What should veterans put if asked if they ever registered for the draft?

Filling out applications and it asks are you registered for the draft, being a Veteran what do I put?

When asked if you registered for the draft and are a Veteran, then your answer will depend upon what effect you are trying to create:
- Smart ass. I gave at the office when I enlisted.
- Bureacratic. I was supposed to fill out two different forms? I thought the one form I filled out when I enlisted was sufficient.
- Accurate. I am a veteran who has already honorably served in our Armed Forces.
- Short. No or Yes (depending upon which is correct).
- Explanatory. Enlisting in the Armed Forces and registering for the draft are two different actions for two different purposes. Enlisting is a current issue to serve in the Armed Forces now while registering for the draft is a future issue as a contingency for possible future conflict. You would think that the right hand of government could talk with the left hand of government but that is not the case.

Cpl Michael Garrison , you can go to ssv dot gov to check on your selective service number. If you registered, you will have a number.

I would have them update their application. The proper phrase is "Selective Service". Either way, mark down yes because if you enlisted at the age of 18 you were automatically entered into the Selective Service.

I always just answer Yes, and put my selective service number if required.

So let me re-phrase the question since I got 8 or 9 yes and no's. Filling out a job application for a police department, is asks are you registered for the draft? Yes or now and then under that section is military history. That whole section is kind of confusing, because if I have served already and I'm inactive ready reserve does that count as registered for the draft?

You were supposed to register with selective service when you were 18. It's not the same as enlisting. If you register with selective service then the answer to the question on the application is yes. If you didn't register, then answer no

Not to put too fine a point on it, use the link that MSG Huffman gave you. If it gives you a number, then yes; if not, then no. Go to the post office and pick up a selective service application.

I would wager yes, because most high schools have seniors fill it out before graduating.

I was asked if I signed up for Selective Service, since it is the law.
Stated that I had.
There is no record of you signing up for Selective Service, do you want us to sign you up.
Sure.
Our records indicate that you are retired.
Yes, I am, can we continue.
Sorry since you will not sign up of Selective Service we can not continue.

I would put down no since there isn't any draft. If they say something about it then you tell them the fines points of putting the correct question on the application. Once they see you are prior service they will focus on that. The draft hasn't been around since the early '70s. The Police department is to lazy to change the wording.

I have read the responses here. I believe some are not correct. I have never registers for the draft (or with selective service)

My retirement letter says I completed 39 years and 2 days of military service.

So for me the answer would have to be no. But, if I felt the no answer would be somehow interpreted as a negative the company would probably receive a lesson on why the question is not appropriate.

Many Programs (indeed any Federal employment) tied to Federal funding require men over 18 born after 1960 answering and with my specific Program then verifying Registration through the Selective Service System.

Simply put, this only applies to men born after 1960.
