People like that are highly convoluted. They show their distain for a nation who's very constitution protects their right to make jackholes of themselves. If anyone gets offended and takes the bait and punches their lights out, the first thing they do is fall back on their individual rights granted by the constitution. It is often a former service member who gets emotionally overwhelmed at the offense and then catches hell for intervening. For many of us, the American flag is a living entity and symbolizes every loved one that we lost defending our nation. But we are a nation of civilians who go through life clueless as to what the real world is like, and what sacrifices are made to keep the wolves at bay. Now gimme my free stuff for being an American while I light this red, white, and blue rag on fire just because I can. God Bless America.

I would allow them to express their 1A rights. After they were finished I would retrieve the flag and dispose of it properly and respectfully.

Just because we disagree with what they are doing doesn't give us the right to stop them. We should be supporting all freedoms and rights held in the Constitution, regardless if we agree or not.

It is Freedom of Speech as expressed through freedom of expression.

some will see it as related - at burning man '99, i saw about 2 dozen flags being displayed upside down, and i asked almost all of those camps "why?" all of them gave a perfectly reasonable reason: difference btwn rich and poor, foreign policy, treatment of native americans, everything under the sun, and i was happy to see all these expressions of free speech - i described later to an old friend who objected because he saw THAT patriotic movie, well whatever - and later i thought he's a military brat with no time in service and i had 19 yrs in (at the time) and was overjoyed to see the expressions of free speech

As being a service member makes me an agent of the State, it would be an act of government silencing free speech for me to stop them, as much as I dislike it. It would also be a violation of my oath to the Constitution for me to stop them, as I swore to actively defend their free speech, as much as I dislike it. I'd dispose of the flag once they were done, if there's any flag left. We give up certain rights upon joining the military, or at least partially, and I think this situation illustrates that. I would rather maintain my honor than succumb to my emotions.

What many people fail to understand are the other laws that are being broken while defacing the American flag. For example, may cities have a burn ban. I would do something legal and refrain from theft, battery, and incitement.

We (Veterans) have a reputation to uphold, and that means not assaulting civilians for protected acts of expression. Also, 18 U.S.C. 700 is unconstitutional, and does not prescribe methods for proper disposal of the flag.

The goal should be for the desecrators to feel ashamed, which they are unlikely to do if harassed or provoked. Silent professionalism would go a long way in these scenarios. The woman in the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqf03PIFEBo) did what many of us feel is right, but she was properly arrested. What impression do you think she left on the flag desecrators? Did she shame them, or embolden them? I guess her MOS didn't involved Effects-Based Targeting.

While I love and respect the flag, I am sworn above all else to uphold the constitution, and it I love even more than the flag. As such, I would express disappointment, maybe engage in a conversation about why they were desecrating the flag, and walk away shaking my head. Come on now folks, the American flag is NOT "sacred" and thus cannot be "desecrated".

The American flag IS the symbol of what America is supposed to stand for and should be treated with respect at all times. Treating the American flag with disrespect shows contempt for what America is supposed to stand for.

That being said, some people are just jerks and clumsy people like me just might accidentally stumble into them while trying to retrieve the flag so that it could be disposed of in a respectful manner. Hey, accidents happen.

I would also have to have a conversation with them. Protesting is their legal right, but I also have the right to disagree with them. Ignorance plays a role in how some people protest with flag. I would cry. I saw that female Air Force vet that took the flag from the protesters at the college she was teaching at. She was arrested and ban from college grounds. Had I not seen that video, I may have done the same thing. That's subject to the conditions I find.

In the case of the recent incident where the flag was on the ground and people were walking on it, I think I'd have, instead of trying to take it, lain down on it, shielding it with my body.

Would that have invited the crowd to kick at me? Yes. And I would have remained passive. The police would then have had no choice but to have arrested those assaulting me. I would have taken nothing, only defended it.

Consistent, I think, with my views on dueling, if it were up to me, I'd remove all need for flag desecration laws or an amendment, by removing from civil law all causes of action for suit against anyone who acted to defend a flag being mistreated. The defender might still be criminally charged if they, say committed an assault in the process, but they could bot be sued for damages by the party assaulted.

So then everyone has the right to mistreat the flag and everyone has the right to defend it. And all are subject to punishment for criminal acts either way. So if a defender decides it's worth a few days in the county lock up... And if the protester thinks its worth the chance of loosing teeth...

VERY difficult question. Unfortunately - referencing the MSN article today about the former soldier who tried to "steal" a flag that was being disrespected - there's not much you can do other than state your opinion and walk away. 1A gives people the right to "freely express" themselves by desecrating our flag. And, it would be difficult for me NOT to punish them in some physical way. Next time they consider a "flag desecration" ceremony I hope they would think about what happened to them the first time. The flag is sacred. Through all of its' iterations up to today's design it has been sacred.

The flag stands for more things than I can list here.

Mainly, it stands for all of the people that have defended this country and many hundreds of thousands died doing just that.

It is THE symbol of our Republic and is recognized globally. It is to be respected AND protected.

The miscreants that actually stand on the flag should be tried, allowed to defend their actions and then at a minimum, sentenced to Friday and Saturday night in jail. That should be an excellent object lesson.

My preference would be to beat the hell out of them but that would be a violation of their constitutional rights and I would be breaking assault and battery laws.

This is a serious issue and should be treated as such. If you see this kind of behavior taking place, it is your duty to rescue the flag and dispose of it properly.

I would ask them to stop, and if they didn't, I would ask them if I could pay them to take the flag into my possession, at which point I would dispose of it properly. If I still didn't get through with these methods, part of me would want to just take it from them, as long as doing so did not involve a physical altercation. Not sure what I would do, actually. Sad to say, but unless it was someone I knew very well, I'd do nothing because the Supreme Court has proven time and time again to back someone doing that as "freedom of speech". Now I don't think I could drive 75 and complain to prevent me was depriving me of my right to ride free and wild...

So some laws you can break, but some you can't.... sort of like if I didn't pay my taxes, I'd be in jail, while the former Attorney General and other famous folks can get away with not paying taxes.

I voted for retrieve the flag and dispose of it properly but I suppose it would also depend on the actual situation. A group of dimwits like the ones protesting at Valdosta University I would have stepped in to take the flag and dispose of it in the proper manner. What it represents when it is whole is one thing, but once desecrated, to me it's a piece of cloth. It's what the flag represents, not the flag itself.

There are multiple desecrations that I see on a daily basis. Flag shorts, skirt, headgear, scarf. The list is endless but people only get upset when they see mostly a minority stomping on the flag. Where do you draw the line as desecration. We did not take an oath to defend the flag but rather the constitution.
