I would tell people in the leadership path that they need to learn the technical side. Sure they don't need to be an expert on it, but they need to understand what someone is talk about.

True sir. I've worked under a few managers who didn't know enough about I.T. to really be an effective technology leader. I've also worked under a few who knew their stuff and then some. Those leaders were always well liked and respected.

I would ask them to consider their passion. Figure out what truly interests and drives them. Each path has their own intricacies. Being good with people and different personalities, discovering individuals' motivations, and being able to hone skills would lead one to the leadership path providing they also have vision and the ability to apply efforts to achieve it. Enjoying the actual work, being somewhat introverted, and having a certain personality would lean one towards the technical side. They also need to understand they might need to step into the other role from time to time and, to be successful in the business, they will need to remain flexible to do so.

Valid points and not much I can add to that. Passion is going to be the driving factor always.

Passion and the willing to learn continuously. Our field is a continuous learning field with new technology, software, protocol, security. If your willing to teach the entry level personnel, their success will fall under you. If you withheld knowledge, your subordinate will hold knowledge from you and may refuse to move up the ladder, accept new responsibility, or leave the company.
