It used to be Armistice Day which was in remembrance of those who served in WWI. Now it serves to honor all veterans of the US Armed Forces.<br />In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"<br />The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:<br />Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and<br />Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and<br />Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.<br />Source <a target="_blank" href="http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp">http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp</a> <div class="pta-link-card answers-template-image type-default"> <div class="pta-link-card-picture"> <img src="https://d26horl2n8pviu.cloudfront.net/link_data_pictures/images/000/025/977/qrc/social-email.png?1445270940"> </div> <div class="pta-link-card-content"> <p class="pta-link-card-title"> <a target="blank" href="http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp">History of Veterans Day - Office of Public Affairs</a> </p> <p class="pta-link-card-description">The history of Veterans Day</p> </div> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> Response by LTC Stephen F. made Oct 19 at 2015 11:50 AM 2015-10-19T11:50:43-04:00 2015-10-19T11:50:43-04:00 1stSgt Private RallyPoint Member 1050501 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>It is when I celebrate those that served with me. Memorial Day is a very personal time for me to reflect and remember that this country was bought and paid for by the brave men and women who, so unselfishly, gave their lives for our freedoms.<br /><br />To me, Veteran's Day is a time to celebrate all the men and women who have been bold enough to stand up for America and wrote a blank check, payable up to certain death, to the citizens of the United States of America. They have served, and continue to serve, in some fashion, to give honor to all those who are now serving and to continue the remembrance of all our fallen during Memorial Day. It's a time to increase awareness of returning soldiers who have suffered lost limbs, lost eyesight or hearing, those who have suffered a TBI or from PTSD or even worse, homelessness. It's a time for all veterans to support each other and show each other gratitude for their service, as many civilians will not. It's a time for veterans to start educating the civilian sector about what this country's freedoms mean to them and inform them how it is, That they still have the freedoms they so carelessly enjoy, without a second thought.<br /><br />To ALL my brothers and sisters on RallyPoint, as this Veteran's Day approaches, I thank you all for your selflessness and devotion to the greatest country in the world.
