SPC William Weedman 5000037 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Recently I was talking with my wife (she’s Dutch) about the US having a lot of troops in Germany during the Cold War. She told as a teen a US soldier lived in her neighborhood and befriended her like a little sister. Her strongest memory was his Ford Mustang and going for car rides with him. My curiosity is piqued as I can’t find any information other than the current unit in the south of the Netherlands. Any old veterans remember any of this? She said he rarely talked about his work, other than seeing him in his uniform,so she wondered if it was classified. What units were assigned or detached to the Netherlands? 2019-09-07T05:39:54-04:00 SPC William Weedman 5000037 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Recently I was talking with my wife (she’s Dutch) about the US having a lot of troops in Germany during the Cold War. (III Corps (Main) HQ was at Fort Hood.) From 1990 to 1993 I commanded the 5th Aviation Detachment which was attached to III Corps (Fwd). There were US service members stationed at Brunssum, AFCENT, NATO HQ, and there were US service members scattered here and there. There was a US support center at Schinnin which had all the support facilities like commissary, PX, check control officer, PBO, WMR, etc. My church congregation was 50% US service members and 50% local Dutch. In other words, yes, there were US service members all over The Netherlands.
