What was the hardest part about your final move / PCS?

For me it was several years after I had gotten out and realized that I can finally throw all the boxes I saved over the years for all my electronics and fragile items. I knew once I threw them out there was no going back and I was finally home and done moving.

My final PCS was to the storied ,some would say infamous Ft.Polk La.back in 1967 ,but from where I was coming from ,the Central Highlands of Vietnam it was the easiest and it became my “Happy Place,”Welcome Home Brothers .

After 22 Years Of Being Away From Our Hometown , Do To My Service In The Marines , Military Sealift Command And Army.
And Having NO Desire To Go Back To Baltimore City , We Realized We Were Technically Homeless And Had To Find Someplace To Live.
It Took About A Year But We Finally Settled In Pennsylvania

2 things; first was not having permission from anyone to go somewhere on a trip (felt weird, no Pass or Leave Form) and the second, finding something that I loved to do to fill that void after serving my country for 25 years (I now teach in the schools, so still serving, just on a smaller scale).

My last PCS was coming off of Embassy Duty and going to MCAS Miramar. If you think a pack out with Stateside movers is difficult it's an even more of a challenge doing one working for the State Department. You never know what will happen. I was coming from the Embassy in Guatemala and for whatever reason the company doing the pack out only uses large boxes which are about 4 1/2 feet by 4 1/2 feet large squares. Luckily I was able to have them delivered in front of my garage and I just slid them into there so I could disassemble these massive things so I could break down the contents and move them where they needed to be. My final move was fairly easy. I was medically retired and we decided to buy a home in the same area and it was just moving our stuff from the rental to the house we bought. The only snag was that two teams of movers came from the Camp Pendleton TMO and neither would do any work until they sorted out who was assigned the gig. It was this weird stand off in my driveway for like 90 minutes. But after that it was quick and easy.

Getting rid of crap I accumulated over the years. The only way to do that was doing all the packing.
