What type of corrective training can be given to a soldier that’s on a dead man’s profile?

I have a soldier that is being MEBD for heatstroke. He’s on a deadman’s profile. He is also facing an AR 15 for underage drinking and fighting with another SM. He “forgets” to answer his phone and/or return them (texts included) and has missed accountability formation 4 times for oversleeping. Ok I know the kid’s brain is fried but this is getting ridiculous. Any ideas are welcome.

*UPDATE: Not too sure as to why I’m getting all these replies. This was a year ago lol. I’ll give you all an update though. He eventually was medboarded. He went back home to be with family and is on 80% disability. He was offered a job by a family friend but I believe he was let go.

For those of you that said he can’t be that bad or perhaps thought some of it was an act, I assure it’s not. If I’m wrong, the kid is severely committed to the role and could teach Christian Bale a thing or two. He has permanent brain damage. He’s delusional. He’s called me a few times in the middle of the night looking for a friendly voice. Last time we spoke he remembered his time on profile as him doing my job and him being in charge of the misfits and the training room. He was on his second job doing security. He wants to go to school for nursing but that along with his mood and train of thought change constantly.
Can’t keep track of the kid. He gets depressed and deletes all of his social media for months, then comes back reinvented. Kind of like what Madonna does to her image. Last time I saw him, he dyed his hair and beard black and this grunge type 5FDP group.It's been 3 months since I've heard from him this time. I'm hoping he's alright and with loved ones to watch over him.*

Jesus....That's some bad heatstroke to get Med Boarded. But, to answer your question, take a look at the profile as it should say what they CAN do as well as what they CAN'T do. For the missing formation...you could easily have them standing at the flag pole when the flag goes up AND down. You could have them sign in for accountability every hour during the duty day and into the evening. Have them write an essay on the importance of. All kinds of things, really. You just have to be creative and ensure that the corrective training encompasses what the infraction is. You could also have them grab a cot and sleep in/near the CQ office. Although that last one might be a stretch.

I am not sure what all the Army stuff is, but I had a similar sailor as a young officer. I found another sailor and made them personally responsible for the misfit sailor. If he missed training, formations, then he would be punished, not the misfit. Took about 1 day for the misfit to start making it on time to things.

Underage drinking, fighting, and failure to report. Why isn't this kid facing an article 15? Confer with you supervisors, but you might be able to have a cot setup at the CQ for him. This solves the contact and failure to report problems. As for the other issues, this is something that you and your NCO support channel need to work out.

We call these leadership challenges, but never forget that the corrective training should be aimed at the specific deficiency. Yes, your troop seems to have a lot of deficiencies that need to be corrected, but as leaders we must target the root cause of the behavior or actions. You know your Soldier best, and you know what motivates them and where the excel and learn best. Leadership is process of exhausting your resources, time - energy - and focus, into your follower. Do you best to assign specific corrective actions that address the root cause of the problem, but don't give up on them.

A few of my standard corrective actions that address - commitment, confidence, and competence deficiencies are: Reciting the Soldier's Creed/ Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer daily, given a class to their peers on the specific deficiency, and explaining what the Army Values and Army profession means to them.

Verbal and written counseling whereupon SM would be instructed to report to CQ desk at the top of each hour beginning at the one prior to first formation, then continuing until lights out. Once reporting, SM will sit still and close eyes for five minutes doing nothing but breathing exercises. Just saw MSG Private RallyPoint Member 's comment about standing at flagpole and love that idea also. Without knowing whether or not this person was a good soldier at one time or not, I would stick with busy work that aligns with his profile limitations, hourly accountability from the first report (the top of the hour before first formation) and requiring him to monitor his physical condition in front of responsible witnesses through the day.

Honestly, at this point they clearly don't care. They know they're getting the boot.
"What are you going to do, kick me out twice?" is a common refrain from those getting axed. Don't let this waste of resources eat all your time. They can still provide very valuable CQ or SD runner services 2-3 times a week. Makes it much easier to keep track of them, and it frees up a Soldier that IS worth your time and gives them time to train/develop/ accomplish the mission, etc...

The old adage of "there are no bad Soldiers, only bad leaders" is nonsense. The military is clearly not for everyone. If it was, we wouldn't have a 80% attrition rate. 10% of your Soldiers will be stellar and require very little supervision on your part. 10% will be the useless chaff that occupies all your time. That 80% in the middle need you. Whether or not they get the guidance and mentorship they need now will determine in the future which 10% bracket they will fall into later. Don't shortchange the bulk of your personnel... Sometimes the kindest thing the military can provide someone is a handshake and a tour of the exit.

If the Soldier is able to perform the task you are correcting them for then they should be able to perform corrective training related to the task.
In your situation reporting into the CQ/ Staff Duty on the hour every hour until a set bed time, then starting again after duty hours will be topical. This can be done for 3 days to a week for a first infraction and extended for subsequent infractions. The key is topical. The Soldier is missing report times for accountability, give that Soldier tasks related to accountability and reporting. *****EXTRA IMPORTANT***** LOOK HERE>>>>> Fill out the Plan of Action and Evaluation sections of the counseling form with the plan and the results. It will help if the issue progresses to another recommendation for Article 15.

Reading what you have said about his condition, you have to treat him like he got his legs and arms blown off. He must have brain damage and a bunch of other problems physically and mentally. You wouldn't get upset if somebody with no legs or arms couldn't do PT, so go that way. Save yourself the aggravation. Maybe get volunteers help him get to work on time etc.

One of my NCOs calls them eye bats, squeeze your eyes shut for three seconds, open them, and repeat until you are told otherwise! He said he's had soldiers do that for up to a half hour, and it hurts! I had to do them for about 2 minutes and my face was sore! I think he got a pat on the back for creativity.

We had 2 of those silver galvanized trash cans in Germany. One was called "Moti" and the other "Vation". If you were 10 minutes late you polished the trash cans for 30 mins (inside and out). If you were late up to 5 minutes, it was 15 minutes on the can after duty hours. If you did not want to do that, you got an art 15 for being late, it was your choice. We had some outstandingly shiny trash cans in front of the Battery, that were not for trash.

If he is being MEBD the unit can have him assigned to to the medical transition unit if there is space for him. I was also MEBD from Combative having my opponent complete an arm bar on me and the pain was massive but I still performed my duties, but in your Soldiers case, the sooner you can get him to the MEBD Transition unit the better. Check with the OMNiBUS at your hospital on post.

If he is being medical boarded for that severe of heat stroke that he is on your deadman profile he should not be invavunit but in a hospital pending medical retirement because the military did this to him.

I'd have a designated spot where he would check in every hour whether it's with CQ or staff duty. He could also pull duty during the day and if the profile allows it pull it a couple times a week.

SPC Melissa, when a person goes into a coma, there are alot of things going on, if the coma is the result of a heatstroke, The body temperature rises to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and you develop neurological changes, such as mental confusion or unconsciousness. At these high temperatures, body proteins and the membranes around the cells in the body, especially in the brain, begin to be destroyed or malfunction. (drugs.com) the simple fact that the person comes out of the coma doesn't indicate that the person has recovered, they could have suffered some brain damage, this damage could very well be a contributing factor in the Soldier's behavior, or his " Forgetting"

As a leader you have to understand that the Soldier is in a MEB, your main focus should be to ensure that the Soldier makes all of his Appointments and that you are keeping a very good record of the Soldier's performance, At this point, the only mission this Soldier has is to get well.

If the Soldier is having problems making formations, you as the leader should be going to his residence to make sure he is up and ready for formation, if he isn't answering phone calls or texts, you are more than likely going to have to take his messages to him in person, if communication continues to be a problem and the Soldier is living off post, you may want to consider speaking with your command about relocating the Soldier into the Barracks for safety reasons.

I would also be very careful assuming that the Soldier is taking advantage of the situation, it will only cloud your judgment as a leader, Bottom line your make sure your Soldier is where he is supposed to be, make sure that you are keeping up with his appointments and his progression through the MEB process, if he is taking MEDS, make sure that you have a list of those MEDS and how they can affect the Soldier, make sure that you are doing your morning & evening checks on the Soldier, make sure you are askinig him if he is takinig his MEDS.Make sure that you are not assigning any tasks that will violate his profile, make sure he isn't violating the profile. The easiest thing for you and the command to do for this Soldier would be to place him on the CQ roster, day on day off, this way it would assist you as his leader in keeping an eye on him and monitoring his activities, if this becomes too much of a task for him, all you have to do is simply keep him on the day on/off schedule, but have him sit with the AOD/ CQ. You could also consider taking the Soldier to the Out processing center and hooking him up with a counselor, start getting him ready to transition out the military.

I will also add that you have to be very careful with corrective training, remember that this Soldier more than likely has a Brain injury from the Stroke, any undue stress or activities could cause further injury.

You really can only write him up. The downside to that would be it could prolong his MEBD out and thus make him your problem even longer. Personally if it were me, Id see about getting him restricted to barracks until he's done out-processing but wouldn't put anything on paper that would prolong him getting paid by the military.

I think that your options are limited, and the Soldier's willingness to get un-f*cked at this stage is likely zero.
At issue here is accountability, and that is something that you are responsible for. Therefore, I would issue this cat an MBITR and have him maintain it at full volume and with charged batteries at all times. If someone needs him, they can call him on the radio.
An older school option would be to string some commo wire to the barracks and put a field phone next to his bunk, but if he strays from there you've lost him again. Making him carry the field phone around would be funny, but not practical unless you want him tethered to a spot...

Is there a psychological reason for this behavior? Maybe there's grounds there to have him in some kind of medical care facility till he gets out. God forbid he's in does something dangerous and hurts himself real bad or another person. Maybe though too he can find some help that way. another thing may be to try and talk him into self appointing at a facility that can work with him in that regard. If he's getting out he might be able to continue work there and that could help him greatly. All VA does is give out pills so he needs to know there are other options there. I found help at the Vet Center in Norfolk Va. They have them in virtually every state. Great place to go to get back into the world...

There's not much you can do at this point, under age drinking is reason enough for a Chapter 13 providing you have Counseling Statements to support it with AR-15's showing a pattern of misconduct. chapters are hard but impossible. A Solder needs to understand that under a Cjpt. 13 the Army is responsible to pay for travel home. Check with JAG for a better idea of what exactly to do, every Command is different.

SPC Baker are you serving as this troops first line supervisor? If so documenting everything is key, "EVERYTHING" you would need to get your NCO chain involved all the way up to the Detachment/1SG. In addition you would have to get a copy of the Soldiers Profile and follow it to a "T" and sometimes going beyond those protections to make sure the troop doesn't get further injured. His profile will limit him to what he can do and a creative leader can fill that fairly easy. To protect yourself as well you need an "OVERWATCH" from the chain of command so you don't do anything accidentally to impact your career. As any NCO will tell you if it isn't documented it didn't happen. Missing formations, failure to contact your COC are big things and worthy of documentation. After all you need to know where he is at since he suffers from health issues and your concern as a leader is paramount :)

While there is this - I'd get creative and have fun. Just remember the training, instruction, or correction given to a Soldier to correct deficiencies must be directly related to the deficiency. Seems the SM has an issue with time - staring at a clock for 12 hours - seated for 40 and then standing for 20. While standing have them recite something at attention. Explain when seated its their time while standing its Army's time
Rinse and repeat.

Just because he is getting an MEB does not make him exempt from a dishonorable discharge. He can also sit in the orderly room and do paperwork or run errands. You can’t let Soldiers dictate what they are going to do.

After 37 years as a Senior Medic and I also have a masters degree in psychology.
I never liked the phrase Dead man's profile. However, it sounds like a severely limiting medical profile if it was brought on by Heat stroke. If he is being med boarded I must caution you of any legal ramifications that could be perceived as harassment. Not saying you are harassing the guy, the mere perception of harassment is all that is needed. if these incidents occurred after his heat stroke I caution you to tread lightly.
Here is why:
A person with a mental Illness is at risk for heat stroke. The heat stroke can exacerbate a mental illness even if it is minor. Heat Stoke can cause also cause memory loss either temporary or Permanente . Heat stroke can also cause aggressive behavior after the patient recovers this can be temporary. When I say temporary I mean like six months.
Heat Stroke affects Cognitive thought This is probably why he was late for accountability. the next question is was the underage drinking incident before or after the heat stroke?

Who is at risk of heat-related illness?

Those at greatest risk of heat-related illness include:
infants and children up to four years of age,
people 65 years of age or older,
people who are overweight,
people who overexert during outdoor work or exercise,
people with mental illness, and
people who are chronically ill or on certain medications.
I have treated Severe Cases of heat stoke at Fort Benning where the patient was near death and in a Coma. Heat Stroke affects the Brain on so many levels. Weather or not the damage is temporary or Permanente will take a licensed physician to determine. Heat Stroke is Serious If a patient goes into cardiac arrest and has to be shocked back or if he has gone with out oxygen for a specific period of time then this will definately affect brain function.

With that bad of a heatstroke why is he still active duty at your unit?
A 132 degree core temperature would be extreme as the previous
highest core temp was 115 degrees and he died a vegetable.

He’s called me a few times in the middle of the night looking for a friendly voice. Last time we spoke he remembered his time on profile as him doing my job and him being in charge of the misfits and the training room. He was on his second job doing security. He wants to go to school for nursing but that along with his mood and train of thought change constantly.
Can’t keep track of the kid. He gets depressed and deletes all of his social media for months, then comes back reinvented. Kind of like what Madonna does to her image. Last time I saw him, he dyed his hair and beard black and this grunge type 5FDP group.

How about stop being out to get him, look at his health, meds, and lack of abilities and start physically checking up on him. The last thing he needs with a 'fried brain' is an asshole fucking with him.
I'm damn glad when I had a closed head traumatic brain injury that left me with amnesia, memory loss, short term issues, and speech issues people like you were not in charge of me. It took months and years of recovery work but I was deployable and able to do my job after 2 years, but still had issues I was dealing with. My soldiers? If they had issues(had one) I checked up at the home.
Stop being a dick, and start acting like a wannabe NCO who wants to take the stripes of a good leader.

Sounds like the guy is on his way out. Minimize any negative impact his presence has on the rest of your group, and put your energy into someone who will benefit from it.

Thanks for being there for him when he reaches out to you. Keep it up if he reconnects with you. Try to get a family members information so if you want to find out how he is doing and he has cut ties you can check through them.

Brain Damage, TBI has tons of associated issues. FYI for those of you who do not get it:
Behavior is directly associated with the medical problem
Meds exacerbate this, and make behavior either slightly better, or in cases worse
Anxiety, depression, delusion, hallucinations(aural and visual) are common
Inappropriate comments, thoughts and actions

All of the above is DIRECTLY related to, and directly associated due to the injury. If you are in charge of someone like this post issue, ie, they have had teh injury and are undergoing med board, the level of responsibility they have is little to none. It takes years to recover to a place where personal liability is actually innately understood. My studies and degree studies have been abnormal personality disorders which are inclusive with TBI and PTSD. I have been assisting veterans, GI's, and disabled vets with finding the right people to talk to and go through the issues with that they have with their problems.
