another Confederate...not because it's long) But I don't see why we shouldn't just continue with American Generals. Washington, Pulaski (not American but had an American Legion), Sherman, Wilson, Burnside, Grant, Pershing, Patton, Scott, and Greene (Nathaniel).

Not a fan fiscally, historically or philosophically. It costs money to change signage, letterhead, etc., but more than that it denigrates the memories of American soldiers once considered worthy of recognition based on region and military accomplishment. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, recognized all Confederate veterans as US veterans; this in the Lincolnian spirit of (if belated) "binding up the Nation's wounds." We heard a lot of references to Lincoln on the Senate floor recently but "malice toward none and charity to all" was not one of them. Sanitized history is not history. It is pablum. This great movement toward political correctness is a down hill slope. How do think a great many Native Americans feel about forts being named for Kit Carson, Phil Sheridan or, as in my home state of Indiana, Benjamin Harrison.

Alvin York has a VA Hospital, but I think he is definitely worthy of an Army base.

I am also very surprised we don't have anything named after Audie Murphy (aside from SAMC).

And if part of the impetus is to attempt to "be better" regarding historic racism, maybe renaming Fort Bragg to Fort Robinson after the first black CG of the 82nd and first black 4-star in the Army.

I would say one for SMA McKinney, as well, but.... the way his career ended isn't something we really want to highlight or glorify.

Ft Lee — Ft Ann Dunwoody. GEN Dunwoody is the first female O-10 in the Army and any US military service. She is a prominent logistician and former AMC Commander.

Ft Bragg —. Ft Pope. 1LT Pope was killed in an aircraft accident in 1919. Pope AFB is named for him.

Ft Rucker — Ft Ed W Freeman. MAJ Freeman won the Medal of Honor as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam

Ft Hood — Ft Custer. General George Armstrong Custer was a West Point graduate, outstanding cavalry leader during the Civil War and the Indian wars. Died with his troops at the Little Big Horn

Ft Benning — Ft Dwight Eisenhower. General Eisenhower spent WWI with infantry, Engineer, and tank units doing training. During WWII he rose to five star rank and Supreme Allied Commander. President of US.

I had an idea relating to the statues (please bear with me). Keep the statues, but put up another statue of the Union General (the Confederate statues are all GO's) who defeated him. Associated with both statues should be a placard describing the battle in which the Confederate General was defeated by the Union General.

Riffing off that idea, how about this? Keep the name of the installation, but hyphenate it with the name of the Union General who defeated him.

I think it is a crying shame to alter, rewrite, or disregard our history.
Yes, these were Confederate Generals. Both sides in the war that ended 160 years ago, fought for a cause they believed in. Some were distinguished graduates of West Point. Some were "regular folks" that proved to be brilliant tacticians in battle. That can be said for both sides.
If some liberal group decides five or ten years from now that they dislike something else about the military or the ground the post stands on, will we rename them yet again? The Civil War is over - it's time to move on.

First of all, no one would have ever known that the bases were named after Confederate Generals unless some one mentioned it and stated they should be offended by that. Same with certain government and college buildings and I suspect the majority of statues.

That being said, there are many MOH recipients. Surely there is one from each area that has a military base that will need a new name.

I think the Army has sufficient Medal of Honor winners to name their forts and installations after without having to resort to those who have taken up arms against this nation. Given an hour, I can find a Medal of Honor winner for each whose home state matches the location or who served with distinction at the installation. Personally, considering their contributions to the State of Texas, I think Ft Hood should be renamed for a MoH winner from the 9th or 10th Cavalry.

They shouldn’t be renamed. The posts and the personnel are named for are part of the American history. They are as part of American history as the gangsters of the 20-30s, Charles Manson, Jim Jones, the imprisonments of Japanese American citizens, the requirement of Italian American citizens to register with the FBI annually during WWII if they were in technical trades, and the dropping of the atomic bomb twice during WWII. Our forefathers were not perfect men and women and this nation continues to evolve. We need to teach history, when possible, in the context of the times when it occurred.

In school HISTORY was my favorite subject I don't believe in changing it for any reason because if you give your reason to change it thousands will give you ligitimate reasons why your idea is a bad one. It once was said "The further you can see behind you the further you can see ahead". History teaches us the things that were successful and the things that were wrong. Adolph Hitler once said "He who rules the young rules the world". When you start changing history where does it end? Abraham Lincoln freed the black man from horrific conditions that went unchecked because they were considered less than human. Even though their sin pigmentation is darker their blood is still red and their kidney or liver just may save your life one day or visa versa. There is no difference between a black man and a white man, organically, the differance is in our ignorance because a black man does not know what it's like to be white as much as a white man dose'nt know what it's like to be black. At a cellular level we are the same as we are in God's eye. I love the post from SGT Jinger Jarrett she really hits the nail on the head and makes some great points.
History needs to be left where it belongs, IN THE PAST. And I know that I did not answer this soldiers question because he was talking about confirmed law something that has already been litigated and passed as confirmed law. I guess I just had to get it out. WE ARE MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERANT!!!! And that is a fact!

Fort Rucker should be renamed after one of the Warrant Officer aviators that received the Medal of Honor thus tying to the two primary things Fort Rucker does: train Warrant Officers and train aviators.
Fort Novosel would be my vote but there are a few others along with several enlisted soldiers and regular officers that would also be good choices.

Other training bases should be named after soldiers that represent one of the MOS that is trained there and even better if they are from the area. For Benning's replacement I'm sure that there are many infantry MOH or other valorous award recipients from Georgia. Non training bases would do well to be renamed along the same lines: someone local and a MOH or other valorous award recipient.

What difference does it really make? I’ve been stationed, or trained, at many of those Army posts and, I didn’t know or care who the posts were named after. They were all very skilled American military leaders whether they chose to fight for the north or south. That’s good enough for me. I think it’s a colossal waste of time and money to change the names of these posts just because some “woke” crybabies have their panties in a wad. And, I’m running a special deal today so, I’m not even going to charge you my usual fee of $0.02 for that.

I don't know why they feel the need to rename them, since I think most of those posts have created enough of their own history to overshadow those they were named for. Whenever I think of Benning, it's not some semi-obscure Confederate general that I am reminded of, but the home of the Infantry. If PC demands it, maybe for Benning, Fort Bradley, since Omar Bradley commanded the Infantry School early in WW2. But I am sure they will be renamed by some politician who never wore a uniform, with no appreciation of history.

The Army had always been about tradition, honor, and service. My opinion is to not change a thing, and to hell with the cancel culture who wants to re-write history, and try to change the past. If we allow these posts that WE have sweated, bled, trained , and prepared for war at.

If we allow this what will they become. What “social justice icon” gets a fort named after them?

I believe Fort Bragg should be re-named for the Union general who commanded the Iron Brigade, and later became a Democratic congressman: Edward S. Bragg. Shouldn't be much controversy there, and we would save a lot on sign painting costs.

How about not trying to change history. It is what it is whether good ,bad or indifferent. Changing names is not going to change history. I get some people are offended but if I changed everything that offended me who knows where the hell I would be.

I would rename the posts after servicemembers born or resided within the state prior to their death who were awarded Distinguished Service Cross or above.

Forts Crybaby, Snowflake, Milksop, Wimpy, Lightloafers, and Inguina come to mind. Sadly, we just might see some of these. My Christ, these posts were named after men of accomplishment. Renaming them won't erase history, no matter how much the snowflakes, milksops or crybabies try.

Good question. It never offended me until some told me it should, and failed. That's one for thought, but I see History as written, regardless of the effects. We need to nurture it and learn.
