The person you really need for the job could be someone discriminated against because of choices that don’t affect job performance. Look for the problem solvers, the helpers, those who grew up with code as their first language, Covid really separated people. This is a chance to come together, work as a team, test ideas and be recognized for your accomplishments. Seeing the world is just part of it. The best part are the friends you will make, who will forever have your six. Even if 20 years go by, these friendships can be picked up through the commonality of shared experiences. Make a difference in the world, one additional note: acknowledge that sexual assault is happening and don’t sweep it under the good ole boys rug, a suicide from MST is just as dead as a death on the battlefield. If what I see on RP reflects the current military, it is obvious why no one wants to join except some legacies. I know there are some (many?) that will probably post comments along the lines of “I would never tell them to join because …” but will take the ‘debate club’ approach where I’m defending a position regardless if I agree with it or not.

It all starts with two things – having an open and honest dialogue and understanding you audience.

Millennials aren’t the future of the military, they ARE the military (about 3/4s of the military are in the Millennial generation). Generation Z are the ones that are joining now (the oldest are in their mid-20s) and to understand how you would encourage them, you have to understand their motivations and experiences.

The Gen-Z generation grew up on social media and spend an average of more than eight hours a day online. The vast majority (~70%) are focused on financial security and having a successful career and access to comprehensive healthcare is a top priority.

One part of encouragement will always be highlighting the material advantages of service, even for those that are just contemplating doing an initial enlistment and leaving the force. Educate them about the benefits and opportunities of military service, such as skills training, education assistance, and especially the comprehensive health care that comes for they and their families.

Every year we get those Personal Statement of Military Compensation (PSMC) from DFAS telling you how much your pay and compensation are worth (or you could use the Regular Military Compensation (RMC) Calculator* from DoD). I used to chuckle at all that hypothetical compensation I received until I actually started taking advantage of some. I then began to appreciate those additional items of compensation more and more.

Another is the non-material advantages. Regardless of one’s feelings towards changes that are happening in the military, the core values of the military (DoD’s core values) are still leadership, professionalism, technical know-how, duty, integrity, ethics, honor, courage, and loyalty and these are values that are consistently rated very highly as positive and important ones to Generation Z.

Yes, there is a down side of joining the military. You have to be frank in addressing their concerns and questions about military life, such as deployment, combat, family separation and eventual transition back to civilian life.

If there’s one thing Gen-Zers get high marks for, it’s being able to sense when they are being ‘sold a bill of goods’. Keep the discussion open and honest and don’t try to hide any of the ‘bad stuff’ because it might discourage them.

Military life is not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that everyone shouldn’t consider if it is right for them.
--------------------------------------
* PSMC explained - http://www.militarylifeplanning.com/much-military-pay-really-worth/
* RMC Calculator - https://militarypay.defense.gov/calculators/rmc-calculator/

How Much Is Your Military Pay Really Worth? - Military Life Planning

Ever wondered just how much your military pay & benefits are really worth? This includes competitive salaries, comprehensive healthcare coverage, housing allowances, retirement plans, and access to various support services for both service members and their families.

2. **Flexible Service Options:** Providing flexible service options can accommodate a wider range of candidates. Offering part-time or reserve opportunities, allowing for shorter enlistment contracts, and promoting opportunities for remote work or specialized training can make military service more accessible to individuals with different life circumstances and career aspirations.

3. **Educational Opportunities:** Highlighting the educational benefits of military service can attract those seeking to further their education. Programs like the GI Bill that provide financial assistance for higher education, technical training, and skill development can be emphasized to show how military service can contribute to personal and professional growth.

4. **Diverse Roles and Experiences:** Showcasing the wide array of roles within the military beyond combat can attract individuals with varying skills and interests. Engaging and informative online content, virtual tours of military facilities, and interactive experiences can provide insights into military life.

9. **Community Engagement:** Engaging with communities and schools to raise awareness about the benefits of military service and the various opportunities available can help dispel misconceptions and encourage young people to consider the armed forces as a viable career path.

10. **Transitional Support:** Assuring prospective recruits that the military offers support not only during service but also during the transition to civilian life can ease concerns about the future. Highlighting job placement assistance, resume-building workshops, and support for veterans' mental health can attract those who want to ensure a stable post-service life.

By addressing these aspects, the US military can create a more appealing and inclusive environment that attracts a diverse range of individuals who are eager to serve and contribute to the nation's defense. Why would I work for an organization that treats many like s#$t?

If you had a one-and-done, 20-year, 30-year, or 40-year career and haven't had to experience the bad, then I am happy for you. And more power to you. I have seen too many soldiers kill themselves because of treatment from "leaders" (and some behavioral health, yes). I have watched individuals blatantly harass, use derogatory terms, be openly sexist, lie on sworn statements, and purposely place the safety and health of others at risk, which was unrelated to the mission. And then attempt to cover it up.

While I wish that this next generation, or for some of us, our children, were all patriotic and wanted to serve like many in the past did. This is not that group of young adults.

I have seen the recruitment commercials, and my 20-year-old says that it missed the mark with his generation. Nor does he lack intelligence as he graduates next year.

If we genuinely want numbers again, two things can happen. Take care of the mission while ensuring you care for the one doing it. Some people don't have emotional intelligence or an empathetic side, and that's cool. But invest in your soldiers, their families, and hobbies. Or start a draft.

Another thing we could be doing better is telling a good story of serving out of all the people I have watched, ETS or retire. They all said similar things. I am ready; this is too much; I can't do this anymore, or If I'm going to get pooped on, at least I want to get paid for it. Realistically, the benefits do not compare to what private or corporate organizations can offer (a private getting paid minimum wage would make roughly 3600 a month; however, a Private makes 1900). Serving only post pones your civilian life and if you get hurt, you are not entitled to jobs that healthy civilians apply for, no matter what laws are out there regarding preferences. Employers will still NOT hire disabled veterans and will always choose the healthy candidate who never served. If you cannot increase veterans benefits to where 100% is at least 10k a month, you will not have shown this new generation, woke or not, that you will take care of them lost service and also show them that you can compensate them salary wise because serving nowadays is just not worth it when the government laughs at minorities and praises racist nationalists, to include the former president. This country has become a joke and no one wants to serve under a racist president who clearly displays it to the world. In conclusion, increase veterans benefits 2.5 fold and make healthcare care free no matter what for veterans and you will have your numbers increase. Then allow it to be downloaded for free.

What kids today seem to be focused on is their fantasy worlds. Give them a little of that, while still educating them about what protecting their country is really like. Then throw in the recruitment advertisement with a point list of benefits summary and most importantly - contact info at the end. These can even be sent to schools, for juniors and seniors, like recruiters used to do in person.

Plus, ROTC is still a great way to get kids involved and give them a taste of what to expect, with the pride of accomplishment that's hard to find elsewhere at that age. My current band has gone on recruiting tours, and many times we've literally done the recruiters' jobs. In a few cases the recruiters were actually detrimental in the overall effort, and on one of our more successful gigs we generated at least 88 leads/prospects in one instance at one school. Being my fifth band I'll admit that it's unorthodox what we do for the concerts compared to previous bands I've been in while on tour, but based purely on the intent and results I cannot say at all that the method is ineffective.

On the side of recruiting: while those who want to join are always in existence there should be a higher priority to getting them in. MEPS needs a leash on it; preferably a tight one. I dunno how many people I've seen over the years who literally wanted to join, but couldn't because MEPS shot them down for some seemingly minuscule thing that from my own observations wasn't doing anything to limit their day to day activities. If we're trying to take in people who, quite frankly, aren't a significant part of the population then we need to take another look at the population majority. Height/weight and bodyfat standards need to be completely redone. They were arbitrary from the beginning and still are. If the lead/prospect can do the PT test and score in the higher range then who gives A F about the fat (within reason). The world's strongest guys all have guts. None of them look like anything out of Greek or Egyptian mythology. I'm not expecting anyone to look like current versions of clearly obese servicemembers (pictures from years/decades past), but still. Army has a bit of the right idea by having their own version of the Corps' Physical Conditioning Platoon -- assuming neither do anything to adversely mark the person's career from the get-go.

Not the only issues. Quit being a social experiment and kissing the lastest political ass. I was an Engineer and Combat Aviator. I loved the military, the soldiers, the experience, and making myself a better man. The youth today need guidance, direction, challenges, and by God keep this country safe. They are asking what's in it for them? Why should I fight? The military needs to return to the look up to me attitude, not because what I say, but what I do. Stand for the Greatest Nation on Earth. We are Warriors. The military is for warriors. And by God we need this youth to become Warriors. You do that by Inspiration. Be the example. Show youth what they can become. Put them in the driver's seat, put them in the cockpit, and that means show youth what youth are doing. They are the ones going to Mars. They are the One's going to defend us when we are old and this nation when we are gone. The Communist, the terrorist, any like minded threat don't have to fight us and win the psychological war without doing anything because we are doing nothing. By God Inspire...Inspire...Inspire...and have some faith. Presidents come n go. Politicians quit meddling, the military works. And Inspiration by example works. Yes you can die. But like Patton said, "...make the other poor bastards die for their "cause". United We Stand! America is Inspiration! We had to fight to make it free. We have to fight to keep it free. We need Warriors to Inspire Warriors. And youth doing what other youth dream of doing...keep the inspiration and this nation....Free. People will have watched/heard/read about others' experiences in their rates/MOS's from friends and family or through social media. Some people look forward to ship/sub experiences and don't want sand or spiders in their boots. Others want tents in open spaces and don't want to be stacked in racks on ships/subs. Rank promotions and leadership opportunities, and the increase of responsibility and accountability can also be a draw to the military if they want to make it a career. Some poll opinions will be based on the informed personal experiences of others, but will more likely be based on TV/movie or social media depictions. Either way, there will be a decent sampling of their general feelings and attitude towards joining.

Poll service members that have made it through at least their second year, hopefully with a deployment under their belt, and ask their opinion, their likes and dislikes, anticipations and regrets, and what would make them continue with their branch and military duties. Retention efforts for those members would have bearing on recruitment efforts because there might be other influences that would have made a difference for them as new recruits.

You can't do a broad campaign that covers all branches. Actors in training videos turn us off for annual requirements and they won't cut it for recruitment videos, either. Move forward with advertising and marketing based on all of the poll info, but keep the actor aspect in mind.

It's a tough situation to draw the right people when it's easier to work a simple job, come home and play video games/surf social media, rather than be burdened with really serious responsibilities that may include million dollar equipment or peoples' lives. The country's attitude towards division won't help, either. Fear of being discriminated against, hated, or both is a major hurdle. I wouldn't want to work with anyone that despised me for being different than the majority. That needs to addressed and fixed because that'll prevent many good and dedicated people from wanting to serve. Leadership involves qualities like understanding emotions, being able to adapt, communicate well, and work well with a team. But what we should do is show video clips of the progression of America and how America grew to become the greatest country there is, by showing the hard times, for one example, the depression and the good times with how great America overcame it. Also show the videos of all the countries that have attacked us and what we have done to defeat them. More so, show Past veterans and their sacrifice to include inspirational video clips from them of what it means to serve. More so, keep it real! We need to also let civilians know what this country could turn into without honorable citizens joining up to serve in our military! And to end the video clips, show the camaraderie of the different branches of military. For example, show videos of the Marine Corps Ball or the Marine Corps‘s Mess nights, etc. Show the civilians that it’s not just about war when it comes to our military. Show the civilians how it’s a new life and also another great family to become a part of; what an honor it is to be a part of! If a potential recruit is told about enrolling in a 4 year degree program and another is sent to front lines...that doesn't create the want or even desire to join. Sharing all of the different opportunities and skills that an individual can have with their enlistment will make a big difference. If I knew about the opportunities working with the environment in the military I would had chosen that field to coincide with my degree. I served our country in Vietnam and taught JROTC to cadets in high school. What we focused on was making young people better citizens through honor, integrity, dedication and a passion keep America a free and prospering nation. There is nothing more gratifying than a young person establishing themselves through wearing a military uniform while maturing as a part of this great country. Also, the benefit of military service allows for a future of leading others in the civilian world, free education and being paid at a young age for services rendered. For those young people who make a career out the military, once they retire, they have at least retirement benefits automatically. Young people need to understand that in today's society working without future security is not a concrete life plan. To show young people a way to succeed while they have the capability to do so at an early age would enhance their survivor rate once maturing through military training and experience. I honestly believe more research needs to be done on the generation you wish to attract. The basics are always there financial security, job satisfaction etc. but perhaps highlighting/making some changes within the military will attract them. They seem to be more in tuned to how mental health impacts them. They also seem to care deeply about engaging in a career path that won’t “break them down to build them up.” Emphasis needs to be placed on how serving can transfer into the civilian sector. How can they get employment following the military? How will they be cared for? How will it benefit them afterwards? They see the complaints and conditions of veterans who aren’t doing well… why would they want to sign up if that’s their future? Frist as a grandfather, who has shared his military experience with some family members, both male and female. One has already joined the Army, even though I suggested the Air Force. He and his wife are doing very well in the Army, and they will retire from it, at least at this time that is their plans. Another Family member has been considering it but has obligations to her family that would make it difficult to leave them for any reason. I don't suggest it to some of the other family members because I don't think they would be able to do well in the services. So, it comes down to knowing who you are talking to. I would also ask them to at least give it a thought or two. Just being honest and sharing the good and bad about the military with all in your circle will help with recruitment. I think we could help in this way.
Second, as a professional, I work with Employers to help them hire job ready Veterans, so I get to talk with a lot of Veterans. I am a Local Veterans' Employment Representative (LVER). Most of the Veterans I work with; I would encourage them to share the opportunity of the Military with others. I have even had a couple go back into the Service after being out for a year or so. Then there are other Veterans that it may not be a good idea for them to share their experience with others. Overall, though, I would say, ask the Veterans out there to talk and encourage the younger people to give the military a good look before committing to another vocation. They know what to say and if they are honest, it won't be a flowery sells pitch that they will get from the Military Recruiters. All the information one needs to learn about the Services is available to them.
My third thought is, like many others have said, take the "woke" out of the military. If you have to identify as something that you are not, I will not consider you stable enough to trust you with my life or anyone else's. Just saying, not a confidence builder for me if you have male genitals and you want to say you are female. No, I am NOT homophobic or anything else, to each his own, but when it comes to relying on someone ... not for me. Clinton started the transformation of our military into a social political experiment with the "Don't ask Don't tell" policy. Now we are force feed the alphabet soup, training for pronouns and acceptance. We were warriors at one time and now we are trying to figure out what bathroom or shower to use. I joined in 1986 and retired in 2017, I loved being a Soldier and took great pride for what we stood for. I was happy when I got out because of what the WOKE agenda was doing to our forces. They took away the pride and values we lived and served by. Our mission was and still is to fight and win war's but that is no longer our focus, we are training on pronouns and the alphabet agenda. We need to get rid of the alphabet people and back to the warrior ethos, we need warriors not Drag Queens. There are currently so many opportunities this generation has and wants to accomplish, careers and life goals. So many are aware of how the military can change their path. Besides all this, they understand their political rights and the social-economic changes between countries that could possibly lead to war any day, which creates fear to be in the military (besides other factors). I think the best way for this generation to be encouraged to serve is by educating them that "Freedom is not free". You don't know what you have until you lose it. This generation enjoys the rights and freedoms it has because of past generational fathers and mothers that sacrificed their freedom. This generation can be educated that in order to keep their rights, peaceful living, freedom of speech and all 10 amendments, they need to be prepared for war any day. And being prepared for any national disaster requires them to be in the military, as an opportunity of safety, independence, protection and personal growth. So, a good way to promote serving our country is by teaching them that they are not only serving others, but themselves. Also, many in this generation in the age of the late 30's-40's ponder in serving the military and have accomplished careers and life goals already but are unaware of some benefits the military can offer them by joining at a later age and performing their same job as they do as a "civilian". The age range in the different military branches also varies, so they can be extended to healthy adults wanting to join. People aging late 20's,30,40"s may require of promotion and education. Not all can work full time, but can be in the reserves, meaning they will be another citizen prepared for any national disaster to serve the country. I believe this generation is broad, so it can be segmented in age, culture and needs. Each age range of this generation requires to be encouraged/educated differently according to their needs in this time of age. God bless America, this generation needs to remember God like Abraham Lincoln said on March 30, 1863 as an effort to encourage Americans to recenter their lives around God and prayer: "Whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord." Sara Castaneda Fri, 25 Aug 2023 10:51:19 -0400 2023-08-25T10:51:19-04:00 Response by Sgt David Branham made Aug 25 at 2023 11:21 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-should-we-do-to-encourage-the-next-generation-to-serve?n=8439761&urlhash=8439761

Increase income and retirement benefits Sgt David Branham Fri, 25 Aug 2023 11:21:50 -0400 2023-08-25T11:21:50-04:00 Response by SPC Kevin Matos Caraballo made Aug 25 at 2023 11:29 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-should-we-do-to-encourage-the-next-generation-to-serve?n=8439782&urlhash=8439782

Provide needed education on what to expect in the Military and when transitioning back to the community. Good people keep getting out (myself included). For overall retention, hold S1 accountable. I have held multiple jobs over my lifetime and never had so many pay issues in one organization. It truly is mind boggling how unorganized every S1 is in the Army. When you aren’t paid properly, you don’t have an incentive to do your work well. Also, the overwhelming extra duties for no extra pay—again, no incentive to do the work properly. That’s why every assumed extra duty is almost always done poorly. Also, how about increasing the pay overall? Yes, the health insurance is free, but it is so hard to make an appointment. I have dealt with this as a Soldier and now, as a spouse. I have less problems with the VA, and that is saying something.

We don’t want to lower the standards for people to initially enlist, we want the benefits in the organization to increase. Now that we have the future soldier prep course and it has shown great success we need to eliminate the AFQT. Basically it will still be on everyone’s test but 50 and higher still makes you eligible for a bonus where as anything else lower can be evaluated. Said applicant can either go to the prep course or if they have a qualifying score and can get a job then they get it.

2. When it comes to medical conditions obviously some are worse than others and some should stay disqualifying I.E asthma. Most of the other treatable things people are on medication for half the force is on them as well, and can continue to serve. So we can’t they continue their medication and during BCT and AIT have a morning med call to ensure they are all getting taken care of? Also, certain meds before the age of 18. That’s huge since COVID so many people have got on medications and now can’t serve because of it. But being younger than 18 you fall underneath your parents so if the DR proscribes it you’re getting it from the pharmacy because you have no choice.

3. When we were involved in an active war you seen and heard things about it all the time, but now that we aren’t there isn’t any media letting the public know we aren’t at war.

These few changes I believe would make a huge difference, because I personally know some individuals that would be great soldiers but they can’t pass the test, they just aren’t good with tests. We have to realize and understand that this new generation isn’t learning what we did in school. Example everyone has a laptop for school, we had computer labs. It would be entered into their medical record, which could be accessed by said Genesis system, and your child would either be disqualified from service based on Ritalin / ADHD, or require a lengthy & tedious waiver process.

So, while the drop in interest is very real, but not as bad as it's made out to be, the fact that there are now medically historic disqualifying factors accessible (even if said factors are not an issue) makes it harder to recruit personnel.

Also, and perhaps more important, Chains of Command need to stop being political and start being WARFIGHTERS. I know that is a broad statement to make and even harder to live up to or meet! As a USAF Recruiter in the mid to late 1960s, I had to convince the young men and women of the era to enlist or apply for Officer/Nurse status. There was an undeclared conflict (WAR) going on which dated to 1955, increased in 1961/62 and was officially recognized by President Johnson in 1964 and many men were receiving "Draft/Induction Notices". I had to fill a monthly quota and it was hard. I had served already in Republic of South Vietnam (February 1962 to February 1963) and knew what was ahead for many of my enlistees. I was on a guaranteed four-year recruiting tour (November 1965 to November 1969) and promised another four years if I desired. I had been named Top Recruiter of the Month and Quarter several times but felt conflicted with my duty and emotions. Early in the year of 1969 I broached the subject with my wife, and she accepted my stated desire to volunteer for an immediate assignment for return to Vietnam. My volunteer status was quickly accepted, and I was sent to Vietnam for a second tour May 1969 to May 1970. My Recruiting Commander in St. Louis, Missouri was not that happy, but thanked me for being an example for his other Recruiters to promote in their pursuit of filling quotas. Unfortunately for him, two more of his star recruiters quickly followed my lead and joined me in Vietnam. I wear my "VIETNAM VETERAN" Cap proudly and thank everyone who says, "Thank you for your service". There are a few World War II Cap wearers still around and the Korean Conflict era are dying off also, and the multiple conflicts, crisis, invasions around the world since, all deserve to wear caps as examples and be proud and thanked for their service. The political reasons thereof, for each of the above wars and conflicts, are not the persons' who answered the Call problem. A final note: Many Veteran Centers, etc., receive handwritten letters and notes from children from kindergarten to high school. Please try to respond to any of these letters you may see and thank them for their thoughtfulness. This may inculcate the young from an early age to recognize military service as an accepted practice and sometimes duty of the American Citizen. CMSgt Elbert E. We have alienated a large group of our society by many of the current changes as as well as those who se the military as a machine for negative purpose and very little value and respect. They do not respect the foundation of our society and cannot debate the issues rather they throw flames and cry some cover or another when we disagree rather than agreeing to disagree finding some middle ground.

Nex we have to face that men are men and women are women. No offense intended, we cannot recognize every psychological development making a clear path. I have no problem if someone has a sex change and joins the service ready to fight. I cannot understand recruiting a person who identifies without having had the physiological change.

This placards them in showers with the opposite sex with all their components to bare.

Not to be glib, if a spouse, or female service member wants breast augmentation they have to pay out of pocket save an medical reasoning. Why then would the military pay for the surgeries and treatment associated with this type transition. The psychological should be afforded. Bottom line is that the reality is that we are cowing to what amounts to a fraction of societ while ignoring the feelings and disregarding the rights of the larger parts of society.

Develope training platforms that include discipline and teaches teamwork and respect for one another.

We should never have shied away from discipline, specific standards with failure as a possibility. Everyone is not equal and excell within themselves, as a group or stand out as a leader. There is room for everyone in our space.

One service is doing it truly very close to the way it was sone for the past two decades, until the last three years. They have no recruitment or retention issues. If I were boing today I would have taken the pen from that office as opposed to the one I served in for over 30 year.

They have met the guidance of the senior leaders and maintains the respect and discipline needed to fill and maintain a fighting force.

The government should edict that all public schools be rquired to have recruiters attend events and speak to large audiences. Booth set up in the gym, encouraging the youth of America to listen and evaluate.

Instead the government is doing just the opposite, tying the hands of the entire process. Universities hold rallies against the military while not giving them a voice, the same should be true at public Universities.

Finally salaries and pensions are not doing well as a final encouragement to serve the long hall. We as service members to put their faith in financial planners or become one themselves. The retiremt package mirrors that of the public sector GS rating. The difference is huge in two main areas, salaries and base pay lag greatly. The other being that the public sector also counts all pay received for the last three years including locality pay, similar to BAH, to be counted in the final pension. This is a huge disparity. So a civilian who works in your staff may be a hi level clerk GS12 with 5 to ten years in grade, but they make more that the LTC who runs the Battalion.

I could go on but it is too deep a topic and I probably lost focus. I respect everyone and there life's decisions, however it should not impact mine. Finally get the pay straight. It is to huge a number to just change overnight, make it a ten year plan for the pay, the retirement package could change now. To encourage the next generation to "man up" (so to speak) and serve, remove the obstacles. Currently, many patriotic souls are discouraged by public opinion. Currently, the powers that be have waged a culture war on traditional types. The military is being co-opted for social experimentation. The generation of current high school and college students have often been taught the United States is terrible. Factual American History without liberal or (seldom) conservative ideology influenced commentary isn't taught in most schools. In this situation, it is difficult to get young people to align their person goals with those of the Country. Some young people are taught to have pride in their country and given a factual, positive view of US history. Most often they get this at home.
