Does anyone grow a small garden for health today? Here's an idea from Chappy. Grow a Victory Garden and find a WWII, Korean War or Vietnam War Vet who is in need and share a portion of your garden vegetables with him or her. Time to help raise morale among Veterans, while at the same time giving yourself a healthy and relaxing hobby. Plus, what's healthier than fresh, organic vegetables grown by the hands of you and your loved ones? How about it? Bring back the Victory Garden? I've worked gardens back home with my Grandpa for many years. Now that I live on post I don't necessarily have access to a personal garden, although private plots in the community garden can be acquired--the distance from here to there isn't easily negotiable.

I do like this idea and enjoy working the ground and eating the produce. Excellent idea Chappy! In the summer I have 2 more Vets that get a portion from the garden. I trade some of what I grow with the neighbors for what they grow. And the extra seedlings out to Pine Ridge to help feed the families there. My grandfather was a WWII Vet and he passed in 2005. He was the one the passed on a lot of what I know about gardening and living off the land. He also taught me about community relations and that sharing/trading makes a stronger community. I'll grow what I can, but first will buy packaged dried herbs & use them. Then, with an herb garden for culinary & medical applications, I'll be able to save seeds & share them.
I'd love to add a small food area; I've been thinking of trying to plant vertically up the porch wall. PVC Pipe is often used. Then add a fertilizer to the water. A small pump would be nice to circulate & re-use the water, adding water evaporated out.
W arthritis, I cannot get down on the ground & we generally have a short growing season, altho this Winter, it's been unseasonably warm during the day & freezing or below, at night. Therefore, it's possible that we'll be able to plant early.
