What uniform do you wish they'd bring back?

Military uniforms come and go - more often than not recently. What uniform do you wish they'd bring back? For me - it is 100% the Johnny Cashes.

That uniform looks WAY better than the peanut butters we were today. Black and tans are not as sharp as full black. Leave full Khaki's to E7 and above. Let the E6 and below wear the slimming Johnny Cashes!

No idea why we did away with it!

I've always liked the Bell-bottom Dungarees and Chambray Shirts. I thought they were the most comfortable uniform.

This uniform came to be while I was in. I believe it started in 1976, except we have the same cover as we wore with Blues, which was like the officers cover. You only had to wear ribbons when you went off base. I liked this one way better than our dress blues then and white, we all know are a royal pain to keep clean. Still NOTHING has or ever will beat the Cracker-Jacks. Thats Navy all the way.

The Air Force used to have a dark blue shirt for the service uniform. It was phased out about a year after I came in. With the silver stripes and ribbons, it was pretty sharp.

I always thought the leggings on the cammie uniform looked pretty cool. It was actually an idea to bring them back in the early 2000"s when the Marines were testing new cammie patterns. I voted for them.

Funny story about that, I was standing there in my uniform talking to one of the Army pilots who was wearing his flight suit. One of the guests came up to us and asked ME if it was OK to climb onto the helo. I guess I looked official. :)

I loved my occupation field we never wore those. We would do Sea-bag inspections and hanger inspections. I can count how many times I wore Dress whites and then two times for chokers. I wore mostly BDU''s we called CUU's and chocolate chips one of 21 Seabees attached to special Marine Task Force Troy in Desert Storm. Then DCU's, ACU's and Multi Cam and NWU III and II, just owned four sets of Blue NWU I but never had to wear them. Note the rest of the 3000 Bees in Shield and Storm had the old greens believe it or not and at night it looked close to the Iraqi Uniform and we had a road crew who got drawled down on by the Egyptians, while they were cutting the Left Hook MSR fort the invasion. The CSST and CSSD guys with NAVSPECWAR at the time now NSW had chocoholic Chips. Only the Battalion Bees and fleet hospital Bees had the greens.They did end up getting the desert Flack covers and helmet covers for the guys doing the left hook MSR and the guys on the berm helping the Marines with the breach and then they decided they needed heavy Det to go in with Marines so they did same with Flack covers and helmet covers. The 21 of us had to have the full uniform because we crossed the breach with the task force and went to Kuwait city.

I think that Naval officers and enlisted personnel should wear the uniforms of the 1940's. The flat hat and the bell bottom trousers with the 13 buttons on the front were the best looking uniform for the enlisted men. The 13 buttons represented the 13 original colonies of America defended so efficiently by the Continental Navy.. The traditional uniform remained until about 1975 when they changed to mimic suits.

When I was a Dental Officer in the sixties, I wore shell cordovans instead of the regulation shoes. One time our dental unit was undergoing uniform inspection and the Captain who was inspecting us asked me how I got that fantastic shine on my shoes. I responded "Sir You can thank Mr Florsheim for that shine." He winked at me and continued on down the line with his inspection.

Cracker Jacks and Sea Farers, that's what Sailors wear.
Cracker Jack whites, and blues, are all that are really needed.

Dump all the other crap, and cut the number of uniforms Sailors have to have.

That or tie a barge behind every ship in the Navy to put clothes lockers on.

Well "back in the old Corps" the old salts still had, and wore, the herringbone twill utility uniform. All the youngbloods envied them. Those utilities wore like iron, and somehow still made you look like you were wearing a suit when you were in your dungarees.
Someplace, I've got a herringbone twill utility cover. I used to wear it on the range, and when I find it, I am going to wear it there again.

Those full black Navy uniforms are badass. The Marines dress blues are badass. I'm stuck in the ASU which I never get to wear. I'd like the all khaki Army uniform to make a come back. Soldiers looked sharp during WW2.

Army short sleeve khakis of the 1960s. They were comfortable and the material lasted nearly forever. My last issue khaki shirt finally wore out about two years ago. Great for working in the garage and yard. Oh, and let's bring back the Eisenhower jacket. Even if you don't like the look, it was comfortable and the lack of coat tails meant it didn't get wrinkled every time you sat down. (We had them during my first two years of ROTC.)

Um, the only thing that I had to not like the Johnny Cashes was that it kind of looked like the black uniforms worn by the SS, from WW2. I do agree with the khakis for the E7s and above, although the first time I saw a Chief, with the collar stuff, I saluted him. Boy, was I rode hard for that by my fellow Marines for awhile, after doing that. I did think, 'what is this that bulky rank insignia, anyway', though!

Always thought this uniform combination looked good, these are Cadets at Bordentown Military Institute in Bordentown, NJ which had a program of US Army, ROTC for its entire Cadet Corps. I had been a Cadet at that Academy at one point and wore that uniform.

My wife loves "Anne of Green Gables". Our vow renewal a few years ago was therefore in 1890s Navy Service Dress Blue, found one on e-bay that's authentic to that time period. When I put the pictures on my computer desktop during a Doctoral class that I took with a bunch of Army Chaplains, they asked if we in the Navy still wore those, and that they wished they did too.

Agreed. Working blues should be brought back. The PB&J uniforms look very bad. I think on board ship, we should use the blue coveralls that we had a couple years ago, and get rid of those blue camo uniforms (again, a very bad idea). When I was in, I wore coveralls aboard ship, and dungarees when i was off ship, but on base...

Pardon my former Marine bias, but I never liked the full-khaki on anybody. If Marines can go khaki-green, then I think Navy should have a khaki-black version. Maybe I just like the idea of having shirts not match pants. Although I dont really mond the all-white or all-black Navy stuff. But your Cheifs in full khaki look like overqualified Best-Buy TV-Salesmen.

Personally for the Navy, I love the dungaree uniform. Army, I am a huge fan of the jungle uniform. Perhaps the army could make a repurposed jungle combat uniform when we need it.

Cracker jacks for E6 and below every part of the uniform had a utility and a tradition.

Things went to hell for the Navy in 1973 when they abandoned wool and cotton. Everything since has left tradition in the trashcan.

I always admired the Officer and SNCO Tropical Worsted blouse (like the Greens blouse). Never got to wear but thought it was cool.

The white evening dress for the SNCOs. I would love to see a white viarant for the Dress blues for the SNCOs as well. Never happen but it was a sharp looking uniform.

With out doubt the Army Khaki Uniform Their was a version with long sleeves and tie and Jacket as well. For the Summer Months nothing like it. I miss it Looked good with Jump Boots and the Special Forces, Rangers and Airborne Definately stood out.

I’d like to see the AF go back to a service dress coat with 4 buttons vice the 3-button coat. Looks much more military. Also the wool or wool blend double-breasted winter overcoat.

I agree, Johnny Cashs’ and the summer Milkman Unis with Dixie cup cover. I don’t like the garrison cap. Leave the khakis for E7 and above. I also like the dungarees while at sea/work uniform. The dungarees were for a reason. The pants and blouse were floatation devices, along with being fire retardant.

I think we should go even further back. Look at the enlisted uniforms from the Second World War. They were much more rugged for shipboard, and the Dress uniforms were much sharper in appearance. As to the Undress blues they also were distinctive and unique to the Navy.

I agree totally, the USCG still uses their winter service uniform, and it looks great.
