Linkedin, H2H, Hiring Our Heroes.

I am new to the Raleigh, NC area. I am a former business owner, and a business and management consultant. I have 23 years of management experience, supported by a Master's of Science in Management. I have found the job search to be a nightmare here. The available options are the countless 'impersonal' job boards (Indeed, Career Builder, Monster, et al), LinkedIn and Craig's List. I have been searching for a career position OR a 'job for now' since moving here in July. I've checked the 'hire a vet' sites - all redirecting the seeker to Monster.com. My resume is all over the internet. I do not find internet 'job boards' to be helpful in the least. Unfortunately, even the local newspaper has less than ten jobs posted at a time, and the online edition, when the classified section is checked, directs the reader to Monster.com. I have received more 'thanks for applying' responses, however, through LinkedIn, leading me to believe that is the main posting outlet checked by employers. Even the 'Show your Stripes' site, designed for employers to brag about hiring Vets, is a Monster.com tool.

I am of the opinion that the system needs to be scrapped, flushed and started over. It's actually becoming frustrating to not have a 'go-to' site for quality job listings where one might even get a 'thanks for applying' response (outside of LinkedIn, with limited openings advertised).

I would, at this point, suggest constant newspaper advertising, coupled with radio advertisement. Sure they are basic options, but in this day and age, with all of the technology - K.I.S.S. would seem to work the best.

I used proven.com's iPhone app. Loaded my résumé, and dropped 60 applications over two days. Within two weeks, I'd received 20 callbacks. Some wanted to offer me a position on the spot! I highly recommend the app.

A well setup LinkedIn profile and actively applying landed me the Job I am currently in now.

I also got tons of interviews from Clearedjobs.net and Clearancejobs.com. USAJOBS.GOV is also a great place to build an resume if you are looking for federal government work.

First let me say I am in the NG and currently a project manager for an IT company.

Clearance holders: clearancejobs.com
everyoneelse: Mass apply on indeed.

It sucks and alot of army MOS dont transfer. But you have to stay on top of it and apply apply apply.

Soldiers in the army need to focus on getting IT certifications and or medical.

Combatives and training like that wont land you anything on the outside.

This is one reason I rely on Linked In for job searches. granted, most of my searches are in the National Defense space, but other MOSs can find equally good hunting for the areas in which they are interested.

Linkedin is the way to go. All it takes is finding a connection who has connections in Verizon. Establish a line of communication and then get the recommendation for the job. It always helps to have someone on the inside.
