Inherent to this problem is security in that everything is affected due to screening which takes time, which affects the contracting process, then the training, then the bugs... and by then... the technology is outdated. I foresee a future where most govt' technology has to utilize a form of a secure cloud, along with AI controlling every piece of hardware, with the hardware acting as a form of a thin client. Not only do hardware act as thin clients, but are modular in order to increase, replace, or optimize it's performance capabilities. Crucial to this piece is the development of 5G networks and the incorporation of the "Internet of Things (IoT)" that allow the thin clients to communicate in a timely and hasty manner.

The elephant in the room is that there are too many companies, along with the contracting processes, that complicate the roll out of technology. There has to be an efficient corporate solution that ensures that the technology is generated out in a timely in manner; along with a streamlined communication process that does not get lost between too many companies and controlling parties. By streamlining the technology through cloud, AI, and well-thoughtout contracting process; this would accelerate security, usability, and minimize training between Armed Services personnel.

I know this is not the best way to explain it, but you do not see in Star Trek where 25 different reps come to repair a defective system. The systems just works and I know it's just a TV/Series.

** Source: The Movie "The Pentagon Wars" CPT Private RallyPoint Member Sat, 30 Jul 2016 07:32:18 -0400 2016-07-30T07:32:18-04:00 Response by Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen made Jul 30 at 2016 11:55 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-technology-advancements-can-make-the-biggest-impact-in-your-workplace?n=1762849&urlhash=1762849

Been through what most comments mention at some point. I'd say keep up with the all technology that applies to your industry or tasks and upgrade as soon as budgets allow. This requires supervisors and managers looking ahead and inputting technology upgrades into long range budgets and senior leadership with the foresight to keep funding in final budgets. A good example that applies to many companies is simple CCTV camera systems. Twenty years ago state of the art was analog cameras recorded by VCRs. Such systems don't even exist today. If your company didn't invest in digital cameras and recording systems you simply weren't keeping up with technology. Lots of similar examples but my point is that making small upgrades to keep abreast of current technology is much more cost effective than having to replace entire systems that have become obsolete. Employment and communication depend on it now and it will have to be secure beyond a doubt. But, this is where we are heading as an integration of people and work flow. For example: I need access to John Doe's medical records. He fell ill on vacation. He lives in Maine. All his medical records are secure from everyone. But, I have access. I view his latest CT before I perform an ultrasound exam.

This makes me doing the right thing at the right time. I do not get called to the office for reviewing Mr. Doe's record. Now, if I was just looking to look, that is a violation. Now, view this model on everything that we Americans do. If I work for the Department of Defense in missiles, but I am overseas, I better be viewing the correct information and not accessing info I have no business seeing. When you go off the reservation, it can be hard to be allowed back on.

With AI software and a Supercomputer with unlimited storage, we will be helped in our field of expertise. Command Post of the Future (CPOF) should seriously drop the future part. They have been in service since 2003 or 2004, and were being constructed in 1999. But, we still can't just call it just command post, because the word "future" allows for job and contract security. How about we in the DoD, do a better job at embracing the technology progression of over that last decade and try to catch up with the rest of society. Then maybe, we could then look at the future. Unfortunately, we entered two major war fronts (OEF/OIF), without raising taxes (Thanks Bush), and now we barely have money in the defense budget to train and maintain the force with, let alone invest in current technology. Easy example, look at the M16. It has been in service since 1964, we are just now almost done replacing them with the M4, which was first used in the military in 1994. We get excited when we put a weapon on a remote control vehicle. I was doing that back in the late 80s with my remote control cars and G.I. Joe action figure guns. Look at solar power. It's been in everyday household use since the 90's. We still carry batteries for everything in the field. We still need UPS to keep our servers on when I am sure Solar Power could fill a battery and allow systems to run during a power outage. We also go to the field and practice light and noise discipline, until we crank those loud 10-30K watt generators. I am sure there is an answer there with Solar Power too. I feel like the rest of the world will be teleporting places and we will still be jumping out of planes that were built in the 80's. Last note, when we do embrace an upgrade, we still go with lowest bidder. So that means it will be 2-5 years before the new technology actually works the way the industries promise and that is only after all the patches and upgrades. I will say on a positive note, I joined the army and was working off the old desktops during the dial up internet connection days. That technology changed pretty rapidly and I appreciate that everyday.
