I think even the mere consideration of more open source solutions can benefit everyone. It would challenge organizations and individuals to look outside the box, be creative, and stay curious when solving problems or improving systems and infrastructure. You can't argue that Linux and open source aren't everywhere already.

Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) is a Linux Foundation projectdedicated to creating open source software solutions for automotive applications. Although the initial target for AGL is In-Vehicle-Infotainment (IVI) systems, additional use cases such as instrument clustersand telematics systems will eventually be supported. SGT (Join to see) SPC John Lebiecki - Don't recent hacking attacks by criminals . . . and government insistence on inserting code for remote control ( e.g, to facilitate involuntary tracking and stopping of vehicles ) . . . raise any concerns??? Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

1LT Sandy Annala - Yes, and I think using more open source solutions can foster a better mindset to counter that. For example, if DoD finds a way to buy out and perverse Ubuntu, there's still Debian, Centos, Fedora, Arch, Gentoo, etc. Those in the open source community revel in the options and customization. Adobe Reader always has vulnerabilities. Okay, use Foxit or Evince. Many people who aren't a fan of the government's snooping also understand the government won't help fight it. That's for "We the People" to fight - together or alone.

CMDCM Gene Treants - Our analytical and operational teams meet and talk face to face as much as possible when we are in the office, at both informal and formal internal, social, and external gatherings, and when abroad on assignment. Sandy :)

There are some very promising advances in the area of brain training using very small electrical impulses to stimulate the brain while performing the desired function (ie, while a pilot is flying, or while a mathematician is doing math). It doesn't make you smarter overall...it just makes you better at the desired function.

All of that sounds great 1LT Sandy Annala, but how often do the people in your organization actually TALK face-to-face. Before I retired I found I was doing much of my "talking" to my unit via text or emails. Yes it was faster and more convenient, I could even get the word out to all faster, BUT I was not talking to them and losing personal touch on a daily basis. FIanlly I realized what I was NOT doing and forced myself to actually interface at least daily with each of the people in my unit and my supervisors.

Don't e-mail someone sitting next to you, engage in real conversation, get up and walk to an office for a one on one dialogue! Don't let Millennial troops only converse with you via text...Meet with them, make an impact, let them know you care and want to help them succeed!

That was a problem we had in Social Services even before I retired a few years back. Yes, it easy to fire off an email memo to your troops, but this is a chance to actually talk face-to-face and interact on a personal level once in a while. Get off your ass and actually TALK
