I remember you mentioning at a Nimitz lecture series that 'unmanned weapons' have always been around and we have been extending our reach to the battlefield for centuries. I enjoyed your analogy of using a bow and arrow as the early ways fighters extended their fighting distances. Having seen the growing role of UAVs since you left command, do you have any concerns or worries about their role in today's military or civilian applications? I met you when you toured the AF Theater Hospital in Balad, Iraq in 2008. The F-35 and A-10 issue is very important to me as a medical personnel, as I've seen lives saved because of the A-10's ability to provide CAS... a capability that no other aircraft can match. First, I would like to say that the fight to retire the A-10 has been one of the ugliest I can ever remember: even uglier than the F-111/F-14 fight that cost Adm. Connelly his career. There has been misinformation and half truths fed to congress (I'm referring to the debunked report that tried to show that the A-10 had a poor civilian casualty rate )... my first question is this: if, in fact, senior AF personnel did lie to congress by excluding known friendly fire incidents with the B-52 and cherry picking dates of their study to omit other incidents by other aircraft in order to make the A-10 look worse than it is, will those leaders involved in this study be held accountable for their breech of integrity? My second question is this: with the vulnerability of stealth aircraft to low band radar, does investing so much capital into an aircraft that may not have much useful service life seem to be the best use of our resources? Thank you so much for your time... Air Power! I also found many obstacles and road blocks in the retirement and reintegration process that I believe could be avoided with better education and access to a proper post-military planning. Many combat veterans suffering from related complications seek self medicated means to press through; only to fall into worse recourse in the civilian realm. This solidifies the barriers between military and civilian culture, damages family structures, and has even criminalizes veteran behavior. Veterans will never loose the core values that were issued to them during their service. Yet they often feel lost without the uniform and their team, when they move on. Is there a way to pave a smoother path for those departing the military, that incorporates "team" and promotes a healthier transition? I also believe it is great to see the AF changing their PT standards to more emulate a fit military force. IMHO the AF is in great need of a little culture change to become more like a military unit then a business. There are concepts that the Army and Marine Corps use that may seem unnecessary to many in the AF but they do accomplish cohesion within the unit. Military members, and their jobs, are being compared to civilians and since civilians don't get their retirement after 20 years of service the military system is being labeled as excessive. Military members are retiring after 20-30 years of service and are still working age but are also collecting their retirement checks. Why is it ok to compare civilians to military? This is like comparing apples to oranges. This country asked those military members to perform a specific mission / job with the promise of retirement after 20-30 years of service. Why is it ok to buy multi-billion dollar weapons system but not pay for the sacrifice that military service demands. The system isn't broken, its the perception of the system and its cost that needs to be fixed. The Air Force is an air arm of it's own.
The Navy has it's own air arm.
The Marines have their own air arm.
The Army is not allowed it's own air arm-- what would be so wrong with letting the Army revive it's own "Army Air Corps" and allowing us to have fixed-wing assets?

It would not be a challenge to Air Force air power supremacy if the Army were allowed to have its own fighters and close-air support aircraft. We could take the A-10, and other non-supersonic, close-air-support/short range aircraft to suit our needs, and the Air Force can concentrate on what they do best: supersonic, high-altitude fighters, strategic bombers, and other "fast movers". There are some great fixed-wing assets out there that the Army could really use, everything from C-130 gunships to A-10s to even Super Tucanos for counter-insurgency ops. None of these would detract from the Air Force mission and would in fact allow the USAF to specialize.

I admit we've got some pretty awesome helicopters... but payload and loiter time-on-target could be vastly improved with some airplanes flying close to the treetops.

Thanks for your consideration in this, sir.
