"Bring The Boys Home", by Freda Payne is the song that did it for me. Because of the opportunity to co-host a series about veterans, suicide prevention, PTSD, Depression, and suicidal ideation on WIZS.com Town Talk, I realize that honoring the veterans from that time of war is important because many people supported them being brought back home. Good question. While the song came out in 1972, I think, it sums up the Vietnam War as a whole for me. Every time I hear it I think about the thousand of troops who came home in boxes. The saddest thing is that every last one of them came home differently from when they left home.

PO3 Phyllis Maynard: There is a good book on Viet Nam songs and how they resonated throughout the different periods of the war. I gave this book when it first came out to my husband ('69-'70, 25th ID, 2/12 Bravo Iron Triangle). He really enjoyed it, as did I.

Psyops loudspeakers as my Huey descended onto the LZ in the middle of nowhere. And the bugle call “Charge!” as we dropped or jumped off the Huey onto the ground, finger on the trigger and running like hell for at least 50 meters to clear the chopper.

I’m the son of a Nam vet so for me it would have to be “More Than A Name On A Wall” by the Statler Brothers. I did hear a lot of the music from that era and do enjoy it but this one, which was released when The Wall (Vietnam Veterans Memorial) was opened, really seems to hit home - his name could’ve been there. Thanks to all Nam vets in this group and a long overdue welcome home!

My favorite is "Proud Mary" by Credence Clearwater Revival." But I also liked the Animals' "We've Got to Get Out of this Place," as well as "Green, Green Grass of Home" by several artists. To really appreciate any of these classics you have to have heard them at a packed club performed by a wandering Filipino band. By the second pitcher of beer (any brand but Carling's) they sounded pretty good.

Hi School post-Vietnam (the fall of Saigon was during my freshman year) at the end of High School I read Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" - and immediately after I read that book 'Apocalypse Now" came out - if you can't see the connection between the two, then you need to turn in your certificate for graduating from kindergarten. For a hundred years after that book came out the whole world thought that the book was metaphor, its been only in the last twenty that people realized that Conrad was describing 'Crimes against Humanity'

There was a San Francisco lecture series that was televised 'Keeping Score' about groundbreaking music - the one for here was 'Eroica', Beethoven's 3rd Symphony - the lecture was about Beethoven coming to terms with his growing deafness - if you replace the remarks about deafness with PTSD, it's incredible - a biography of so many of us with PTSD with the triumph (hopefully) at the end - Everybody is the hero of their own story - Veterans More So.

In order of impact: Buffy St. Marie 'The Universal Soldier' (pop. by Donovan) Dylan's 'Blowing In The Wind", Country Joe McDonald and the Fish "VietNam Rag", Glenn Campbell's "Galveston". Eric Burdon and the Animal's "Sky Pilot', and Creedence Clearwater's "Fortunate Son' which reminds me of a former Captain of Cadets at an eastern military academy who somehow missed the real-life soldiering experience. The Rooster by Alice in Chains. I know it came out in 1993 but the song makes the pain so real (no I'm not a Vietnam era but this song can move everyone's emotions. [Mind you its not the only good Vietnam War Era, but for me, it really drives it home.] For those who don't know, the song was written by guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell for his father, Jerry Cantrell Sr., whose childhood nickname was "Rooster" and served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. If memory serves his father was a sniper. Alice in Chains have recorded at least two versions of the song, a hard rock "ballad" version and a version unplugged. At the beginning of the hard rock video on YouTube there's a brief interview of Cantrell Sr.

Country Joe and the Fish's "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" along with the the modified version of "The Fish Cheer". That one song symbolizes Vietnam for me.

I know this isn't about me or this, but I have a singular view of life. Deploying to Afghanistan, and having my son taken out of custody with out a hearing because I swore to defend the constitution that doesn't apply to me. A military record is more harmful than a criminal record in regards to parenthood in this country. However the second half of this song explains military service clearly.

It was Ohio for me. I was a bit young for Vietnam, 11 when that song came out. I was, of course, aware ... we watched it on TV every night. But it was still a bit abstract. When Ohio came out, it was the song that "connected" me with what happened. It was about a specific event that I saw (on TV) and read about.

During my time in country, 64-65, the highlands, I can't recall ever hearing a negative song. The song that sticks in my mind was titled "Diane". I believe it was done by Frankie Vaille. It was on the juke box, in our club, at the company HQ at TanSonNhut. Whenever I was there I would play that song.

Alice In Chains, “Rooster”.
Rooster was released in 1993, long AFTER the Vietnam War. Rooster is the Father of the band’s founder, Jerry Cantrell. I was born in ‘68, and I am a Veteran of Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. When I was in Iraq from 2009-2010, this song connected me with my predecessors from Vietnam. Till this day, this powerful song puts me as close to the jungles of Vietnam as I can get.

I am fortunate. When I came home from both Wars, my country welcomed me home with open arms. I was greeted as a hero, because Vietnam Vets made sure America would never disgrace her Veterans again.

I'm a Viet Nam era vet. I didn't get sent to Viet Nam. I turned 18 in 1969 but for the grace of God, I was never drafted. I enlisted in May of 1974. My little brother was in the Peace Movement and marched in the May Day demonstration in DC in 1971.
Somehow the song, "Bring the Boys Home" by Freda Payne is not part of my memory. I just listened to it on YouTube and it still isn't familiar. Of course, in 1971 I was a young married 20-year-old father and husband trying to earn a living. Maybe it just wasn't on the radio stations I listened to.

For me it wasn't a song. It was being assigned to many crash cleanups and being assigned to many operations. All of which it was up to me to recover and send the bodies home. It was hardest when the bodies had to be recovered in small pieces.
