What would you say are the top five States for a Veteran on fixed income to retire in? What are the top five States or areas to avoid?

Mississippi doesn't tax military retirement pay and has a low cost of living. It also has mild winters if you don't like the cold. The flip side of that is that the summers can be intense. The Alabama and Florida coasts aren't too far away if you like the beach. The people are nice (or the most part). I live in central Mississippi and I'm 6 hours from Atlanta and Dallas, 3 Hours from Memphis and New Orleans, 4 hours from Gulf Shores, AL, and about 6 hours from Destin, FL.
To be honest though, I plan to retire elsewhere. I'll stay in the south but would like to be in the Mountains. Mississippi's terrain is mostly flat and uninteresting in my opinion.

On one those charts about Veterans retirement Mississippi was rated on the flip side as to stay away. I'll take your word. Probably head back to AZ eventually, but wanted to see what I hear about TX & FL ... after winter in KS I think I prefer the warmer weather, it's just Yuma AZ is blazing hot this time year

There was a discussion on this on our forums recently you may want to check it out. I've put some links there to articles I found around the web. https://community.hadit.com/forums/topic/71739-best-cities-in-the-world-to-live-for-disabled-veterans-and-their-dependents/?do=findComment&comment=444623

I really like living in TN, but don't come here looking for a bunch of state sponsored DV benies. To get a car tag, you have to be 100%, there are Ed benies, and you can have a free hunting and fishing license for life. On the upside no state income taxes, but a 9.5% sales tax. Low cost of living in most of the state. industry has been bringing tech jobs with good pay in recent years. Like Chief said, depends on what your looking for.

I was in AZ for 22yrs then relocated back to my home State KS. Topeka VA works, Leavenworth has great history, and they will also send you to the KCMO VA . They're trying but I really liked the Tucson VA. Just trying to Get real experience rather than read a news report , that way I can compare what's-what? Thank you
