I went to Germany as a 24K, fresh out of 43 weeks of AIT. But out of 1,000 troops at the 21st Replacement Depot I was pulled by a civilian who had my 201 file and he offered me a job as a Forensic Chemist at the Crime Lab HQ for EU & Asia. Civilian clothes and my own gas chromatograph! We bought a new Doge van from Chrysler Military Sales, we had 2 hometown friends in Hanau and Wurzburg and they would show up at the Bahnhof Friday nights. Over the weekend we traveled to every country possible. This was 74-76 and the Berlin Wall was still up.
I don't have a least favorite, even the year in Korea was fun, I had my wife and 4 year old son there even though it was an unaccompanied tour. She had a passport and visa so 6 days after I arrived I picked them up in an M880 at Kimpo Airport in Seoul. I had 4 mud huts built together, along with the thatched roof and wallpaper. No bathroom of course, only a chamber pot out in the entrance way. Ajimah lived across the way, rent was a can of coffee a month. No electricity in the entire ville so lanterns and a 30 gallon steel drum that dripped diesel fuel into the hammered down bottom and it would get red hot.I helped 5 other guys get their wives over there so we had a nice American village in the ville. I wired borrowed military intercoms between all 6 compounds, climbed over the entire ville via roof tops. It helped the lady at the Rec Center, readership at the library went up by 10x and increased her budget. The NCO Club had great American Food, we had a pool and intense Spades tournaments twice a week at the Rec Center. We had a small BX on Camp Howard (k-6) but went fairly regularly to the BIG PX in Seoul, about 70 miles away and got the correct stamps for the ladies to ride in the back. They weren't allowed in the PX although the married NCO's could take their Yobo in as long as they had their current week VD card stamped by the medic in the ville. That made for some pretty pissed off wives but they enjoyed the trip home, going through bags of real groceries. A Deuce & 1/2 is not comfortable in front or back so they took pillows and blankets along.I never went to any of the 4 batteries, I stayed in my van repairing and tuning Tracker 1 & 2 modules for the HIPIR radar for the HAWK system. Been fighting the VA 4 years now for service connected pancreatic cancer caused by ionizing radiation leaking out of the HIPIR. I became diabetic the day of my Whipple Procedure and ended up with 100% neuropathy in both hands and feet. First denial, VA asked the Navy if i had been exposed, 2cd denial they asked the AIR FORCE. I was ARMY 6 years and the VA knew it. They had a copy of my DD214 with each claim and with my appeal, they never stated a reason.
Now get this, my SO, on Wednesday of this past week emailed me that he was removing himself from my case. He said I had threatened him in an email (Nope, never happened, I know you catch more flies with honey than vinegar) I asked him to send me a copy of any email where I threatened him, no response) The VA is crooked. Their job is to deny, deny, deny until you give up or die. I could die at any time with the pancreatic cancer. 7 surgeries already. Among the contenders would be:
- Tank Commander with C Co., 1-72 Armor, under the finest tank battalion commander I ever encountered. Particularly August 1976 when we were on the verge of starting WWIII.
- NCOIC, Helmstedt Support Detachment. A very strange assignment for a 19E40C5, especially when the table of organization called it a 71L30 slot and the MACOM insisted on assigning a combat arms E7 geographic bachelor.

Least favorite: hands down easy choice: Platoon Leader, 4th Platoon, Co F, 40th Armor. I happily escaped from that assignment just short of the 90 days needed for an evaluation report; returned to the unit a few months later, under a different commander and in my proper TO&E slot as Operations Sergeant / Master Gunner.
