I see a lot of varying opinions out there as to what the essay should contain. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Natalie Goeddertz The truth, your truth. Not some made up BS. Why do you want to serve? Why you?
You may want to read the book The Armed Forces Officer by SLA Marshall . Current version available in PDF. http://ndupress.ndu.edu/Publications/Books/Armed-Forces-Officer/

I recommend being clear on why you wish to serve as an Army Officer. This will require that you study what an officer is, why they do, what thier function is in the Army. Once you have determined this, I would assess your own skills and values, connect them to what the Army does and how they compliment what an officer does. Many college graduates believe they are entitled to a commission simply because they degree and that service as an enlisted soldier is beneath them. This is not he case, service as an officer is demanding and requires a self awareness to be successful. Military officers should be the epitome of servant leadership. I heard a wise saying once, “You have been appointed not anointed”. Always be humble and understand that you will serve the American people. Keep all this in mind and then prepare your one page statement of motivation. Good luck.
