What should you know about returning to the dentist during COVID-19?

As dental offices resume providing care, more people are asking if it’s safe to return to their dentists. On April 30, 2020, the American Dental Association ended its recommendation to postpone dental care. Here are some changes you might see.

You may be asked to:
• Wait outside or in your car rather than in the waiting room
• Take your temperature and answer pre-screening questions before entering
• Wear a face mask and sanitize your hands while in the office

Once you’re in the chair:
• You may notice new tools in the office, such as air purifiers designed to help remove virus particles from the air
• Your dentist and staff will be wearing more protective personal equipment (PPE) than before

I passed on my last cleaning back in March and as my next cleaning approaches I am quite undecided about what to do? I realise my dentist needs to make a living too but this seems to be a highly risky choice? I try not to be paranoid about where and when to go various places but the dentist just seems to be a step too far? Please advise?

I went to my dentist last week for a cleaning. They called me the day before and asked the health questions and told me the procedure. I had to wear my own mask on the way in and out. I had to call them when I got there and then wait in the car. When they were ready an assistant came out and took my temperature and then escorted me in. I was taken straight to the chair. The assistants and dentist have always worn masks during treatment but not all the office staff were also wearing masks and those doing treatment didn't take them off. My hygienist was also wearing a face shield. All in all was a very good experience.

What are dentists doing to ensure patients are not exposed to biocides from disinfectants? These are lung irritants, and neurotoxins and the overuse and misuse can be detrimental to ones health. It's bad enough dental offices use neurotoxic air fresheners and cleaning agents that adversely effect a population already chemically sensitive from over exposure to environmental toxins, we do not need additional exposures all in the name of disinfecting.
