When I was the PL in this situation I would always email or call my PSG before drill and ask what he needed to complete that weekend to stay up on his AGR duties. If it was overwhelming between drill activities and work that needed to be done, we usually went out to dinner once the duty day was complete. It gave us time to talk about our platoon and for him to input how he wants things implemented since he wasn't always around due to AGR needs. Doing the dinners really helped form a bond to accomplish missions.

What do you mean by no time? Is he tied up in completing full time duties during drill?

No not at all. Its leading up to drill is the challenge. The question more so pertains to trying to get an understanding to a transitioning PL who has a PSG, that the whole company depends on to take care of admin operations. It seems that the PL and PSG are struggling to work together.

I am a PSG/Readiness NCO. I have my monthly battle rhythm down so that the PL, CPT, 1SG and section chiefs have their duties prior to drill and are involved in all planning processes. This gives me plenty of time for mentoring the PL in what I need to mentor him with and stepping out of the way for professional development he receives with the commander. The key is getting the pew-drill battle rhythm in check.

I was both also, I agree having a strong CDR and 1SG is key. Briefing the Other PSG, and Section leaders ensure you have time to accomplish your tasks both AGR and PSG.

That happens alot in the Guard. Lots of time the full time staff are promoted into positions they are not qualified for so on Drill weekends they always are " I must work on my fulltime stuff". We had a SFC "Motor Sgt " when we deployed that wormed up to BN to basically become a E-4 clerk. Not missed, had a E-5 that did a super job.
